Daniel 6
1 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;2 and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account unto them, and that the king should have no damage.3 Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.4 Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.6 Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counsellors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong interdict, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.8 Now, O king, establish the interdict, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the interdict.10 And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.11 Then these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God.12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s interdict: Hast thou not signed an interdict, that every man that shall make petition unto any god or man within thirty days, save unto thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the interdict that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored till the going down of the sun to rescue him.15 Then these men assembled together unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no interdict nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.20 And when he came near unto the den to Daniel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.23 Then was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he had trusted in his God.24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men that had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.25 Then king Darius wrote unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.26 I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, And his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even unto the end.27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

1 et Darius, le Mèdet, accéda à la royauté, à l’âge de soixante-deux ans.Les ennemis de Daniel lui tendent un piège
2 Darius décida de créer cent vingt postes de satrapes afin de placer dans tout l’empire des hommes qui représentent son autoritét. 3 Il nomma à leur tête trois surintendants à qui les satrapes devraient rendre compte de leur administration, de telle manière que personne ne puisse nuire aux intérêts du roi. Daniel était l’un des surintendants ; 4 il surpassait les deux autres et tous les satrapes par ses capacités exceptionnelles, si bien que le roi avait l’intention de lui confier une responsabilité relative à l’empire tout entier. 5 Alors les autres surintendants et les satrapes se mirent à chercher si Daniel avait commis des erreurs au préjudice de l’empire, mais ils ne purent trouver aucune faute ni aucun manquement, car il était parfaitement honnête : il n’y avait vraiment rien à lui reprocher.
6 Ces hommes se dirent donc : « Nous n’aurons aucun motif pour accuser Daniel, à moins de trouver quelque chose en relation avec la loi de son Dieu. »
7 Sans tarder, les deux surintendants et les satrapes se rendirent chez le roi et lui dirent : « Longue vie au roi Darius ! 8 Les surintendants de l’empire, les préfets, les satrapes, les ministres et les gouverneurs ont tenu conseil et proposent au roi de promulguer et publier un décret impérial de la teneur suivante : “Durant une période de trente jours, quiconque adressera une prière à un dieu ou à un être humain autre que le roi lui-même devra être jeté dans la fosse aux lions.” 9 Que le roi promulgue donc ce décret et le signe, de telle sorte qu’il ne puisse pas être modifié, conformément à la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est irrévocable. »
10 Là-dessus, le roi Darius signa le document du décret.Daniel est jeté dans la fosse aux lions
11 Lorsque Daniel apprit qu’un tel décret avait été signé, il regagna sa maison. A l’étage supérieur, il ouvrit les fenêtres orientées vers Jérusalem. C’est là que, trois fois par jour, il se mettait à genoux pour prier et louer son Dieu. Il le fit comme d’habitude. 12 Ses adversaires arrivèrent en hâte et le trouvèrent en train de prier et d’implorer son Dieu. 13 Ils se rendirent donc chez le roi et lui dirent : « Le roi n’a-t-il pas signé un décret prévoyant que, durant une période de trente jours, quiconque adresserait une prière à un dieu ou à un être humain autre que le roi lui-même, devrait être jeté dans la fosse aux lions ? » – « C’est effectivement la décision qui a été prise, répondit le roi, conformément à la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est irrévocable. » –
14 « Eh bien, Majesté, reprirent ces hommes, Daniel, l’un des déportés du pays de Juda, n’a de respect ni pour toi ni pour le décret que tu as signé : trois fois par jour il prie son Dieu. »
15 Lorsque le roi entendit ces paroles, il en fut profondément chagriné et se mit en tête d’épargner Daniel. Jusqu’au coucher du soleil, il chercha un moyen de le sauver. 16 Mais les adversaires de Daniel ne tardèrent pas à revenir et dirent au roi : « Le roi sait bien que, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, un décret ou un règlement promulgué par lui ne peut pas être modifié. »
17 Alors, sur un ordre du roi, on amena Daniel et on le jeta dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi lui dit : « Seul ton Dieu, que tu sers avec tant de persévérance, pourra te sauvert. »
18 On apporta une pierre qu’on plaça sur l’ouverture de la fosse. Le roi y appliqua son cachet personnel, de même que le cachet de ses hauts fonctionnaires, afin que personne ne puisse modifier la situation de Daniel.
19 Le roi regagna ensuite son palais pour la nuit. Il refusa toute nourriture et, bien qu’il n’arrivât pas à dormir, il refusa aussi tout divertissementt.Daniel sort sain et sauf de la fosse aux lions
20 Dès les premières lueurs de l’aube, le roi se leva et se rendit en hâte à la fosse aux lions. 21 Tandis qu’il en approchait, il appela Daniel d’une voix affligée : « Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, est-ce que ton Dieu, que tu sers avec tant de persévérance, a pu t’arracher aux griffes des lions ? » 22 Daniel lui répondit : « Longue vie au roi ! 23 Oui, mon Dieu a envoyé son ange fermer la gueule des lions, et ils ne m’ont fait aucun mal. En effet, je n’étais pas coupable envers Dieu, et je n’avais commis aucune faute non plus à l’égard du roi ! » 24 Rempli de joie, le roi donna l’ordre de remonter Daniel de la fosse. Dès qu’il en fut sorti, on constata qu’il ne portait aucune blessure, parce qu’il avait eu confiance en son Dieu.
25 Le roi ordonna ensuite d’arrêter les hommes qui avaient dénoncé Daniel, et on les jeta dans la fosse aux lions, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants. Les lions les attaquèrent et leur broyèrent les os avant même qu’ils aient atteint le fond de la fosse.
26 Ensuite le roi Darius adressa le message suivant aux gens de tous peuples, de toutes nations et de toutes langues, habitant la terre entière :
« Je vous souhaite une paix parfaite !
27 « Je décrète ce qui suit : Dans tout l’empire placé sous mon autorité, chacun doit manifester un respect absolu envers le Dieu de Daniel.
Il est le Dieu vivant,
celui qui subsistera toujours.
Son règne ne cessera jamais,
sa souveraineté durera éternellement.
28 Il délivre et il sauve,
il accomplit des prodiges et des miracles
dans le ciel et sur la terre.
C’est lui en effet qui a arraché Daniel
aux griffes des lions. »
29 Par la suite, Daniel occupa un poste important sous le règne de Darius, puis sous le règne de Cyrus, roi de Perset.
