Joshua 24

1 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.3 And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.4 And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.7 And when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;10 but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.11 And ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.13 And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah.15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.

16 And the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods;17 for Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;18 and Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.

19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.20 If ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah.22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.23 Now therefore put away, said he, the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.24 And the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

29 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.31 And Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.

32 And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.

Le rappel des hauts faits de Dieu: prologue historique

1 Josué rassembla toutes les tribus d’Israël à Sichem. Il convoqua les responsables, les chefs, les juges et les officiers d’Israël et ils se placèrent devant Dieu.

2 Alors Josué dit à tout le peuple:
—Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël: Il y a bien longtemps, vos ancêtres, en particulier Térah, le père d’Abraham et de Nahor, ont habité de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate et ils rendaient un culte à d’autres dieux.

3 J’ai fait venir votre ancêtre Abraham d’au-delà de l’Euphrate, je lui ai fait parcourir tout le pays de Canaan et j’ai multiplié ses descendants. Je lui ai donné pour fils Isaac,

4 auquel j’ai donné Jacob et Esaü. A ce dernier, j’ai attribué en propriété la région montagneuse de Séir; et Jacob et ses fils se sont rendus en Egypte.

5 Plus tard, j’ai envoyé Moïse et Aaron, j’ai infligé à l’Egypte divers fléaux par tout ce que j’ai fait au milieu d’elle; après quoi je vous en ai fait sortir.

6 Après que j’ai fait sortir vos ancêtres d’Egypte, ils sont arrivés à la mer des *Roseaux, mais les Egyptiens les ont poursuivis jusque là avec des chars et des cavaliers.

7 Alors ils m’ont imploré et j’ai interposé un écran de ténèbres entre votre peuple et les Egyptiens. Puis l’eau est revenue sur ces derniers et les a submergés. Vous avez vu de vos yeux ce que j’ai fait aux Egyptiens. Après cela, vous êtes restés pendant très longtemps dans le désert.

8 Ensuite, je vous ai fait pénétrer dans le pays des Amoréens établis à l’est du *Jourdain. Ils vous ont combattus, mais je vous ai donné la victoire sur eux, et vous avez pris possession de leur pays, car je les ai détruits devant vous.

9 Le roi de Moab, Balaq, fils de Tsippor, a également entrepris de faire la guerre à votre peuple. Il a appelé Balaam, fils de Beor, pour qu’il vienne vous maudire.

10 Mais j’ai refusé d’écouter Balaam, qui a dû, au contraire, vous bénir, et je vous ai délivrés de lui.

11 Vous avez traversé le Jourdain et vous êtes arrivés à Jéricho. Les habitants de cette ville ont combattu contre vous et je vous ai donné la victoire sur eux, de même que sur les Amoréens, les Phéréziens, les Cananéens, les Hittites, les Guirgasiens, les Héviens et les Yebousiens.

12 J’ai envoyé devant vous les frelons qui les ont chassés devant vous, comme je l’avais fait pour les deux rois des Amoréens. Ainsi ce ne sont ni vos épées, ni vos arcs qui vous ont donné la victoire.

13 Je vous ai donné un pays que vous n’aviez pas cultivé, des villes que vous n’aviez pas bâties et où vous êtes installés, des vignobles et des oliviers que vous n’aviez pas plantés, mais dont vous mangez les fruits.

Les Israélites choisissent d’adorer l’Eternel

14 —Maintenant donc, dit Josué, respectez l’Eternel et servez-le de façon irréprochable et avec fidélité. Rejetez les dieux auxquels vos ancêtres rendaient un culte de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate et en Egypte, et rendez un culte à l’Eternel seulement.

15 S’il vous déplaît de servir l’Eternel, alors choisissez aujourd’hui à quels dieux vous voulez rendre un culte: ceux que vos ancêtres adoraient de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate ou ceux des Amoréens dont vous habitez le pays; quant à moi et à ma famille, nous adorerons l’Eternel.

16 Le peuple répondit:
—Loin de nous la pensée d’abandonner l’Eternel pour adorer d’autres dieux!

17 Car c’est l’Eternel notre Dieu qui nous a fait sortir, nous et nos ancêtres, d’Egypte, le pays où nous étions esclaves, il a accompli sous nos yeux des signes extraordinaires, il nous a protégés tout au long du chemin que nous avons parcouru et parmi tous les peuples dont nous avons traversé le territoire.

18 C’est l’Eternel qui a chassé devant nous tous ces peuples, et en particulier les Amoréens qui habitaient la contrée. Oui, nous aussi, nous voulons adorer l’Eternel, car il est notre Dieu.

19 Alors Josué dit au peuple:
—Vous ne serez pas capables de servir l’Eternel, car c’est un Dieu saint, un Dieu qui ne tolère aucun rival. Il ne tolérera ni vos révoltes ni vos péchés.

20 Si vous l’abandonnez pour adorer des dieux étrangers, il se retournera contre vous pour vous faire du mal. Après vous avoir fait tant de bien, il vous consumera.

21 —Non, répondit le peuple. C’est bien l’Eternel que nous voulons adorer!

22 Josué reprit:
—Vous êtes vous-mêmes témoins contre vous que vous avez vous-mêmes choisi l’Eternel pour l’adorer.
Ils répondirent:
—Nous en sommes témoins.

23 —Dans ce cas, dit Josué, débarrassez-vous des dieux étrangers qui se trouvent encore au milieu de vous et tournez-vous de tout votre cœur vers l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël.

24 Le peuple répondit:
—Nous adorerons l’Eternel notre Dieu, et nous lui obéirons.

La conclusion de l’alliance

25 Ce jour-là à Sichem, Josué conclut une alliance avec le peuple et lui donna une Loi et des décrets,

26 Josué consigna ces choses par écrit dans le livre de la Loi de Dieu. Puis il prit une grande pierre et la dressa là, sous le chêne qui se trouvait dans l’enceinte du sanctuaire de l’Eternel,

27 et il dit à tout le peuple:
—Cette pierre servira de témoin entre nous, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que l’Eternel nous a adressées. Oui, elle servira de témoin contre vous pour que vous ne reniiez pas votre Dieu.

28 A la fin, Josué congédia le peuple pour que chacun rentre chez soi.

La mort de Josué

29 Après ces événements, Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de l’Eternel, mourut à l’âge de 110 ans.

30 On l’enterra dans le domaine qu’il avait reçu pour propriété, à Timnath-Sérah, dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.

31 Les Israélites servirent l’Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué et, après sa mort, tant que vécurent les responsables qui avaient vu toute l’œuvre de l’Eternel en faveur d’Israël.

32 On ensevelit aussi à Sichem les ossements de Joseph que les Israélites avaient ramenés d’Egypte. On les inhuma dans le terrain que Jacob avait acheté pour cent pièces d’argent aux descendants de Hamor, le père de Sichem, et qui faisait partie du *patrimoine des descendants de Joseph.

33 Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, mourut aussi et on l’enterra sur la colline qui avait été attribuée à son fils Phinéas dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm.
