Acts 7

1 And the high priest said, Are these things so?2 And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken: The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,3 and said unto him, Get thee out of thy land, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee.4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Haran: and from thence, when his father was dead, God removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell:5 and he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: and he promised that he would give it to him in possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.6 And God spake on this wise, that his seed should sojourn in a strange land, and that they should bring them into bondage, and treat them ill, four hundred years.7 And the nation to which they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.9 And the patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt: and God was with him,10 and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.11 Now there came a famine over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time.13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s race became manifest unto Pharaoh.14 And Joseph sent, and called to him Jacob his father, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.15 And Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died, himself and our fathers;16 and they were carried over unto Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver of the sons of Hamor in Shechem.17 But as the time of the promise drew nigh which God vouchsafed unto Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,18 till there arose another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.19 The same dealt craftily with our race, and ill-treated our fathers, that they should cast out their babes to the end they might not live.20 At which season Moses was born, and was exceeding fair; and he was nourished three months in his father’s house.21 and when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians; and he was mighty in his words and works.23 But when he was well-nigh forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, smiting the Egyptian:25 and he supposed that his brethren understood that God by his hand was giving them deliverance; but they understood not.26 And the day following he appeared unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?27 But he that did his neighbor wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?28 Wouldest thou kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.30 And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.31 And when Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord,32 I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not behold.33 And the Lord said unto him, Loose the shoes from thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.34 I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I am come down to deliver them: and now come, I will send thee into Egypt.35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? him hath God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.36 This man led them forth, having wrought wonders and signs in Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.37 This is that Moses, who said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me.38 This is he that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel that spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received living oracles to give unto us:39 to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him from them, and turned back in their hearts unto Egypt,40 saying unto Aaron, Make us gods that shall go before us: for as for this Moses, who led us forth out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.41 And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.42 But God turned, and gave them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, Did ye offer unto me slain beasts and sacrifices Forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 And ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of the god Rephan, The figures which ye made to worship them: And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he appointed who spake unto Moses, that he should make it according to the figure that he had seen.45 Which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered on the possession of the nations, that God thrust out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;46 who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.47 But Solomon built him a house.48 Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in houses made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49 The heaven is my throne, And the earth the footstool of my feet: What manner of house will ye build me? saith the Lord: Or what is the place of my rest?

50 Did not my hand make all these things?

51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye.52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them that showed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become betrayers and murderers;53 ye who received the law as it was ordained by angels, and kept it not.54 Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,56 and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.57 But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;58 and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon the Lord, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Le discours d’Étienne

1 Le grand-prêtre lui demanda : « Ce que l’on dit de toi est-il vrai ? » 2 Étienne répondit : « Frères et pères, écoutez-moi. Le Dieu glorieux apparut à notre ancêtre Abraham lorsqu’il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu’il aille habiter Haran, 3 et lui dit : “Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.” 4 Abraham quitta alors le pays des Chaldéens et alla habiter Haran. Puis, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit passer de Haran dans ce pays où vous vivez maintenant. 5 Dieu ne lui donna là aucune propriété, pas même un terrain de la largeur du pied ; mais il promit qu’il lui donnerait le pays et que ses descendants le posséderaient aussi après lui. Pourtant, à cette époque, Abraham n’avait pas d’enfant. 6 Voici ce que Dieu lui déclara : “Tes descendants vivront dans un pays étranger, où ils deviendront esclaves et où on les maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans. 7 Mais je jugerai la nation dont ils auront été les esclaves. Ensuite, ils s’en iront de là et me rendront un culte en ce lieu-cit.”

8 Puis Dieu conclut avec Abraham l’alliance dont la circoncision est le signe. C’est ainsi qu’Abraham circoncit son fils Isaac le huitième jour après sa naissance ; de même, Isaac circoncit Jacob, et Jacob circoncit les douze patriarchest.
9 « Les patriarches furent jaloux de Joseph et le vendirent pour être esclave en Égypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui ; 10 il le délivra de toutes ses peines. Il donna la sagesse à Joseph et le rendit agréable aux yeux du Pharaon, roi d’Égypte. Celui-ci établit Joseph comme gouverneur sur l’Égypte et sur toute la maison royale. 11 La famine survint alors partout en Égypte et dans le pays de Canaan. La détresse était grande et nos ancêtres ne trouvaient plus rien à manger. 12 Quand Jacob apprit qu’il y avait du blé en Égypte, il y envoya nos ancêtres une première fois. 13 La seconde fois qu’ils y allèrent, Joseph se fit reconnaître par ses frères et le Pharaon apprit ainsi quelle était la famille de Joseph. 14 Alors Joseph envoya chercher Jacob, son père, et toute la famille qui comprenait soixante-quinze personnes. 15 Jacob se rendit donc en Égypte où il mourut, ainsi que nos autres ancêtres.

