Daniel 3
1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.3 Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.4 Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,5 that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up;6 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.7 Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews.9 They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever.10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image;11 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king.14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands?16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter.17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king.18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was wont to be heated.20 And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.21 Then these men were bound in their hosen, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods.26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace: he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of the fire.27 And the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them.28 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.29 Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort.30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon.

L’ordre d’adorer la statue d’or
1 Le roi Nabucodonosor fit construire une statue d’or, de trente mètres de haut et de trois mètres de large, et il ordonna qu’on la dresse sur la plaine de Doura, dans la province de Babylone. 2 Ensuite il envoya des messagers convoquer les satrapes, les préfets, les gouverneurs, les conseillers, les trésoriers, les juges, les magistratst et tous les autres fonctionnaires des provinces. Ils devaient venir pour l’inauguration de la statue que le roi avait fait dresser.
3 Tous ces hauts fonctionnaires se rassemblèrent donc et prirent place devant la statue, pour la cérémonie d’inauguration.
4 Le maître de cérémonie cria d’une voix puissante : « Gens de tous peuples, de toutes nations et de toutes langues, écoutez l’ordre que voici : 5 “Dès que vous entendrez jouer de la trompette, de la flûte, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de tous les genres d’instruments de musique, vous vous inclinerez jusqu’à terre pour adorer la statue d’or que le roi Nabucodonosor a fait dresser.
6 Si quelqu’un refuse de s’incliner et de l’adorer, on le jettera immédiatement dans la fournaise où brûle un feu intense.” »
7 Ainsi donc, dès que les gens de tous peuples, nations et langues entendirent jouer de la trompette, de la flûte, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion et de tous les genres d’instruments de musique, ils s’inclinèrent jusqu’à terre et adorèrent la statue d’or que le roi Nabucodonosor avait fait dresser.Les amis de Daniel restent fidèles à Dieu
8 Aussitôt après, quelques Babyloniens vinrent accuser les Juifs. 9 Ils s’adressèrent au roi Nabucodonosor et lui dirent : « Longue vie au roi ! 10 Sa Majesté le roi lui-même a donné l’ordre suivant : “Tout homme devra s’incliner jusqu’à terre pour adorer la statue d’or, dès qu’il entendra jouer de la trompette, de la flûte, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de tous les genres d’instruments de musique. 11 Si quelqu’un refuse de s’incliner et d’adorer la statue, on le jettera dans la fournaise où brûle un feu intense.”
12 Eh bien, Majesté, les Juifs Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo, à qui tu as confié des postes dans l’administration de la province de Babylone, n’ont pas tenu compte de ton ordre : ils refusent de servir tes dieuxt et d’adorer la statue d’or que tu as fait dresser. »
13 Très en colère, Nabucodonosor ordonna qu’on lui amène Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo. Lorsqu’ils furent présents, 14 le roi leur demanda : « Est-il vrai, Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo, que vous refusez de servir mes dieux et d’adorer la statue d’or que j’ai fait dresser ? 15 Vous allez entendre de nouveau jouer de la trompette, de la flûte, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de tous les genres d’instruments de musique. Êtes-vous prêts maintenant à vous incliner jusqu’à terre pour adorer la statue que j’ai faite ? Si vous refusez, vous serez jetés immédiatement dans la fournaise où brûle un feu intense. Quel dieu pourrait alors vous arracher à mon pouvoir ? » 16 Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo répondirent au roi : « Majesté, nous ne voulons pas essayer de nous justifier. 17 Sache toutefois que notre Dieu, le Dieu que nous servons, est capable de nous sauver ; oui, il nous arrachera à la fournaise et à ton pouvoir.
18 Et à supposer qu’il ne le fasse past, sache bien que nous refuserons quand même de servir tes dieux et d’adorer la statue d’or que tu as fait dresser. »
19 Nabucodonosor devint furieux ; il pâlit de rage face à Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo. Il exigea qu’on chauffe la fournaise sept fois plus que d’habitude 20 et il ordonna à quelques vigoureux soldats de son armée de ligoter Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo pour les jeter dans la fournaise. 21 Aussitôt on ligota ces trois hommes, vêtus de leur costume d’apparat, pantalons, tuniques et bonnetst, et on les jeta dans la fournaise. 22 Conformément à l’ordre catégorique du roi, on avait surchauffé la fournaise. Ainsi, lorsque les soldats allèrent jeter Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo dans le feu, ils furent eux-mêmes tués par les flammes.
23 Quant à Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo, ils tombèrent tous les trois, ligotés, au cœur de la fournaiset.Les trois amis sauvés de la fournaise
24 Soudaint, le roi Nabucodonosor se leva stupéfait et demanda à ses ministres : « N’avons-nous pas jeté trois hommes ligotés dans le feu ? » – « C’est exact, Majesté ! » répondirent-ils. 25 « Et pourtant, reprit le roi, je vois quatre hommes, non ligotés, qui se déplacent en plein milieu du feu. Ils ne portent aucune trace de blessures. Et le quatrième ressemble tout à fait à un être divin. » 26 Nabucodonosor s’approcha de l’ouverture de la fournaise et cria : « Chadrac, Méchak et Abed-Négo, serviteurs du Dieu très-haut, sortez de là et venez ! » Aussitôt, ils sortirent tous trois du milieu du feu. 27 Les satrapes, les préfets, les gouverneurs et les ministres du roi s’attroupèrent pour les examiner : leurs corps n’avaient pas subi l’atteinte du feu, leurs cheveux n’étaient pas roussis, leurs vêtements n’étaient pas endommagés, ils ne portaient même aucune odeur de brûlé. 28 Le roi s’écria : « Merci au Dieu de Chadrac, de Méchak et d’Abed-Négo ! Il a envoyé son ange délivrer ses serviteurs qui, pleins de confiance en lui, ont désobéi à mon ordre royal. Ils ont préféré s’exposer aux tortures plutôt que de servir et d’adorer d’autres dieux que le leur. 29 C’est pourquoi je décrète ce qui suit : “Si une personne, quel que soit son peuple, sa nation ou sa langue d’origine, parle avec légèretét du Dieu de Chadrac, de Méchak et d’Abed-Négo, cette personne sera coupée en morceaux et sa maison sera transformée en un tas de décombres. En effet, aucun autre dieu n’est capable d’accomplir une telle délivrance.” »
30 Ensuite le roi confia à Chadrac, à Méchak et à Abed-Négo des postes plus importants que précédemmentt, dans la province de Babylone.Le second rêve du roi : le grand arbre
31 Le roit Nabucodonosor adressa le message suivant aux gens de tous peuples, de toutes nations et de toutes langues, habitant la terre entière :
« Je vous souhaite une paix parfaite !
32 « Il m’a paru bon de faire connaître les prodiges et les miracles que le Dieu très-haut a accomplis en ma faveur :
33 Ses prodiges sont si grands !
Ses miracles sont si puissants !
Ce Dieu régnera éternellement,
sa souveraineté n’aura pas de fin !
