Acts 8
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.2 And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.3 But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.4 They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word.5 And Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and proclaimed unto them the Christ.6 And the multitudes gave heed with one accord unto the things that were spoken by Philip, when they heard, and saw the signs which he did.7 For from many of those that had unclean spirits, they came out, crying with a loud voice: and many that were palsied, and that were lame, were healed.8 And there was much joy in that city.9 But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who beforetime in the city used sorcery, and amazed the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that power of God which is called Great.11 And they gave heed to him, because that of long time he had amazed them with his sorceries.12 But when they believed Philip preaching good tidings concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.13 And Simon also himself believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs and great miracles wrought, he was amazed.14 Now when the apostles that were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:15 who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:16 for as yet it was fallen upon none of them: only they had been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.18 Now when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,19 saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.20 But Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money.21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right before God.22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.23 For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.24 And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.25 They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.26 But an angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza: the same is desert.27 And he arose and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship;28 and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.29 And the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.30 And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?31 And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.32 Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before his shearer is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: His generation who shall declare? For his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other?35 And Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached unto him Jesus.36 And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

1 Et Saul approuvait le meurtre d’Étiennet.Saul persécute l’Église
Le même jour commença une grande persécution contre l’Église de Jérusalem. Tous les croyants, excepté les apôtres, se dispersèrent dans les régions de Judée et de Samarie.
2 Des hommes pieux enterrèrent Étienne et pleurèrent abondamment sur sa mort.
3 Saul, lui, s’efforçait de détruire l’Église ; il allait de maison en maison, en arrachait les croyants, hommes et femmes, et les jetait en prisont.Philippe annonce la Bonne Nouvelle en Samarie
4 Ceux qui avaient été dispersés parcouraient le pays en annonçant la Bonne Nouvelle. 5 Philippe se rendit dans la principale ville de Samariet et se mit à annoncer le Messie à ses habitants. 6 La population tout entière était très attentive aux paroles de Philippe quand elle l’entendait et voyait les miracles qu’il accomplissait. 7 En effet, des esprits mauvais sortaient de beaucoup de malades en poussant un grand cri et de nombreux paralysés et boiteux étaient également guéris.
8 Ainsi, la joie fut grande dans cette ville.
9 Un homme appelé Simon se trouvait déjà auparavant dans cette même ville. Il pratiquait la magie et provoquait l’étonnement de la population de la Samarie. Il prétendait être quelqu’un d’important, 10 et tous, des plus jeunes aux plus âgés, lui accordaient beaucoup d’attention. On disait : « Cet homme est la puissance de Dieu, celle qu’on appelle “la grande puissance”. » 11 Ils lui accordaient donc beaucoup d’attention, car il y avait longtemps qu’il les étonnait par ses pratiques magiques. 12 Mais quand ils crurent à la Bonne Nouvelle que Philippe annonçait au sujet du Royaume de Dieu et de la personne de Jésus-Christ, ils se firent baptiser, hommes et femmes.
13 Simon lui-même crut et fut baptisé ; il restait auprès de Philippe et il était rempli d’étonnement en voyant les grands miracles et prodiges qui s’accomplissaient.
14 Les apôtres qui étaient à Jérusalem apprirent que les habitants de la Samarie avaient reçu la parole de Dieu ; ils leur envoyèrent alors Pierre et Jean. 15 Quand ceux-ci arrivèrent en Samarie, ils prièrent pour les croyants afin qu’ils reçoivent le Saint-Esprit. 16 En effet, le Saint-Esprit n’était encore descendu sur aucun d’eux ; ils avaient seulement été baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus. 17 Alors Pierre et Jean posèrent les mains sur eux et ils reçurent le Saint-Esprit. 18 Quand Simon vit que l’Esprit était donné aux croyants lorsque les apôtres posaient les mains sur eux, il offrit de l’argent à Pierre et Jean 19 en disant : « Accordez-moi aussi ce pouvoir, afin que ceux sur qui je poserai les mains reçoivent le Saint-Esprit. » 20 Mais Pierre lui répondit : « Que ton argent soit détruit avec toi, puisque tu as pensé que le don de Dieu peut s’acheter avec de l’argent ! 21 Tu n’as aucune part ni aucun droit en cette affaire, car ton cœur n’est pas honnête aux yeux de Dieu. 22 Rejette donc ta mauvaise intention et prie le Seigneur pour que, si possible, il te pardonne d’avoir eu une telle pensée. 23 Je vois, en effet, que tu es plein d’un mal amer et que tu es prisonnier du péché. » 24 Simon dit alors à Pierre et Jean : « Priez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour moi, afin qu’il ne m’arrive rien de ce que vous avez dit. »
25 Après avoir rendu témoignage en prêchant la parole du Seigneur, les deux apôtres retournèrent à Jérusalem. En chemin, ils annoncèrent la Bonne Nouvelle dans de nombreux villages de Samarie.Philippe et le fonctionnaire éthiopien
26 Un ange du Seigneur dit à Philippe : « Tu vas partir en direction du sudt, sur la route qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza. Cette route est déserte. » 27 Philippe partit aussitôt. Et, sur son chemin, un homme se présenta : c’était un eunuque éthiopien, haut fonctionnaire chargé d’administrer les trésors de Candacet, la reine d’Éthiopie ; il était venu à Jérusalem pour adorer Dieu 28 et il retournait chez lui. Assis sur son char, il lisait le livre du prophète Ésaïe. 29 Le Saint-Esprit dit à Philippe : « Va rejoindre ce char. » 30 Philippe s’en approcha en courant et entendit l’Éthiopien qui lisaitt le livre du prophète Ésaïe. Il lui demanda : « Comprends-tu ce que tu lis ? » 31 L’homme répondit : « Comment pourrais-je comprendre, si personne ne m’éclaire ? » Et il invita Philippe à monter sur le char pour s’asseoir à côté de lui.
32 Le passage de l’Écriture qu’il lisait était celui-ci :
« Il a été comme une brebis qu’on mène à l’abattoir,
comme un agneau qui reste muet devant celui qui le tond.
Il n’a pas dit un mot.
33 Il a été humilié et n’a pas obtenu justice.
Qui pourra parler de ses descendants ?
Car on a mis fin à sa vie sur terret. »
34 Le fonctionnaire demanda à Philippe : « Je t’en prie, dis-moi de qui le prophète parle-t-il ainsi ? Est-ce de lui-même ou de quelqu’un d’autre ? » 35 Philippe prit alors la parole et, en partant de ce passage de l’Écriture, il lui annonça la Bonne Nouvelle de Jésus. 36 Ils continuèrent leur chemin et arrivèrent à un endroit où il y avait de l’eau. Le fonctionnaire dit alors : « Voici de l’eau ; qu’est-ce qui empêche que je sois baptisé ? » [ 37 Philippe lui dit : « Si tu crois de tout ton cœur, tu peux être baptisé. » Et l’homme répondit : « Je crois que Jésus-Christ est le Fils de Dieut. »] 38 Puis il fit arrêter le char. Philippe descendit avec lui dans l’eau et il le baptisa. 39 Quand ils furent sortis de l’eau, l’Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe. Le fonctionnaire ne le vit plus, mais il continua son chemin tout joyeux. 40 Philippe se retrouva à Azott, puis il passa de ville en ville, en annonçant partout la Bonne Nouvelle, jusqu’au moment où il arriva à Césarée.
