Judges 8

1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.2 And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?3 God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

4 And Gideon came to the Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?7 And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.14 And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.17 And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.19 And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.20 And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks.

22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.24 And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.26 And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels’ necks.27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.28 So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.34 And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;35 neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

Juges 8

1 Les hommes d’Ephraïm dirent à Gédéon:
—Pourquoi as-tu agi de cette manière envers nous? Pourquoi ne nous as-tu pas appelés en renfort quand tu es parti combattre les Madianites?
Et ils le prirent violemment à partie.

2 Gédéon leur répondit:
—Qu’ai-je fait en comparaison de vous? Le grappillage d’Ephraïm a été plus productif que toute la vendange de la famille d’Abiézer.

3 Après tout: c’est à vous que Dieu a livré les chefs madianites Oreb et Zeeb. Qu’ai-je pu faire en comparaison avec vous?
Ces paroles apaisèrent leur colère.

La victoire sur les rois madianites

4 —Lorsqu’il atteignit le Jourdain, Gédéon le traversa avec les trois cents hommes qui l’accompagnaient. Malgré leur fatigue, ils continuaient à poursuivre l’ennemi.

5 Arrivés à la ville de Soukkoth, Gédéon dit à ses habitants:
—Donnez, je vous prie, des miches de pain aux hommes qui m’accompagnent, car ils sont épuisés et je suis à la poursuite des deux rois madianites Zébah et Tsalmounna.

6 Mais les chefs de Soukkoth lui répondirent:
—Tiens-tu déjà Zébah et Tsalmounna en ton pouvoir pour que nous donnions du pain à ta troupe?

7 —Eh bien, riposta Gédéon, quand l’Eternel aura livré Zébah et Tsalmounna en mon pouvoir, je vous fouetterai avec des chardons et des épines du désert!

8 De là, Gédéon se rendit à Penouél où il adressa la même demande aux habitants. Il reçut la même réponse qu’à Soukkoth

9 et déclara aux gens de Penouél:
—Quand je repasserai, une fois le combat terminé, je démolirai cette tour.

10 Or, Zébah et Tsalmounna s’étaient retranchés à Qarqor avec leur troupe qui comprenait quinze mille hommes. C’était tout ce qui leur restait de la grande armée des bédouins de l’Orient. En effet, cent vingt mille soldats étaient déjà tombés.

11 Gédéon prit la route des caravanes de nomades à l’est de Nobah et de Yogbeha et attaqua le camp ennemi qui se croyait en sécurité.

12 Les deux rois de Madian, Zébah et Tsalmounna, s’enfuirent, Gédéon les poursuivit, il les captura tous les deux et sema la panique dans toute leur armée.

Le châtiment de Soukkoth et de Penouél

13 Lorsque la guerre fut terminée, Gédéon fils de Joas retourna par la montée de Hérès.

14 Il mit la main sur un jeune homme de Soukkoth qu’il questionna et qui lui inscrivit les noms des soixante-dix-sept chefs et responsables de Soukkoth.

15 Gédéon alla trouver les habitants de Soukkoth et leur dit:
—Rappelez-vous comment vous m’avez insulté en disant: «Tiens-tu déjà Zébah et Tsalmounna en ton pouvoir pour que nous soyons obligés de donner du pain à tes gens fatigués?» Eh bien, les voilà!

16 Alors il fit saisir les responsables de la ville et les fit fouetter à coups de chardons et d’épines du désert.

17 Il démolit aussi la tour de Penouél et massacra les hommes de la localité.

18 Puis il demanda à Zébah et Tsalmounna:
—Comment étaient les hommes que vous avez tués au Thabor?
—Ils te ressemblaient, répondirent-ils, ils avaient le port d’un fils de roi.

19 —C’étaient mes frères, les fils de ma propre mère, s’écria Gédéon. Par le Dieu vivant je jure que si vous les aviez épargnés, je ne vous tuerais pas non plus.

20 Puis il ordonna à son fils aîné Yéter:
—Viens, tue-les!
Mais le jeune homme ne dégaina pas son épée, car il n’était encore qu’un jeune garçon et il avait peur.

21 Zébah et Tsalmounna dirent alors à Gédéon:
—Frappe-nous donc toi-même, car c’est la tâche d’un homme fort.
Alors Gédéon tua Zébah et Tsalmounna. Puis il prit les ornements en forme de croissants qui pendaient au cou de leurs chameaux.

Gédéon refuse la royauté

22 Après cela, les hommes d’Israël dirent à Gédéon:
—Règne sur nous, puisque tu nous as délivrés des Madianites. Ton fils, puis ton petit-fils te succéderont.

23 Gédéon leur répondit:
—Non, je ne régnerai pas sur vous, et mon fils ne vous gouvernera pas non plus. C’est l’Eternel qui régnera sur vous.

24 Puis il ajouta: J’aurais cependant une demande à vous faire: Donnez-moi chacun une boucle d’oreille en or prise sur votre butin.
Les ennemis portaient, en effet, des boucles d’or, car ils étaient ismaélites.

25 —Très volontiers, lui répondirent-ils.
Ils étendirent un manteau par terre, et chacun y jeta un anneau prélevé sur son butin.

26 Les anneaux d’or que Gédéon avait demandés pesaient près de vingt kilogrammes en tout. Il reçut également les croissants d’or, les pendants d’oreilles et les manteaux de pourpre que portaient les rois madianites, ainsi que les colliers qui ornaient le cou de leurs chameaux.

27 Avec l’or, Gédéon fabriqua une statue qu’il installa dans son village, à Ophra. Tout Israël s’y *prostitua, en lui rendant un culte, de sorte que cette statue devint un piège pour Gédéon et pour sa famille.

La fin de la vie de Gédéon

28 Ainsi les Madianites furent affaiblis par les Israélites et ils ne se relevèrent pas de leur défaite. Aussi longtemps que Gédéon vécut, c’est-à-dire encore pendant quarante ans, le pays jouit de la paix.

29 Yeroubbaal, fils de Joas, s’en retourna dans sa maison et y demeura.

30 Gédéon eut soixante-dix fils car il avait de nombreuses femmes.

31 Une épouse de second rang habitant à Sichem lui donna aussi un fils qu’il appela Abimélek.

32 Après une heureuse vieillesse, Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut et fut enterré dans le tombeau de Joas son père, à Ophra de la famille d’Abiézer.

33 Après la mort de Gédéon, les Israélites recommencèrent à se prostituer aux *Baals et adoptèrent Baal-Berith comme dieu.

34 Ils oublièrent l’Eternel leur Dieu qui les avait délivrés de tous les ennemis qui les entouraient.

35 Ils ne témoignèrent aucune gratitude à la famille de Yeroubbaal-Gédéon pour tout le bien que celui-ci avait fait à Israël.
