Acts 10
1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,2 a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.3 He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius.4 And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God.5 And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter:6 he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side.7 And when the angel that spake unto him was departed, he called two of his household-servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;8 and having rehearsed all things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.9 Now on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour:10 and he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance;11 and he beholdeth the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth:12 wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven.13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean.15 And a voice came unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.16 And this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven.17 Now while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate,18 and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there.19 And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.20 But arise, and get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them.21 And Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?22 And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned of God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee.23 So he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.24 And on the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends.25 And when it came to pass that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.26 But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and findeth many come together:28 and he said unto them, Ye yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come unto one of another nation; and yet unto me hath God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean:29 wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me.30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel,31 and saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side.33 Forthwith therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee of the Lord.34 And Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:35 but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him.36 The word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all.) --37 that saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;38 even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree.40 Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest,41 not to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.42 And he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.43 To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins.44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,47 Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Pierre appelé chez Corneille
1 Il y avait à Césarée un homme appelé Corneille, qui était capitaine dans un bataillon romain dit « bataillon italien ». 2 Cet homme était pieux et, avec toute sa famille, il participait au culte rendu à Dieu. Il accordait une aide généreuse aux pauvres du peuple juif et priait Dieu régulièrement. 3 Un après-midi, vers trois heures, il eut une vision : il vit distinctement un ange de Dieu entrer chez lui et lui dire : « Corneille ! » 4 Il regarda l’ange avec frayeur et lui dit : « Qu’y a-t-il, Seigneur ? » L’ange lui répondit : « Dieu a prêté attention à tes prières et à l’aide que tu as apportée aux pauvres, et il ne t’oublie pas. 5 Maintenant donc, envoie des hommes à Jaffa pour en faire venir un certain Simon, surnommé Pierre. 6 Il loge chez un ouvrier sur cuir nommé Simon, dont la maison est au bord de la mer. » 7 Quand l’ange qui venait de lui parler fut parti, Corneille appela deux de ses serviteurs et l’un des soldats attachés à son service, qui était un homme pieux.
8 Il leur raconta tout ce qui s’était passé, puis les envoya à Jaffa.
9 Le lendemain, tandis qu’ils étaient en route et approchaient de Jaffa, Pierre monta sur le toit en terrasse de la maison, vers midi, pour prier. 10 Il eut faim et voulut manger. Pendant qu’on lui préparait un repas, il eut une vision. 11 Il vit le ciel ouvert et quelque chose qui en descendait : une sorte de grande nappe, tenue aux quatre coins, qui s’abaissait à terre. 12 Et dedans il y avait toutes sortes d’animaux quadrupèdes et de reptiles, et toutes sortes d’oiseaux. 13 Une voix lui dit : « Debout, Pierre, tue et mange ! » 14 Mais Pierre répondit : « Oh non ! Seigneur, car je n’ai jamais rien mangé d’interdit ni d’impurt. » 15 La voix se fit de nouveau entendre et lui dit : « Ne considère pas comme impur ce que Dieu a déclaré purt. »
16 Cela arriva trois fois, et aussitôt après, l’objet fut remonté dans le ciel.
17 Pierre se demandait quel pouvait être le sens de la vision qu’il avait eue. Or, pendant ce temps, les hommes envoyés par Corneille s’étaient renseignés pour savoir où était la maison de Simon et ils se trouvaient maintenant devant l’entrée. 18 Ils appelèrent et demandèrent : « Est-ce ici que loge Simon, surnommé Pierre ? » 19 Pierre était encore en train de réfléchir au sujet de la vision quand l’Esprit lui dit : « Écoute, il y a ici trois hommest qui te cherchent. 20 Debout, descends et pars avec eux sans hésiter, car c’est moi qui les ai envoyés. » 21 Pierre descendit alors auprès de ces hommes et leur dit : « Je suis celui que vous cherchez. Pourquoi êtes-vous venus ? » 22 Ils répondirent : « Nous venons de la part du capitaine Corneille. C’est un homme droit, qui adore Dieu et que tous les Juifs estiment. Un ange de Dieu lui a recommandé de te faire venir chez lui pour écouter ce que tu as à lui dire. »
