Luke 18

1 And he spake a parable unto them to the end that they ought always to pray, and not to faint;2 saying, There was in a city a judge, who feared not God, and regarded not man:3 and there was a widow in that city; and she came oft unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;5 yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest she wear me out by her continual coming.6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge saith.7 And shall not God avenge his elect, that cry to him day and night, and yet he is longsuffering over them?8 I say unto you, that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?9 And he spake also this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and set all others at nought:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.12 I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get.13 But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner.14 I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.15 And they were bringing unto him also their babes, that he should touch them: but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.16 But Jesus called them unto him, saying, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein.18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, even God.20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor thy father and mother.21 And he said, All these things have I observed from my youth up.22 And when Jesus heard it, he said unto him, One thing thou lackest yet: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.23 But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was very rich.24 And Jesus seeing him said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!25 For it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.26 And they that heard it said, Then who can be saved?27 But he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.28 And Peter said, Lo, we have left our own, and followed thee.29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or wife, or brethren, or parents, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,30 who shall not receive manifold more in this time, and in the world to come eternal life.31 And he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written through the prophets shall be accomplished unto the Son of man.32 For he shall be delivered up unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and shamefully treated, and spit upon:33 and they shall scourge and kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.34 And they understood none of these things; and this saying was hid from them, and they perceived not the things that were said.35 And it came to pass, as he drew nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:36 and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant.37 And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.39 And they that went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried out the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.40 And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,41 What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.42 And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight; thy faith hath made thee whole.43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.

Luc 18

Prier avec insistance

1 Pour montrer qu’il est nécessaire de prier constamment, sans jamais se décourager, Jésus raconta à ses *disciples la *parabole suivante:

2 —Il y avait dans une ville un juge qui ne révérait pas Dieu et n’avait d’égards pour personne.

3 Il y avait aussi, dans cette même ville, une veuve qui venait constamment le trouver pour lui dire: «Défends mon droit contre mon adversaire.»

4 Pendant longtemps, il refusa. Mais il finit par se dire: «J’ai beau ne pas révérer Dieu et ne pas me préoccuper des hommes,

5 cette veuve m’ennuie; je vais donc lui donner gain de cause pour qu’elle ne vienne plus sans cesse me casser la tête.»

6 Le Seigneur ajouta:
—Notez bien comment ce mauvais juge réagit.

7 Alors, pouvez-vous supposer que Dieu ne défendra pas le droit de ceux qu’il a choisis et qui crient à lui jour et nuit, et qu’il tardera à leur venir en aide?

8 Moi je vous dis qu’il défendra leur droit promptement. Seulement, lorsque le *Fils de l’homme viendra, trouvera-t-il encore la foi sur la terre?

Qui sera déclaré juste?

9 Il raconta aussi une parabole pour ceux qui étaient convaincus d’être justes et méprisaient les autres:

10 —Deux hommes montèrent au *Temple pour prier: un *pharisien et un *collecteur d’impôts.

11 Le pharisien, debout, faisait intérieurement cette prière:
«O Dieu, je te remercie de ne pas être avare, malhonnête et adultère comme les autres hommes, et en particulier comme ce collecteur d’impôts là-bas.

12 Moi, je jeûne deux jours par semaine, je donne dix pour cent de tous mes revenus.»

13 Le collecteur d’impôts se tenait dans un coin retiré, et n’osait même pas lever les yeux au ciel. Mais il se frappait la poitrine et murmurait:
«O Dieu, aie pitié du pécheur que je suis!»

14 Je vous l’assure, c’est ce dernier et non pas l’autre qui est rentré chez lui déclaré juste par Dieu. Car celui qui s’élève sera abaissé; celui qui s’abaisse sera élevé.

Jésus accueille des enfants

(Mt 19.13-15; Mc 10.13-16)

15 Des gens amenèrent à Jésus de tout petits enfants pour qu’il pose les mains sur eux. Mais, quand les disciples virent cela, ils leur firent des reproches.