16 On transporta leurs corps à Sichem et on les enterra dans la tombe qu’Abraham avait achetée pour une somme d’argent aux fils de Hamor, à Sichemt.
17 « Lorsque le temps approcha où Dieu devait accomplir la promesse qu’il avait faite à Abraham, notre peuple s’accrut et devint de plus en plus nombreux en Égypte. 18 Puis un nouveau roi, qui n’avait pas connu Joseph, se mit à régner sur l’Égypte. 19 Ce roi trompa notre peuple et maltraita nos ancêtres en les obligeant à abandonner leurs bébés pour qu’ils meurentt. 20 A cette époque naquit Moïse qui était un bel enfant, agréable à Dieu. Il fut nourri pendant trois mois dans la maison de son pèret. 21 Lorsqu’il fut abandonné, la fille du Pharaon le recueillit et l’éleva comme son propre filst. 22 Ainsi, Moïse fut instruit dans toutes les sciences des Égyptiens et devint un homme influent par ses paroles et ses actes. 23 Quand il eut quarante ans, Moïse décida d’aller voir ses frères de race, les Israélites. 24 Il vit un Égyptien maltraiter l’un d’eux ; il prit la défense de l’homme malmené et, pour le venger, tua l’Égyptien. 25 Il pensait que ses frères israélites comprendraient que Dieu allait leur accorder la délivrance en se servant de lui ; mais ils ne le comprirent pas. 26 Le lendemain, Moïse rencontra deux Israélites qui se battaient et il voulut rétablir la paix entre eux. “Mes amis, leur dit-il, vous êtes frères ; pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous ?” 27 Mais celui qui maltraitait son compagnon repoussa Moïse en lui disant : “Qui t’a établi comme chef et juge sur nous ? 28 Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué hier l’Égyptien ?”

29 A ces mots, Moïse s’enfuit et alla vivre dans le pays de Madian. Là-bas, il eut deux filst.
30 « Quarante ans plus tard, dans le désert proche du mont Sinaï, un ange apparut à Moïse dans les flammes d’un buisson en feu. 31 Moïse fut étonné en voyant cette apparition. Mais au moment où il s’avançait pour regarder de plus près, il entendit la voix du Seigneur qui disait : 32 “Je suis le Dieu de tes ancêtres, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob.” Tremblant de peur, Moïse n’osait plus regarder. 33 Alors le Seigneur lui dit : “Enlève tes sandales, car tu te trouves dans un endroit consacré.

34 J’ai vu comment on maltraite mon peuple en Égypte, j’ai entendu ses gémissements et je suis venu pour le délivrer. Va maintenant, je veux t’envoyer en Égyptet.”
35 « Ce même Moïse que les Israélites avaient rejeté en lui disant : “Qui t’a établi comme chef et juge ?”, Dieu l’a envoyé comme chef et libérateur, par l’intermédiaire de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson. 36 C’est Moïse qui a fait sortir les Israélites d’Égypte, en accomplissant des prodiges et des miracles dans ce pays, à la mer Rouge et au désert pendant quarante anst. 37 C’est Moïse encore qui dit aux Israélites : “Dieu vous enverra un prophète comme moi, qui sera un membre de votre peuplet.” 38 De plus, alors que le peuple d’Israël était assemblé dans le désert, c’est lui qui se tenait entre nos ancêtres et l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï ; il reçut les paroles vivantes de Dieu, pour nous les transmettret. 39 Mais nos ancêtres ne voulurent pas lui obéir ; ils le repoussèrent et désirèrent retourner en Égypte. 40 Ils dirent à Aaron : “Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous, car nous ne savons pas ce qui est arrivé à ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir d’Égypte.” 41 Ils fabriquèrent alors un veau et offrirent un sacrifice à cette idole, ils fêtèrent joyeusement ce qu’ils avaient eux-mêmes fabriquét.

42 Mais Dieu se détourna d’eux et les laissa adorer les astres du ciel, comme il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes :
“Peuple d’Israël, est-ce à moi
que vous avez offert des animaux et d’autres sacrifices
pendant quarante ans dans le désert ?

43 Non, mais vous avez porté la tente du dieu Molok
et l’image de votre dieu-étoile Réphan,
ces idoles que vous aviez faites pour les adorer.
C’est pourquoi je vous déporterai au-delà de Babylonet.”
44 « Dans le désert, nos ancêtres avaient la tente qui renfermait le document de l’alliance. Elle était faite comme Dieu l’avait ordonné à Moïse : en effet, il avait dit à Moïse de reproduire le modèle qu’il avait vu. 45 Cette tente fut transmise à nos ancêtres de la génération suivante ; ils l’emportèrent avec eux lorsque, sous la conduite de Josué, ils conquirent le pays des nations que Dieu chassa devant eux. Elle y resta jusqu’à l’époque de Davidt. 46 Celui-ci obtint la faveur de Dieu et lui demanda la permission de donner une demeure sainte pour les descendants de Jacobt. 47 Toutefois, ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit une maisont.

48 Mais le Dieu très-haut n’habite pas dans des maisons construites par les hommes. Comme le déclare le prophète :

49 “Le ciel est mon trône, dit le Seigneur,
et la terre un escabeau sous mes pieds.
Quel genre de maison pourriez-vous me bâtir ?
En quel endroit pourrais-je m’installer ?

50 N’ai-je pas fait tout cela de mes mainst ?”
51 « Vous, hommes rebelles, dont le cœur et les oreilles sont fermés aux appels de Dieu, vous résistez toujours au Saint-Esprit ! Vous êtes comme vos ancêtres ! 52 Lequel des prophètes vos ancêtres n’ont-ils pas persécuté ? Ils ont tué ceux qui ont annoncé la venue du seul juste ; et maintenant, c’est lui que vous avez trahi et tuét.

53 Vous qui avez reçu la loi de Dieu par l’intermédiaire des angest, vous n’avez pas obéi à cette loi ! »
