Deuteronomy 1

1 These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.2 It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that Jehovah had given him in commandment unto them;4 after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,6 Jehovah our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mountain:7 turn you, and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the sea-shore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:10 Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.11 Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known, according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner that is with him.17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.19 And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which ye saw, by the way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the hill-country of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.21 Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall come.23 And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe:24 and they turned and went up into the hill-country, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.

26 Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah your God:27 and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.28 Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.30 Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,31 and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that Jehovah thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this place.32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,33 who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.

34 And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,36 save Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.37 Also Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither:38 Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage thou him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.39 Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.

41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and were forward to go up into the hill-country.42 And Jehovah said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.43 So I spake unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.44 And the Amorites, that dwelt in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah.45 And ye returned and wept before Jehovah; but Jehovah hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

PREMIER DISCOURS DE MOÏSE

1–4

1 Ce livre rapporte les discours que Moïse adressa à tous les Israélites, alors qu’ils étaient encore à l’est du Jourdain, dans la plaine désertique située près de Souf, entre Paran d’une part, et Tofel, Laban, Hasséroth et Di-Zahabt d’autre part. 2 – Du mont Horeb à Cadès-Barnéa, il y a onze jours de marche en suivant la route qui mène à la région montagneuse de Séirt. – 3 C’est quarante ans après la sortie d’Égypte, le premier jour du onzième mois, que Moïse transmit aux Israélites tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait ordonné de leur communiquer.

4 Cela se passait après que Moïse eut remporté une victoire d’abord sur Sihon, roi des Amorites, qui résidait à Hèchebon, puis, à Édréi, sur Og, roi du Bachan, qui résidait à Achetarotht.

5 A l’est du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença donc à enseigner la loi de Dieu. Voici ses paroles :

Dieu donne à Israël l’ordre de départ


6 Lorsque nous étions au mont Horeb, le Seigneur notre Dieu nous a parlé ainsi : « Vous êtes restés assez longtemps au pied de cette montagne. 7 Remettez-vous en route maintenant ; gagnez la région montagneuse où demeurent les Amorites, ainsi que les territoires voisins habités par les Cananéens, à savoir la plaine du Jourdain, la région des collines, le Bas-Pays, la partie méridionale et la région côtière ; continuez même jusqu’aux montagnes du Liban et jusqu’à l’Euphrate, le grand fleuvet.

8 Voyez, je vous accorde ce pays. Allez en prendre possession, car c’est le pays que moi, le Seigneur, j’ai promis de donner à vos ancêtres Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et à leurs descendants après eux. »

Moïse institue des juges


9 Alors, continua Moïse, je vous ai déclaré : « Je ne veux plus porter seult la responsabilité de vous diriger. 10 Le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a multipliés, vous êtes maintenant aussi nombreux que les étoiles dans le ciel. 11 Je souhaite que le Seigneur, le Dieu de vos ancêtres, vous rende encore mille fois plus nombreux et vous bénisse comme il l’a promis ! 12 Mais comprenez bien qu’il m’est impossible de porter seul la charge de régler vos problèmes, vos réclamations et vos disputes. 13 Choisissez donc parmi vous, dans chaque tribu, des hommes sages, compétents et de bonne réputation, et j’en ferai des responsables du peuple. » 14 Vous m’avez répondu que cette proposition était judicieuse. 15 Pour vous diriger, j’ai alors rassemblé les hommes sages et de bonne réputation qui avaient déjà des responsabilités dans vos tribus ; j’ai désigné les uns comme chefs de groupes de mille, de cent, de cinquante ou de dix hommes, et j’ai confié aux autres des tâches de surveillance dans chaque tribu. 16 Par la même occasion, j’ai donné les directives suivantes à ceux qui devaient rendre la justice parmi vous : « Examinez les causes que vos compatriotes vous soumettent, et rendez des jugements équitables dans les affaires opposant un Israélite et un de ses compatriotes ou un résident étranger. 17 Ne favorisez personne dans un jugement ; écoutez avec impartialité les gens simples et les personnages importants. Ne vous laissez impressionner par personne, car vous devez juger au nom de Dieu. Si une affaire est trop difficile pour vous, venez me la soumettre et je l’examinerai. »

18 A cette occasion-là, je vous ai indiqué tout ce que vous deviez faire.

Désobéissance d’Israël au seuil du pays promis


19 Après cela, sur l’ordre du Seigneur notre Dieu, nous avons quitté le mont Horeb et nous avons traversé l’immense et redoutable désert que vous connaissez, en suivant la route qui conduit à la région montagneuse habitée par les Amorites. Lorsque nous avons atteint Cadès-Barnéat, 20 je vous ai dit : « Vous voici arrivés près de la région montagneuse des Amorites, que le Seigneur notre Dieu nous donne.

