Luke 2
1 Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.2 This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.3 And all went to enrol themselves, every one to his own city.4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;5 to enrol himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child.6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered.7 And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.8 And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.9 And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.10 And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:11 for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.12 And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.
15 And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.16 And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.17 And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child.18 And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds.19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them.21 And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.26 And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law,28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace;
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;
32 A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him;34 and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against;35 yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,37 and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.39 And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.40 And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.41 And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast;43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not;44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance:45 and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him.46 And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions:47 and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48 And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house?50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

La naissance de Jésus
(Mt 1.18-25)
1 En ce temps-là, l’empereur Auguste publia un édit qui ordonnait le recensement de tous les habitants de l’Empire.
2 Ce recensement, le premier du genre, eut lieu à l’époque où Quirinius était gouverneur de la province de *Syrie.
3 Tout le monde allait se faire recenser, chacun dans la localité dont il était originaire.
4 C’est ainsi que Joseph, lui aussi, partit de *Nazareth et monta de la *Galilée en *Judée, à Bethléhem, la ville de *David: il appartenait, en effet, à la famille de *David.
5 Il s’y rendit pour se faire recenser avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui attendait un enfant.
6 Or, durant leur séjour à Bethléhem, arriva le moment où Marie devait accoucher.
7 Elle mit au monde un fils: son premier-né. Elle lui mit des langes et le coucha dans une mangeoire parce qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour eux dans la pièce réservée aux hôtes.
8 Dans les champs environnants, des bergers passaient la nuit pour garder leurs troupeaux.
9 Un *ange du Seigneur leur apparut et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d’eux. Une grande frayeur les saisit.
10 Mais l’ange les rassura:
—N’ayez pas peur: je vous annonce une nouvelle qui sera pour tout le peuple le sujet d’une très grande joie.
11 Un *Sauveur vous est né aujourd’hui dans la ville de David; c’est lui le *Messie, le Seigneur.
12 Et voici à quoi vous le reconnaîtrez: vous trouverez un nouveau-né dans ses langes et couché dans une mangeoire.
13 Et tout à coup apparut, aux côtés de l’ange, une multitude d’anges de l’armée céleste qui chantaient les louanges de Dieu:
14 Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux!
Et paix sur la terre aux hommes qu’il aime.
15 Quand les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent l’un à l’autre:
—Allons donc jusqu’à Bethléhem pour voir ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.
16 Ils se dépêchèrent donc d’y aller et trouvèrent Marie et Joseph avec le nouveau-né couché dans une mangeoire.
17 Quand ils le virent, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de cet enfant.
18 Tous ceux qui entendirent le récit des bergers en furent très étonnés.
19 Marie, elle, conservait le souvenir de toutes ces paroles et y repensait souvent.
20 Les bergers s’en retournèrent, louant et glorifiant Dieu au sujet de tout ce qu’ils avaient vu et entendu: c’était bien ce que l’ange leur avait annoncé.
Jésus présenté au Temple
21 Lorsque, huit jours plus tard, arriva le moment de *circoncire l’enfant, on lui donna le nom de Jésus: c’était le nom que l’*ange avait indiqué avant qu’il ne fût conçu.
22 Puis, une fois passé le temps prescrit par la *Loi de *Moïse pour leur *purification, les parents de Jésus l’emmenèrent à *Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur.
23 En effet, il est écrit dans la Loi du Seigneur:
Tout garçon premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur .
24 Ils venaient aussi offrir le sacrifice requis par la Loi du Seigneur: une paire de tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons.
25 Il y avait alors, à Jérusalem, un homme appelé Siméon. C’était un homme droit et pieux; il vivait dans l’attente du salut d’*Israël, et le Saint-Esprit reposait sur lui.
26 L’Esprit Saint lui avait révélé qu’il ne mourrait pas avant d’avoir vu le *Messie, l’Envoyé du Seigneur.
27 Poussé par l’Esprit, il vint au *Temple. Quand les parents de Jésus apportèrent le petit enfant pour accomplir les rites qu’ordonnait la Loi,
28 Siméon le prit dans ses bras et loua Dieu en disant:
29 Maintenant, Seigneur,
| tu laisses ton serviteur
s’en aller en paix:
| tu as tenu ta promesse;
30 car mes yeux ont vu
| le *Sauveur qui vient de toi,
31 et que tu as suscité
| en faveur de tous les peuples:
32 il est la lumière
| pour éclairer les nations ,
il sera la gloire
| d’*Israël ton peuple.
33 Le père et la mère de Jésus étaient émerveillés de ce qu’il disait de lui.
34 Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère:
—Sache-le: cet enfant est destiné à être, pour beaucoup en Israël, une occasion de chute ou de relèvement. Il sera un signe qui suscitera la contradiction:
35 ainsi seront dévoilées les pensées cachées de bien des gens. Quant à toi, tu auras le cœur comme transpercé par une épée.
36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était très âgée. Dans sa jeunesse, elle avait été mariée pendant sept ans,
37 puis elle était devenue veuve et avait vécu seule jusqu’à quatre-vingt-quatre ans. Elle ne quittait jamais le Temple où elle servait Dieu, nuit et jour, par le jeûne et la prière.
38 Elle arriva, elle aussi, au même moment; elle louait Dieu et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient que Dieu délivre *Jérusalem.
39 Après avoir accompli tout ce que la Loi du Seigneur ordonnait, Marie et Joseph retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur village.
40 Le petit enfant grandissait et se développait. Il était plein de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu reposait sur lui.
Jésus dans le Temple à douze ans
41 Les parents de Jésus se rendaient chaque année à *Jérusalem pour la fête de la *Pâque.
42 Quand Jésus eut douze ans, ils y montèrent selon la coutume de la fête.
43 Une fois la fête terminée, ils prirent le chemin du retour, mais Jésus, leur fils, resta à Jérusalem et ses parents ne s’en aperçurent pas.
44 Ils supposaient, en effet, qu’il se trouvait avec leurs compagnons de voyage et firent ainsi une journée de marche. Ils se mirent alors à le chercher parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.
45 Mais ils ne le trouvèrent pas. Aussi retournèrent-ils à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
46 Trois jours plus tard, ils le retrouvèrent dans le *Temple, assis au milieu des maîtres; il les écoutait et leur posait des questions.
47 Tous ceux qui l’entendaient s’émerveillaient de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
48 Ses parents furent très étonnés de le voir là, et sa mère lui dit:
—Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela? Tu sais, ton père et moi, nous étions très inquiets et nous t’avons cherché partout.
49 —Pourquoi m’avez-vous cherché? leur répondit Jésus. Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois m’occuper des affaires de mon Père?
50 Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu’il leur disait.
51 Il repartit donc avec eux et retourna à Nazareth. Et il leur était obéissant. Sa mère gardait précieusement dans son cœur le souvenir de tout ce qui s’était passé.
52 Jésus grandissait et progressait en sagesse, et il se rendait toujours plus agréable à Dieu et aux hommes.
