Daniel 1

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;4 youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.5 And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they should stand before the king.6 Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.7 And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.9 Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.11 Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king’s dainties; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.14 So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king’s dainties.16 So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.18 And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Daniel et ses compagnons à Babylone

1 Pendant la troisième année du règne de Joaquim, roi de Judat, le roi de Babylone, Nabucodonosor, vint assiéger Jérusalem.

2 Le Seigneur livra Joaquim en son pouvoir, et le laissa s’emparer d’une partie des ustensiles sacrés du temple de Dieu. Nabucodonosor emmena des prisonniers en Babylonie et déposa le butin dans le temple de ses dieux, dans la salle du trésort.
3 Nabucodonosor ordonna au chef de son personnel, Achepénaz, de choisir parmi les Israélites quelques garçons de la famille royale ou de familles nobles. 4 Ces jeunes gens ne devaient présenter aucun défaut physique ; ils devaient avoir bonne apparence et être remplis de sagesse, de connaissance et de discernement, afin de pouvoir entrer au service du roi, dans son palais. On leur enseignerait la langue et l’écriture des Babylonienst.

5 Le roi prescrivit qu’on leur fournisse chaque jour la nourriture et le vin de la table royale, et qu’on les instruise durant trois ans. A la fin de cette période, ils entreraient à son service.
6 Parmi ceux de la tribu de Juda qui furent choisis se trouvaient Daniel, Hanania, Michaël et Azaria. 7 Le chef du personnel royal leur donna de nouveaux noms : Daniel reçut le nom de Beltassar, Hanania celui de Chadrac, Michaël celui de Méchak, et Azaria celui d’Abed-Négot. 8 Daniel prit la ferme résolution de ne pas se rendre impur en consommant la nourriture et le vin de la table royale. Il demanda donc au chef du personnel de ne pas l’obliger à se rendre impur par de tels aliments. 9 Dieu permit que sa requête soit accueillie avec faveur et bienveillance par le chef du personnel.

10 Toutefois celui-ci répondit à Daniel : « C’est Sa Majesté le roi lui-même qui a prescrit ce que vous devez manger et boire. J’ai peur qu’il ne vous trouve pas aussi bonne mine qu’aux autres jeunes gens de votre âge ; ainsi, à cause de vous, le roi pourrait me faire couper la tête. »
11 Alors Daniel dit à l’homme chargé par le chef du personnel de s’occuper de Hanania, de Michaël, d’Azaria et de lui-même : 12 « Je t’en prie, fais un essai avec nous pendant dix jours : qu’on nous donne seulement des légumes à manger et de l’eau à boire. 13 Ensuite tu compareras notre mine à celle des jeunes gens qui consomment la nourriture de la table royale. A ce moment-là, tu agiras envers nous d’après ce que tu auras vu. » 14 L’homme accepta cette proposition et fit un essai de dix jours avec Daniel et ses compagnons. 15 A la fin de cette période, on put constater qu’ils avaient meilleure mine et avaient pris plus de poids que les jeunes gens nourris des mets de la table royale. 16 C’est pourquoi l’homme responsable d’eux continua d’écarter la nourriture et le vin qu’on leur fournissait ; il leur donnait seulement des légumes.

17 Dieu accorda aux quatre jeunes gens du discernement et de vastes connaissances dans les domaines de la langue et de la sagesse. Daniel était capable en outre de comprendre le sens des visions et des rêves.
18 Au terme du délai fixé par le roi Nabucodonosor pour qu’on lui présente les jeunes gens choisis, le chef du personnel les lui amena. 19 Le roi s’entretint avec eux : Daniel, Hanania, Michaël et Azaria se révélèrent plus compétents que tous les autres. C’est pourquoi ils entrèrent à son service.

20 Lorsque le roi les interrogeait sur n’importe quel sujet exigeant de la sagesse et de l’intelligence, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les devins et magiciens de son royaume.
21 Daniel resta au service du roi jusqu’au moment où Cyrus devint roit.