21 Regardez, le Seigneur votre Dieu déploie ce pays devant vous. En route, allez vous en emparer, comme le Seigneur, le Dieu de vos ancêtres, vous l’a ordonné. Soyez courageux et forts ! »
22 Alors vous êtes tous venus me trouver en disant : « Envoyons des hommes en reconnaissance pour explorer le pays. Ils auront pour mission de nous faire rapport sur les chemins à suivre et sur les villes où nous arriverons. » 23 Votre proposition m’a paru judicieuse ; c’est pourquoi j’ai désigné douze hommes parmi vous, un de chaque tribu. 24 Ils ont pris la direction de la région montagneuse et ils ont gagné le vallon d’Èchekolt, qu’ils ont exploré. 25 Ils y ont cueilli des fruits du pays et nous les ont rapportés. Ils nous ont déclaré : « Le pays que le Seigneur notre Dieu va nous donner est un bon pays. » 26 Pourtant vous avez désobéi aux ordres du Seigneur votre Dieu en refusant d’y aller. 27 Vous avez protesté à l’intérieur de vos tentes en déclarant : « C’est par haine envers nous que le Seigneur nous a fait sortir d’Égypte. Il veut nous livrer au pouvoir des Amorites pour nous exterminer !

28 Pourquoi irions-nous là-bas ? Nous n’en avons pas le courage, car nos frères nous ont affirmé que les habitants de ce pays sont plus forts et plus nombreux que nous, et que les villes sont imposantes, avec des murailles qui s’élèvent jusqu’au ciel. Ils y ont même vu des descendants du géant Anact ! »
29 « Ne tremblez pas, ne les craignez pas ! vous ai-je répondu. 30 Le Seigneur votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra pour vous, comme il l’a déjà fait sous vos yeux, soit en Égypte, 31 soit dans le désert. Vous l’avez constaté : il vous a portés, comme un homme porte son enfant, tout au long du voyage qui vous a amenés en ce lieu. » 32 Mais, à ce moment-là, vous n’avez pas fait confiance au Seigneur votre Dieu.

33 Pourtant c’est lui qui vous précédait sur la route, pour vous chercher un emplacement de camp ; de nuit il était présent dans la colonne de feu qui éclairait le chemin à suivre, et de jour dans la colonne de fumée.
34 Le Seigneur a entendu vos plaintes. Dans sa colère, il a déclaré : 35 « Je jure qu’aucun des hommes de cette génération mauvaise n’entrera dans le bon pays que j’ai promis de donner à leurs ancêtres.

36 Seul Caleb, fils de Yefounné, le verra ; je lui donnerai, pour lui et ses descendants, la région qu’il a parcourue, parce qu’il a été fidèle envers moi. »
37 A cause de vous, le Seigneur s’est mis en colère contre moi également. « Toi non plus, m’a-t-il dit, tu n’entreras pas dans ce pays. 38 Par contre ton serviteur Josué, fils de Noun, y entrera. Affermis son courage, car c’est lui qui devra conduire les Israélites à la conquête du pays. » 39 Puis le Seigneur s’est adressé à vous tous : « Vous disiez que vos enfants allaient devenir le butin des vainqueurs. Eh bien, eux qui, aujourd’hui, ne savent pas encore distinguer le bien du mal, ils entreront dans le pays avec Josué. C’est à eux que je le donnerai en possession.

40 Quant à vous, faites demi-tour et repartez par le désert en direction de la mer des Roseaux. »
41 En réponse à cela, continua Moïse, vous m’avez affirmé : « Nous avons été coupables envers le Seigneur. Mais maintenant, nous voulons partir au combat, comme le Seigneur notre Dieu nous l’a ordonné. » Chacun de vous s’est équipé pour le combat, car vous pensiez qu’il était facile de vous emparer de la région montagneuset. 42 Alors le Seigneur m’a déclaré : « Ordonne-leur de ne pas partir au combat, car je ne suis pas avec eux ; qu’ils n’aillent donc pas se faire battre par leurs ennemis. » 43 Je vous ai transmis cet avertissement, mais vous n’avez pas voulu m’écouter. Vous avez désobéi aux ordres du Seigneur et, pleins d’arrogance, vous avez gagné la région montagneuse. 44 Des hauteurs où ils habitaient, les Amorites sont descendus contre vous, ils vous ont battus dans la région de Séir et, comme un essaim d’abeilles, ils vous ont poursuivis jusqu’à Hormat. 45 A votre retour, vous vous êtes lamentés devant le Seigneur, mais il n’a rien voulu entendre, il n’a pas prêté attention à vous. 46 Alors vous êtes demeurés longtemps, très longtemps, à Cadès-Barnéa.
