Amos 5

1 Hear ye this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up.3 For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, to the house of Israel.4 For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live;5 but seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought.6 Seek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.7 Ye who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,8 seek him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);9 that bringeth sudden destruction upon the strong, so that destruction cometh upon the fortress.10 They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.11 Forasmuch therefore as ye trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink the wine thereof.12 For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins-ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate from their right.13 Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be with you, as ye say.15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.16 Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all the broad ways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! Alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful in lamentation to wailing.17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah.18 Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! Wherefore would ye have the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light.19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.20 Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.22 Yea, though ye offer me your burnt-offerings and meal-offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts.23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.24 But let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.25 Did ye bring unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?26 Yea, ye have borne the tabernacle of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God of hosts.

Un chant de deuil pour Israël

1 Gens d’Israël, écoutez ce que j’ai à dire : c’est un chant de deuil, que j’entonne à votre sujet.

2 Comme une jeune fille morte
Israël est à terre,
elle ne se relèvera plus.
La voilà abandonnée
sur son propre sol :
personne pour la relever !

3 Car voici ce que le Seigneur Dieu déclare
au sujet de la nation d’Israël :
« Sur mille hommes d’une ville
qui partent pour la guerre,
il n’en restera que cent.
Sur cent hommes d’un village,
il n’en restera que dix. »

Appel avant qu’il soit trop tard

4 Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur
à la nation d’Israël :
« Si vous voulez rester en vie,
c’est moi que vous devez consulter.

5 Mais ne me consultez pas
au temple de Béthel,
n’entrez pas non plus
au sanctuaire du Guilgal,
ne faites pas de pèlerinage
au lieu saint de Berchéba.
Car je dis du Guilgal :
“Qu’il galope vers l’exil !”
et de Béthel, la maison de Dieu,
“Qu’elle devienne un enfert !” »

6 Si vous voulez rester en vie,
c’est le Seigneur qu’il vous faut consulter.
Sinon, descendants de Josepht,
il jaillira comme un feu,
qui consumera tout à Béthel,
sans que personne puisse l’éteindre.

7 Hélas, on donne au droit un goût amer,
on jette la justice à terre !

8 Il a fait les constellations,
les Pléiades et Oriont.
Il change l’obscurité
en lumière du matin ;
il obscurcit le jour
pour faire venir la nuit.
Il convoque les eaux de la mer
et les répand sur la terre.
Son nom : le Seigneur.

9 Il fait luire sur l’homme fort
l’éclair de la destruction,
et la ruine survient
dans la ville fortifiée.

10 Au tribunal on est plein de haine
pour celui qui rappelle le droit,
et on a en horreur
le témoin qui dit la vérité.

11 « Vous exploitez le faible,
vous prélevez du blé sur sa récolte.
C’est pourquoi vous ne profiterez pas
des belles maisons que vous avez bâties,
et vous ne goûterez pas le vin
des vignes de choix que vous avez plantées.

12 Mais je n’ignore rien de tous vos crimes,
je connais la gravité de vos fautes :
vous êtes l’ennemi de l’innocent,
vous vous laissez acheter.
Au tribunal vous empêchez
qu’on fasse justice aux pauvres. »

13 Ce temps est un temps de malheur,
c’est pourquoi l’homme averti
préfère garder le silence.

14 Cherchez donc ce qui est bien
et non pas ce qui est mal.
Ainsi vous resterez en vie,
et le Seigneur, le Dieu de l’univers,
sera vraiment avec vous,
comme vous le prétendez.

15 Détestez ce qui est mal,
aimez ce qui est bien.
Au tribunal rétablissez le droit.
Alors le Seigneur, le Dieu de l’univers,
se montrera peut-être bienveillant
pour les derniers descendants de Josepht.

16 Voici donc ce que déclare le Seigneur,
le Dieu souverain de l’univers :
« Sur toutes les places publiques
on entendra des lamentations.
Dans toutes les rues les gens s’écrieront :
“Quel malheur ! Quel malheur !”
On convoquera pour le deuil
les ouvriers de la ferme,
et pour les chants mortuaires
les pleureurs professionnels.

17 Dans toutes les vignes
il y aura des lamentations
quand je passerai parmi vous »,
dit le Seigneur.

Le jour où le Seigneur interviendra

18 Quel malheur de voir ceux qui attendent
le jour où le Seigneur interviendra !
Que vous apportera-t-il,
ce jour du Seigneurt ?
Un bonheur lumineux ?
– Non, ce sera un jour noir,

19 comme pour un homme
qui fuit devant un lion
et tombe sur un ours.
Il entre à la maison,
appuie la main au mur,
et se fait mordre par un serpent !

20 – Lumineux, le jour du Seigneur ?
– Non, ce sera un jour noir,
un jour d’obscurité,
sans la moindre lumière !

Un culte détestable

21 « Je déteste vos pèlerinages,
je ne veux plus les voir,
dit le Seigneur.
Je ne peux plus sentir
vos cérémonies religieuses,

22 ni les sacrifices complets
que vous venez me présenter.
Je n’éprouve aucun plaisir
à vos offrandes de grains.
Je ne regarde même pas
les veaux gras que vous m’offrez
en sacrifice de communiont.

23 Cessez de brailler
vos cantiques à mes oreilles ;
je ne veux plus entendre
le son de vos harpes.

24 Laissez plutôt libre cours au droit.
Que la justice puisse couler
comme un torrent intarissable !
25 « Pendant les quarante ans que vous avez passés au désert, m’avez-vous présenté des sacrifices et des offrandes, gens d’Israël ?

26 Et portiez-vous alors, comme vous le faites aujourd’hui, les symboles de votre dieu-roi Sakouth et de votre dieu-étoile Kéwant, ces objets que vous vous êtes fabriqués ? Vous savez bien que non !

27 C’est pourquoi je vous déporterai
bien au-delà de Damas »,
déclare le Seigneur.
Son nom : Dieu de l’univers.
