Judges 2

1 And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:2 and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.4 And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

6 Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.7 And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;12 and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.13 And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.14 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

16 And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.17 And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; but they did not so.18 And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.19 But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.20 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;22 that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.23 So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Juges 2

Les Israélites sont infidèles

1 L’*ange de l’Eternel monta de Guilgal à Bokim et déclara au peuple d’Israël:
—Je vous ai fait sortir d’Egypte et je vous ai amenés dans le pays que j’ai solennellement promis à vos ancêtres. J’ai déclaré que je ne romprais jamais mon alliance avec vous.

2 Et vous de même, vous ne conclurez pas d’alliance avec les habitants de ce pays et vous démolirez leurs autels. Or, vous ne m’avez pas obéi. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela?

3 Aussi ai-je résolu de ne pas déposséder les habitants du pays en votre faveur. Ils resteront pour vous des adversaires et leurs dieux seront un piège pour vous.

4 Lorsque l’*ange de l’Eternel eut adressé ces paroles au peuple d’Israël, tous se mirent à se lamenter et à pleurer.

5 Ils appelèrent l’endroit Bokim (Les pleureurs) et ils offrirent des sacrifices à l’Eternel.

L’HISTOIRE DES CHEFS EN ISRAEL

6 Après que Josué eut renvoyé le peuple, les Israélites se rendirent chacun dans son *patrimoine pour prendre possession du pays.

7 Ils servirent l’Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué et, après sa mort, tant que vécurent les responsables qui avaient vu toute l’œuvre de l’Eternel en faveur d’Israël.

8 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de l’Eternel, mourut à l’âge de 110 ans.

9 On l’enterra dans le domaine qu’il avait reçu pour propriété à Timnath-Hérès, dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.

10 Tous ceux de sa génération disparurent à leur tour. Une nouvelle génération se leva, qui ne connaissait pas l’Eternel, et n’avait pas vu les œuvres qu’il avait accomplies en faveur d’Israël.

11 Alors les Israélites firent ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal, et ils se mirent à rendre un culte aux dieux *Baals.

12 Ils abandonnèrent l’Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres qui les avait fait sortir d’Egypte, et se rallièrent à d’autres dieux, à ceux des peuples qui vivaient autour d’eux. Ils se prosternèrent devant ces dieux et irritèrent l’Eternel.

13 Ainsi, ils abandonnèrent l’Eternel pour rendre un culte aux Baals et aux *Astartés.

14 Alors l’Eternel se mit en colère contre les Israélites et il les abandonna aux violences de pillards qui les dépouillèrent; il les livra au pouvoir de leurs ennemis d’alentour, de sorte qu’ils ne furent plus capables de leur résister.

15 Chaque fois qu’ils entreprenaient une campagne, l’Eternel intervenait contre eux pour leur malheur, comme il le leur avait déclaré, et même annoncé par serment. Ainsi ils furent réduits à la plus grande détresse.

16 Alors l’Eternel leur suscita des chefs qui les délivrèrent des pillards.

17 Mais les Israélites n’obéirent pas non plus à ces chefs, ils se *prostituaient avec d’autres dieux et se prosternaient devant eux. Ils s’écartèrent très vite du chemin qu’avaient suivi leurs ancêtres qui obéissaient aux commandements de l’Eternel; ils ne suivirent pas leur exemple.

18 Chaque fois que l’Eternel leur suscitait un chef, il aidait cet homme, et il délivrait les Israélites de leurs ennemis pendant toute la vie de ce chef. En effet, lorsque l’Eternel entendait son peuple gémir sous le joug de ses oppresseurs et de ceux qui le maltraitaient, il avait pitié d’eux.

19 Mais après la mort du chef, le peuple recommençait à se corrompre encore plus que les générations précédentes, en se ralliant à d’autres dieux pour leur rendre un culte et se prosterner devant eux; ils refusaient d’abandonner leurs pratiques et s’obstinaient dans leur conduite.

Dieu met son peuple à l’épreuve

20 L’Eternel se mit donc en colère contre Israël et déclara:
—Puisque ce peuple a violé l’alliance que j’avais conclue avec leurs ancêtres et qu’il ne m’écoute pas,

21 désormais, je ne déposséderai plus devant eux une seule des nations qui subsistaient dans le pays à la mort de Josué.

22 Elles me serviront à éprouver les Israélites pour voir si oui ou non ils suivent la voie que je leur ai prescrite et m’obéissent comme l’ont fait leurs ancêtres.

23 L’Eternel laissa donc subsister, sans se presser de les déposséder, ces nations qu’il n’avait pas livrées au pouvoir de Josué.
