Deuteronomy 17
1 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto Jehovah thy God an ox, or a sheep, wherein is a blemish, or anything evil; for that is an abomination unto Jehovah thy God.
2 If there be found in the midst of thee, within any of thy gates which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that doeth that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah thy God, in transgressing his covenant,3 and hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, or the sun, or the moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;4 and it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, then shalt thou inquire diligently; and, behold, if it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel,5 then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, who hath done this evil thing, unto thy gates, even the man or the woman; and thou shalt stone them to death with stones.6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is to die be put to death; at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.7 The hand of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.
8 If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates; then shalt thou arise, and get thee up unto the place which Jehovah thy God shall choose;9 and thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days: and thou shalt inquire; and they shall show thee the sentence of judgment.10 And thou shalt do according to the tenor of the sentence which they shall show thee from that place which Jehovah shall choose; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they shall teach thee:11 according to the tenor of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do; thou shalt not turn aside from the sentence which they shall show thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.12 And the man that doeth presumptuously, in not hearkening unto the priest that standeth to minister there before Jehovah thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.
14 When thou art come unto the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about me;15 thou shalt surely set him king over thee, whom Jehovah thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not put a foreigner over thee, who is not thy brother.16 Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he may multiply horses; forasmuch as Jehovah hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book, out of that which is before the priests the Levites:19 and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life; that he may learn to fear Jehovah his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them;20 that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children, in the midst of Israel.
Deutéronome 17
1 Vous n’offrirez pas en sacrifice au Seigneur votre Dieu un animal, bœuf, mouton ou chèvre, ayant une malformation ou un défaut grave, car le Seigneur juge ce procédé abominable.
2 Un jour peut-être, dans l’une des villes où le Seigneur votre Dieu vous aura permis d’habiter, un homme ou une femme fera ce qui déplaît au Seigneur et sera infidèle aux engagements pris envers Dieu : 3 il ira servir et adorer des dieux étrangers, ou même le soleil, la lune et la multitude des astres. – Jamais le Seigneur ne vous a ordonnét d’agir ainsi ! – 4 Si vous entendez parler d’un cas de ce genre, vous mènerez une enquête minutieuse ; si l’on découvre que cette chose abominable s’est réellement produite en Israël,
5 vous conduirez le coupable, homme ou femme, à la porte de la villet et vous le mettrez à mort en lui jetant des pierres.
6 Un accusé ne pourra être condamné à mort que sur le témoignage de deux ou trois personnes ; le témoignage d’une seule personne ne suffira past.
7 Les témoins seront les premiers à lui jeter des pierres pour le faire mourir, et le reste du peuple interviendra ensuite. Vous ferez ainsi disparaître le mal du milieu de voust.Cas difficiles jugés au sanctuaire
8 Si un tribunal local ne parvient pas à rendre un jugement dans une affaire de meurtre, de coups et blessures, ou dans tout autre litige, vous pourrez vous rendre au lieu que le Seigneur aura choisi. 9 Vous irez y consulter les prêtres-lévitest et le juge en fonction à ce moment-là, et ils vous indiqueront comment juger l’affaire. 10 Vous appliquerez la sentence qu’ils vous communiqueront au sanctuaire du Seigneur, en veillant à suivre exactement les directives reçues. 11 Vous ne vous écarterez en aucune façon des directives et des instructions qui vous seront transmises. 12 Si quelqu’un, dans son orgueil, agit sans tenir compte des directives du prêtre qui exerce son ministère au sanctuaire du Seigneur votre Dieu, ou de celles du juge, cet homme doit être mis à mort. Vous ferez ainsi disparaître le mal du milieu d’Israël.
13 Tout le peuple sera dans la crainte en apprenant ce qui s’est passé, et plus personne n’osera agir avec un tel orgueil.Règles concernant le roi
14 Lorsque vous aurez pénétré dans le pays que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous accordera, que vous en aurez pris possession et vous vous y serez installés, vous désirerez peut-être avoir un roi, pour être comme toutes les nations voisinest. 15 Vous vous donnerez alors pour roi l’homme que le Seigneur votre Dieu choisira lui-même. Ce sera un Israélite ; vous n’accepterez pas comme roi un étranger, quelqu’un qui n’est pas de votre peuple. 16 Votre roi ne devra pas posséder un grand nombre de chevaux, ni envoyer des gens en acheter en Égyptet, car le Seigneur vous a dit que vous n’auriez plus à retourner dans ce pays.
17 Il ne devra pas avoir de nombreuses épouses, ce qui le détournerait de Dieu, ni accumuler beaucoup d’argent et d’ort.
18 Quand le roi aura pris place sur le trône royal, il fera copier pour lui, dans un livre, la présente loi qui aura été conservée par les prêtres-lévitest. 19 Il la gardera auprès de lui et la lira tous les jours de sa vie, afin d’apprendre à respecter le Seigneur son Dieu en veillant à toujours mettre en pratique les exigences et les obligations qu’elle contient. 20 Cela lui évitera de se croire supérieur aux gens de son peuple et de désobéir au moindre détail des commandements. Alors lui-même et ses descendants pourront jouir d’un long règne à la tête d’Israël.
