Leviticus 19

1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy; for I Jehovah your God am holy.3 Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father; and ye shall keep my sabbaths: I am Jehovah your God.4 Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am Jehovah your God.

5 And when ye offer a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto Jehovah, ye shall offer it that ye may be accepted.6 It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if aught remain until the third day, it shall be burnt with fire.7 And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination; it shall not be accepted:8 but every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the holy thing of Jehovah: and that soul shall be cut off from his people.

9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleaning of thy harvest.10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather the fallen fruit of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am Jehovah your God.

11 Ye shall not steal; neither shall ye deal falsely, nor lie one to another.12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of thy God: I am Jehovah.

13 Thou shalt not oppress thy neighbor, nor rob him: the wages of a hired servant shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind; but thou shalt fear thy God: I am Jehovah.

15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor: I am Jehovah.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.18 Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am Jehovah.

19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with two kinds of seed: neither shall there come upon thee a garment of two kinds of stuff mingled together.20 And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to a husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; they shall be punished; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.21 And he shall bring his trespass-offering unto Jehovah, unto the door of the tent of meeting, even a ram for a trespass-offering.22 And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass-offering before Jehovah for his sin which he hath sinned: and the sin which he hath sinned shall be forgiven him.23 And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as their uncircumcision: three years shall they be as uncircumcised unto you; it shall not be eaten.24 But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy, for giving praise unto Jehovah.25 And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am Jehovah your God.

26 Ye shall not eat anything with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantments, nor practise augury.27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am Jehovah.

29 Profane not thy daughter, to make her a harlot; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.30 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary; I am Jehovah.

31 Turn ye not unto them that have familiar spirits, nor unto the wizards; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I am Jehovah your God.

32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and thou shalt fear thy God: I am Jehovah.

33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not do him wrong.34 The stranger that sojourneth with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt: I am Jehovah your God.

35 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measures of length, of weight, or of quantity.36 Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.37 And ye shall observe all my statutes, and all mine ordinances, and do them: I am Jehovah.

«Vous serez saints»

1 L’Eternel s’adressa à Moïse en ces termes:

2 —Parle à toute la communauté des Israélites et dis-leur: Soyez saints, car je suis saint, moi l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

3 Que chacun de vous respecte sa mère et son père, et observe les jours de repos que j’ai prescrits. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

4 Ne vous tournez pas vers les faux dieux, ne vous fabriquez pas d’idoles sous forme de statues en métal fondu. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

5 Lorsque vous m’offrirez un sacrifice de communion, faites-le de façon à ce qu’il puisse être agréé.

6 La victime sera mangée le jour même où vous l’offrirez en sacrifice, ou le lendemain; ce qui en restera le troisième jour sera brûlé,

7 le troisième jour, si on en mange, ce sera impur et le sacrifice ne sera pas agréé.

8 Celui qui en mangera portera le poids de sa faute, car il a profané une chose consacrée à l’Eternel, et il sera retranché de son peuple.

9 Quand vous ferez les moissons dans votre pays, tu ne couperas pas les épis jusqu’au bord de ton champ, et tu ne ramasseras pas ce qui reste à glaner.

10 De même, tu ne cueilleras pas les grappes restées dans ta vigne et tu ne ramasseras pas les fruits qui y seront tombés. Tu laisseras tout cela au pauvre et à l’immigré. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

11 Vous ne commettrez pas de vol, vous n’userez ni de mensongeni de tromperie à l’égard de votre prochain.

12 Vous ne prononcerez pas de faux serment par mon nom, car en faisant cela, vous profaneriez le nom de votre Dieu. Je suis l’Eternel.

13 Tu n’exploiteras pas ton prochain et tu ne le voleras pas. Tu ne retiendras pas le salaire d’un ouvrier jusqu’au lendemain matin.

14 Tu n’insulteras pas un sourd et tu ne mettras pas d’obstacle sur le chemin d’un aveugle, et ainsi tu révéreras ton Dieu. Je suis l’Eternel.

15 Vous ne commettrez pas d’injustice dans les jugements. Tu n’avantageras pas le pauvre, et tu ne favoriseras pas le grand; tu jugeras ton prochain selon la justice.

16 Tu ne calomnieras pas les membres de ton peuple; tu ne porteras pas atteinte à la vie de ton prochain par un faux témoignage. Je suis l’Eternel.

17 Tu ne haïras pas ton frère dans ton cœur, mais tu ne manqueras pas de reprendre ton prochain pour ne pas te charger d’un péché à son égard.

18 Tu ne te vengeras pas et tu ne garderas pas de rancune envers les membres de ton peuple, mais tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Je suis l’Eternel.

19 Vous obéirez à mes commandements. Tu n’accoupleras pas des animaux de ton bétail d’espèces différentes. Tu n’ensemenceras pas ton champ de deux espèces de graines. Tu ne porteras pas un vêtement tissé de deux fibres différentes.

20 Si un homme couche avec une servante fiancée à un autre homme sans qu’elle ait été ni achetée ni affranchie, il versera une indemnité, mais les deux ne seront pas punis de mort car elle n’avait pas encore été affranchie.

21 Cet homme apportera à l’Eternel, à l’entrée de la *tente de la Rencontre, comme sacrifice de réparation pour sa faute, un bélier

22 avec lequel le prêtre accomplira le rite d’*expiation pour lui devant l’Eternel, pour le péché qu’il a commis, et il lui sera pardonné.

23 Quand vous serez entrés dans le pays promis et que vous planterez toutes sortes d’arbres fruitiers, vous considérerez pendant trois ans leurs fruits comme impurs, vous n’en mangerez donc pas.

24 La quatrième année, tous leurs fruits seront consacrés à l’Eternel en témoignage de reconnaissance.

25 La cinquième année, vous en mangerez les fruits. Ainsi vous aurez des récoltes abondantes. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

26 Vous ne mangerez aucune viande contenant encore son sang. Vous ne pratiquerez pas la divination; vous ne rechercherez pas les augures.

27 Vous ne vous taillerez pas en rond le bord de votre chevelure, vous ne vous raserez pas les coins de la barbe.

28 Vous ne vous ferez pas d’incisions sur le corps à cause d’un mort et vous ne ferez pas dessiner des tatouages sur le corps. Je suis l’Eternel.

29 Ne déshonorez pas vos filles en faisant d’elles des *prostituées; le pays entier s’adonnerait à la prostitution et se remplirait d’immoralité.

30 Vous observerez les jours de repos que je vous ai prescrits et vous respecterez mon sanctuaire. Je suis l’Eternel.

31 Ne vous adressez ni à des médiums, ni à des devins; ne les consultez pas, vous vous rendriez impurs. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

32 Tu te lèveras devant ceux qui ont des cheveux blancs, tu honoreras la personne du vieillard, c’est ainsi que tu révéreras ton Dieu. Je suis l’Eternel.

33 Si un étranger vient s’installer dans votre pays, ne l’exploitez pas.

34 Traitez-le comme s’il était l’un des vôtres. Tu l’aimeras comme toi-même: car vous avez été vous-mêmes étrangers en Egypte. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

35 Vous ne commettrez pas de malhonnêteté en fraudant sur les mesures de longueur, de poids ou de capacité.

36 Vous vous servirez de balances justes, de poids justes, de mesures de capacité justes. Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu, qui vous ai fait sortir d’Egypte.

37 Vous obéirez donc à toutes mes ordonnances et à toutes mes lois et vous les appliquerez. Je suis l’Eternel.