23 Pierre les fit entrer et les logea pour la nuit.
Le lendemain, il se mit en route avec eux. Quelques-uns des frères de Jaffa l’accompagnèrent. 24 Le jour suivant, il arriva à Césarée. Corneille les y attendait avec des membres de sa parenté et des amis intimes qu’il avait invités. 25 Au moment où Pierre allait entrer, Corneille vint à sa rencontre et se courba jusqu’à terre devant lui pour le saluer avec grand respect. 26 Mais Pierre le releva en lui disant : « Lève-toi, car je ne suis qu’un homme, moi aussi. » 27 Puis, tout en continuant à parler avec Corneille, il entra dans la maison où il trouva de nombreuses personnes réunies. 28 Il leur dit : « Vous savez qu’un Juif n’est pas autorisé par sa religion à fréquenter un étranger ou à entrer dans sa maison. Mais Dieu m’a montré que je ne devais considérer personne comme impur ou indigne d’être fréquenté. 29 C’est pourquoi, quand vous m’avez appelé, je suis venu sans faire d’objection. J’aimerais donc savoir pourquoi vous m’avez fait venir. » 30 Corneille répondit : « Il y a trois jours, à la même heure, à trois heures de l’après-midi, je priaist chez moi. Tout à coup, un homme aux vêtements resplendissants se trouva devant moi 31 et me dit : “Corneille, Dieu a entendu ta prière et n’oublie pas l’aide que tu as apportée aux pauvres. 32 Envoie donc des hommes à Jaffa pour en faire venir Simon, surnommé Pierre. Il loge dans la maison de Simon, un ouvrier sur cuir qui habite au bord de la mer.”
33 J’ai immédiatement envoyé des gens te chercher et tu as bien voulu venir. Maintenant, nous sommes tous ici devant Dieu pour écouter tout ce que le Seigneur t’a chargé de dire. »Le discours de Pierre chez Corneille
34 Pierre prit alors la parole et dit : « Maintenant, je comprends vraiment que Dieu n’avantage personnet : 35 tout être humain, quelle que soit sa nationalité, qui le respecte et fait ce qui est juste, lui est agréable. 36 Il a envoyé son message au peuple d’Israël, la Bonne Nouvelle de la paixt par Jésus-Christ, qui est le Seigneur de tous les hommes. 37 Vous savez ce qui est arrivé d’abord en Galilée, puis dans toute la Judée, après que Jean a prêché et baptisé. 38 Vous savez comment Dieu a répandu la puissance du Saint-Esprit sur Jésus de Nazareth. Vous savez aussi comment Jésus a parcouru le pays en faisant le bien et en guérissant tous ceux qui étaient sous le pouvoir du diable, car Dieu était avec lui. 39 Et nous, nous sommes témoins de tout ce qu’il a fait dans le pays des Juifs et à Jérusalem. On l’a fait mourir en le clouant sur la croix. 40 Mais Dieu lui a rendu la vie le troisième jour ; il lui a donné d’apparaître, 41 non à tout le peuple, mais à nous que Dieu a choisis d’avance comme témoins. Nous avons mangé et bu avec lui après que Dieu l’a relevé d’entre les mortst. 42 Il nous a commandé de prêcher au peuple et d’attester qu’il est celui que Dieu a établi pour juger les vivants et les morts.
43 Tous les prophètes ont parlé de lui, en disant que quiconque croit en lui reçoit le pardon de ses péchés par le pouvoir de son nomt. »Des non-Juifs reçoivent le Saint-Esprit
44 Pendant que Pierre parlait encore, le Saint-Esprit descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient son discours. 45 Les croyants d’origine juive qui étaient venus avec Pierre furent stupéfaits de constater que le Saint-Esprit donné par Dieu se répandait aussi sur des non-Juifs. 46 En effet, ils les entendaient parler en des langues inconnues et louer la grandeur de Dieu. Pierre dit alors : 47 « Pourrait-on empêcher ces gens d’être baptisés d’eau, maintenant qu’ils ont reçu le Saint-Esprit aussi bien que nous ? » 48 Et il ordonna de les baptiser au nom de Jésus-Christ. Ils lui demandèrent alors de rester quelques jours avec eux.