16 Jésus les fit venir et leur dit:
—Laissez les petits enfants venir à moi et ne les en empêchez pas, car le *royaume de Dieu appartient à ceux qui leur ressemblent.

17 Vraiment, je vous l’assure: Celui qui ne reçoit pas le royaume de Dieu comme un petit enfant, n’y entrera pas.

Les riches et le royaume

(Mt 19.16-30; Mc 10.17-31)

18 Alors un notable lui demanda:
—Bon Maître, que dois-je faire pour obtenir la vie éternelle?

19 —Pourquoi m’appelles-tu bon? lui répondit Jésus. Personne n’est bon, sinon Dieu seul.

20 Tu connais les commandements: Ne commets pas d’adultère, ne commets pas de meurtre, ne vole pas, ne porte pas de faux témoignage, honore ton père et ta m ère .

21 —Tout cela, lui répondit l’homme, je l’ai appliqué depuis ma jeunesse.

22 A ces mots, Jésus lui dit:
—Il te reste encore une chose à faire: vends tout ce que tu possèdes, distribue le produit de la vente aux pauvres, et tu auras un trésor au ciel. Puis viens et suis-moi!

23 Quand l’autre entendit cela, il fut profondément attristé, car il était très riche.

24 En le voyant ainsi abattu, Jésus dit:
—Qu’il est difficile à ceux qui ont des richesses d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu!

25 Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou d’une aiguille qu’à un riche d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.

26 Les auditeurs s’écrièrent:
—Mais alors, qui peut être *sauvé?

27 Jésus leur répondit:
—Ce qui est impossible aux hommes est possible à Dieu.

28 Alors Pierre lui fit remarquer:
—Et nous? Nous avons abandonné tout ce que nous avions pour te suivre.

29 Jésus leur dit:
—Vraiment, je vous l’assure, si quelqu’un quitte, à cause du royaume de Dieu, sa maison, sa femme, ses frères, ses parents ou ses enfants,

30 il recevra beaucoup plus en retour dès à présent, et, dans le monde à venir, la vie éternelle.

Ce qui attend Jésus à Jérusalem

(Mt 20.17-19; Mc 10.32-34)

31 Jésus prit les Douze à part et leur dit:
—Voici: nous montons à *Jérusalem et tout ce que les *prophètes ont écrit au sujet du *Fils de l’homme va s’accomplir.

32 En effet, il sera remis entre les mains des païens, on se moquera de lui, on l’insultera, on crachera sur lui.

33 Et après l’avoir battu à coups de fouet, on le mettra à mort. Puis, le troisième jour, il ressuscitera.

34 Les disciples ne comprirent rien à tout cela, c’était pour eux un langage énigmatique et ils ne savaient pas ce que Jésus voulait dire.

La guérison d’un aveugle

(Mt 20.29-34; Mc 10.46-52)

35 Comme Jésus approchait de Jéricho, un aveugle était assis au bord du chemin, en train de mendier.

36 En entendant le bruit de la foule qui passait, il demanda ce que c’était.

37 On lui répondit que c’était Jésus de *Nazareth qui passait.

38 Alors il se mit à crier très fort:
—Jésus, *Fils de David, aie pitié de moi!

39 Ceux qui marchaient en tête du cortège le rabrouèrent pour le faire taire, mais lui criait de plus belle:
—Fils de David, aie pitié de moi!

40 Jésus s’arrêta et ordonna qu’on lui amène l’aveugle. Quand il fut près de lui, Jésus lui demanda:

41 —Que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi?
L’aveugle lui répondit:
—Seigneur, fais que je puisse voir.

42 —Tu peux voir, lui dit Jésus. Parce que tu as eu foi en moi, tu es guéri.

43 Aussitôt, il recouvra la vue et suivit Jésus en louant Dieu. En voyant ce qui s’était passé, toute la foule se mit aussi à louer Dieu.
