Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Jehovah spake unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days.2 And Jehovah spake unto me, saying,3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore;5 contend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.6 Ye shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.7 For Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; he hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.8 So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.9 And Jehovah said unto me, Vex not Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.10 (The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim:11 these also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.12 The Horites also dwelt in Seir aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which Jehovah gave unto them.)13 Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.14 And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah sware unto them.15 Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.
16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,17 that Jehovah spake unto me, saying,18 Thou art this day to pass over Ar, the border of Moab:19 and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, vex them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.20 (That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,21 a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Jehovah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead;22 as he did for the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:23 and the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither unto the right hand nor to the left.28 Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet,29 as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us.30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day.31 And Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz.33 And Jehovah our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones; we left none remaining:35 only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken.36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; Jehovah our God delivered up all before us:37 only to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill-country, and wheresoever Jehovah our God forbade us.

1 Ensuite nous avons fait demi-tour et nous sommes repartis par le désert en direction de la mer des Roseauxt, comme le Seigneur me l’avait ordonné. Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps aux alentours de la région montagneuse de Séir.Traversée des pays d’Édom, de Moab et d’Ammon
2 Un jour, le Seigneur m’a dit 3 que nous devions prendre la direction du nord, car nous avions passé suffisamment de temps dans cette région. 4 Il m’a demandé de vous donner les instructions suivantes : « Vous allez traverser la région de Séir, où demeurent vos cousins, les descendants d’Ésaüt. Ils auront peur de vous ; pourtant gardez-vous 5 de les attaquer, car je ne vous attribuerai rien dans leur territoire, pas même un endroit pour y poser le pied. En effet, c’est aux descendants d’Ésaü que j’ai donné en partage la région montagneuse de Séir. 6 Vous leur payerez en argent la nourriture et même l’eau dont vous aurez besoin. »
7 – Et, en effet, le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a bénis dans tout ce que vous avez entrepris, et il a veillé sur vous lors de la traversée de ce grand désert. Durant quarante ans, il a été avec vous, et vous n’avez manqué de rien. –
8 Nous avons renoncé à passer par la région de Séir, où demeurent nos cousins, les descendants d’Ésaü. Nous avons aussi évité la route du fond de la vallée et les localités d’Élath et d’Ession-Guéber. Nous avons changé de direction pour traverser le désert de Moabt. 9 Le Seigneur m’a dit : « Ne provoquez pas les Moabites, n’engagez pas de combat contre eux, car je ne vous attribuerai rien dans leur territoire. En effet, c’est à eux, descendants de Loth, que j’ai donné en partage le pays d’Art. » – 10 Auparavant le pays d’Ar était habité par les Émites, un peuple puissant, nombreux et d’aussi grande taille que les descendants d’Anact. 11 Certains les prenaient pour des Refaïtest, comme les Anaquites, mais les Moabites les appelaient Émites.
12 Quant à la région de Séir, elle était peuplée auparavant de Horites, que les descendants d’Ésaü dépossédèrent et exterminèrent pour s’installer à leur place. Les Israélites agirent de la même façon dans le pays que le Seigneur leur donna et qu’ils occupèrent. –
13 « Et maintenant, mettez-vous en route, a ordonné le Seigneur, et traversez le torrent de Zéredt. » C’est ce que nous avons fait. 14 Trente-huit ans s’étaient écoulés entre le départ de Cadès-Barnéa et le passage du Zéred. A cette époque, toute la génération de ceux qui étaient aptes à combattre au moment du départ avait disparu, comme le Seigneur le leur avait jurét.
15 Le Seigneur lui-même intervint contre eux pour les supprimer jusqu’au dernier.
16 Lorsque toute cette génération du peuple eut disparu, 17 le Seigneur m’a dit ceci : 18 « Vous allez maintenant franchir la frontière de Moab et traverser le pays d’Ar. 19 Vous arriverez en face du pays des Ammonites. Ne provoquez pas ceux-ci, ne les attaquez pas, car je ne vous attribuerai rien dans leur territoire. En effet, ils sont aussi des descendants de Loth, et c’est à eux que j’ai donné ce territoire en partaget. » – 20 On considérait que cette région appartenait aux Refaïtes. Auparavant, en effet, elle était peuplée de Refaïtes que les Ammonites appelaient Zamzoumites. 21 C’était un peuple puissant, nombreux et d’aussi grande taille que les descendants d’Anac. Mais le Seigneur les extermina à l’arrivée des Ammonites, qui les dépossédèrent et s’installèrent à leur place. 22 Le Seigneur agit de la même façon en faveur des Édomites, descendants d’Ésaü, qui habitent la région de Séir : il extermina les Horites à l’arrivée des Édomites qui les dépossédèrent et s’installèrent à leur place ; et ils y sont encore aujourd’hui.
23 Quant aux Avites, qui demeuraient dans les localités de la région de Gaza, les gens venus de Kaftort les exterminèrent et s’installèrent à leur place. –
24 Ensuite le Seigneur a ordonné : « Mettez-vous en route et traversez le torrent de l’Arnon. Je vais livrer en votre pouvoir le roi amorite Sihon, de Hèchebon, et son pays. Commencez la conquête, déclarez-lui la guerre !
25 Dès aujourd’hui, je vais faire en sorte que toutes les nations du monde vivent dans la crainte et même la frayeur à votre égard. Aussitôt qu’elles entendront parler de vous, elles trembleront d’angoisse. »Occupation du royaume de Sihon
26 Du désert de Quedémotht, j’ai envoyé des messagers au roi Sihon, de Hèchebon, avec cette proposition pacifique : 27 « Nous désirons traverser ton pays. Nous nous déplacerons uniquement sur la route, sans nous en écarter ni à droite ni à gauche. 28 Nous te payerons en argent la nourriture et l’eau dont nous aurons besoin. Laisse-nous simplement traverser ton pays ; 29 les descendants d’Ésaü, qui habitent la région de Séir, et les Moabites, qui habitent le pays d’Ar, nous ont bien autorisés à traverser le leurt. Nous franchirons ensuite le Jourdain pour gagner le pays que le Seigneur notre Dieu nous donne. » 30 Mais le roi Sihon nous a refusé l’autorisation de passer chez lui ; en effet le Seigneur votre Dieu l’avait rendu totalement inflexible, pour vous permettre de vous emparer de son pays, que vous occupez encore aujourd’hui. 31 Le Seigneur m’a dit : « Écoute, dès maintenant je livre Sihon et son pays en ton pouvoir. Commencez la conquête par ce territoire. » 32 Sihon et toute son armée se sont mis en campagne et sont venus nous combattre à Yahas. 33 Le Seigneur notre Dieu nous a donné la victoire : nous les avons battus, lui, ses fils et toute son armée. 34 Aussitôt après, nous nous sommes emparés de toutes ses villes ; nous les avons complètement détruites, et nous y avons exterminé les hommes, les femmes et les enfants ; nous n’avons laissé aucun survivant. 35 Nous nous sommes contentés de prendre comme butin le bétail, ainsi que les biens trouvés dans les villes conquises. 36 De la ville d’Aroër sur l’Arnon et de l’autre ville située dans la même vallée, jusqu’au pays de Galaad, aucune ville ne fut assez forte pour nous résister. Le Seigneur notre Dieu les a toutes livrées en notre pouvoir. 37 Mais nous n’avons pas touché au territoire des Ammonites : nous avons respecté toute la région située sur la rive du cours du Yabboc, de même que les villes dans la région montagneuse, et les endroits que le Seigneur notre Dieu avait ordonné d’épargner.
