Deuteronomy 10
1 At that time Jehovah said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.2 And I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark.3 So I made an ark of acacia wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in my hand.4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which Jehovah spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and Jehovah gave them unto me.5 And I turned and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they are as Jehovah commanded me.6 (And the children of Israel journeyed from Beeroth Bene-jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest’s office in his stead.7 From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of brooks of water.8 At that time Jehovah set apart the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, to stand before Jehovah to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.9 Wherefore Levi hath no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; Jehovah is his inheritance, according as Jehovah thy God spake unto him.)10 And I stayed in the mount, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights: and Jehovah hearkened unto me that time also; Jehovah would not destroy thee.11 And Jehovah said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people; and they shall go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give unto them.
12 And now, Israel, what doth Jehovah thy God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Jehovah thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,13 to keep the commandments of Jehovah, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?14 Behold, unto Jehovah thy God belongeth heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that is therein.15 Only Jehovah had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all peoples, as at this day.16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.17 For Jehovah your God, he is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the terrible, who regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward.18 He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loveth the sojourner, in giving him food and raiment.19 Love ye therefore the sojourner; for ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt.20 Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God; him shalt thou serve; and to him shalt thou cleave, and by his name shalt thou swear.21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now Jehovah thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Le veau d’or : le pardon de Dieu
1 Alors le Seigneur m’a donné cet ordre : « Taille deux tablettes de pierre, semblables aux précédentes ; fabrique aussi un coffre en bois. Ensuite monte vers moi sur la montagne. 2 J’inscrirai sur les tablettes les commandements qui figuraient sur celles que tu as fracassées, et tu les déposeras dans le coffre. » 3 J’ai donc fabriqué un coffre en bois d’acacia, j’ai taillé deux tablettes de pierre semblables aux précédentes, et je les ai emportées sur la montagne. 4 Le Seigneur a écrit sur les nouvelles tablettes, comme sur les premières, les dix commandements qu’il vous avait communiqués, du milieu du feu, le jour où vous étiez rassemblés au pied de la montagne. Puis il me les a remises.
5 Je suis redescendu de la montagne et je les ai déposées dans le coffre que j’avais fabriqué. Elles y sont restées, comme le Seigneur me l’avait ordonné.
– 6 Les Israélites quittèrent les puits de Bené-Yacan pour Mosséra. C’est là qu’Aaron mourut et fut enterré ; son fils Élazar lui succéda comme prêtret. 7 De là, les Israélites se rendirent à Goudgoda, et de Goudgoda à Yotbata, endroit où l’on trouve plusieurs cours d’eau. 8 A cette époque, le Seigneur confia à la tribu de Lévi les tâches particulières suivantes : porter le coffre de l’alliance du Seigneur, se tenir à la disposition du Seigneur pour le servir, et prononcer la bénédiction en son nom. Ces tâches sont encore les siennes aujourd’huit.
9 C’est la raison pour laquelle cette tribu ne reçut pas de terres en partage parmi les autres ; ce qu’elle a en partage, c’est le privilège de servir le Seigneur, comme le Seigneur votre Dieu le lui a dit. –
10 J’étais resté sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits, comme la fois précédentet. Cette fois-ci encore, le Seigneur a entendu ma prière et il a renoncé à vous exterminer.
11 Il m’a ordonné : « En route, va te mettre à la tête du peuple ; qu’ils aillent conquérir le pays que j’ai juré à leurs ancêtres de leur donner ! »La loi d’amour et d’obéissance
12 Et maintenant, Israélites, qu’est-ce que le Seigneur votre Dieu attend de vous ? Il désire que vous le respectiez en obéissant à sa volonté, en l’aimant et en le servant de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme. 13 Il désire que vous mettiez en pratique ses commandements et ses lois, que je vous communique aujourd’hui pour votre bien. 14 Au Seigneur votre Dieu appartiennent le ciel immense, la terre et tout ce qu’elle abrite. 15 Autrefois, pourtant, le Seigneur ne s’est attaché qu’à vos ancêtres, c’est eux qu’il a aimés ; et maintenant c’est vous, leurs descendants, qu’il a choisis parmi toutes les nations, comme on peut le constater. 16 Soyez donc entièrement consacrés au Seigneur votre Dieut, ne vous révoltez plus contre lui. 17 En effet, il est le Dieu des dieux, le Seigneur des seigneurs, le Dieu grand, puissant et redoutable, qui n’avantage personnet et ne se laisse pas corrompre par des cadeaux. 18 Il prend la défense des orphelins et des veuves, et il manifeste son amour pour les étrangers installés chez vous, en leur donnant de la nourriture et des vêtements.
19 Vous donc aussi, aimez les étrangers qui sont parmi vous ; rappelez-vous que vous étiez des étrangers en Égypte.
20 Respectez le Seigneur votre Dieu, adorez-le, attachez-vous à lui seul, et ne prêtez serment qu’en son nom. 21 C’est à lui que vous devez adresser vos acclamations ; il est votre seul Dieu, lui qui a accompli en votre faveur les actes merveilleux ou effrayants dont vous avez été témoinst. 22 Vos ancêtres n’étaient pas plus de soixante-dix lorsqu’ils sont arrivés en Égypte ; maintenant le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a rendus aussi nombreux que les étoiles dans le cielt.
