Matthew 17

1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart:2 and he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.3 And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking with him.4 And Peter answered, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.5 While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.7 And Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, and be not afraid.8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, save Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen from the dead.10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?11 And he answered and said, Elijah indeed cometh, and shall restore all things:12 but I say unto you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but did unto him whatsoever they would. Even so shall the Son of man also suffer of them.13 Then understood the disciples that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling to him, saying,15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is epileptic, and suffereth grievously; for oft-times he falleth into the fire, and off-times into the water.16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him hither to me.18 And Jesus rebuked him; and the demon went out of him: and the boy was cured from that hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast it out?20 And he saith unto them, Because of your little faith: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.21 But this kind goeth not out save by prayer and fasting.

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men;23 and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised up. And they were exceeding sorry.

24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received the half-shekel came to Peter, and said, Doth not your teacher pay the half-shekel?25 He saith, Yea. And when he came into the house, Jesus spake first to him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth, from whom do they receive toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?26 And when he said, From strangers, Jesus said unto him, Therefore the sons are free.27 But, lest we cause them to stumble, go thou to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a shekel: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Matthieu 17

La révélation du royaume

(Mc 9.2-9; Lc 9.28-36)

1 Six jours plus tard, Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, *Jacques et Jean son frère, et les emmena sur une haute montagne, à l’écart.

2 Il fut transfiguré devant eux: son visage se mit à resplendir comme le soleil; ses vêtements prirent une blancheur éclatante, aussi éblouissante que la lumière.

3 Et voici que *Moïse et Elie leur apparurent: ils s’entretenaient avec Jésus.

4 Pierre s’adressa à Jésus et lui dit:
—Seigneur, il est bon que nous soyons ici. Si tu es d’accord, je vais dresser ici trois tentes, une pour toi, une pour Moïse et une pour Elie...

5 Pendant qu’il parlait ainsi, une nuée lumineuse les enveloppa, et une voix en sortit qui disait:
—Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, celui qui fait toute ma joie. Ecoutez-le!

6 En entendant cette voix, les disciples furent remplis de terreur et tombèrent le visage contre terre.

7 Mais Jésus s’approcha et posa la main sur eux en disant:
—Relevez-vous et n’ayez pas peur.

8 Alors ils levèrent les yeux et ne virent plus que Jésus seul.

9 Pendant qu’ils descendaient de la montagne, Jésus leur donna cet ordre:
—Ne racontez à personne ce que vous venez de voir avant que le *Fils de l’homme ne soit ressuscité des morts.

(Mc 9.10-13)

10 Les disciples lui demandèrent alors:
—Pourquoi donc les *spécialistes de la Loi disent-ils qu’Elie doit venir en premier lieu?

11 Il leur répondit:
—Effectivement, Elie doit venir remettre toutes choses en ordre.

12 Or, je vous le déclare: Elie est déjà venu, mais ils ne l’ont pas reconnu. Au contraire, ils l’ont traité comme ils ont voulu. Et c’est le même traitement que va subir de leur part le Fils de l’homme.

13 Les disciples comprirent alors qu’il parlait de Jean-Baptiste.

La guérison d’un enfant possédé

(Mc 9.14-29; Lc 9.37-43)

14 Quand ils furent revenus auprès de la foule, un homme s’approcha de Jésus, se jeta à genoux devant lui et le supplia:

15 —Seigneur, aie pitié de mon fils: il est épileptique et il souffre beaucoup: il lui arrive souvent de tomber dans le feu ou dans l’eau.

16 Je l’ai bien amené à tes disciples, mais ils n’ont pas réussi à le guérir.

17 Jésus s’exclama alors:
—Vous êtes un peuple incrédule et infidèle à Dieu! Jusqu’à quand devrai-je encore rester avec vous? Jusqu’à quand devrai-je encore vous supporter? Amenez-moi l’enfant ici.

18 Jésus commanda avec sévérité au démon de sortir et, immédiatement, celui-ci sortit de l’enfant, qui fut guéri à l’heure même.

19 Alors, les disciples prirent Jésus à part et le questionnèrent:
—Pourquoi n’avons-nous pas réussi, nous, à chasser ce démon?

20 —Parce que vous n’avez que peu de foi, leur répondit-il. Vraiment, je vous l’assure, si vous aviez de la foi, même si elle n’était pas plus grosse qu’une graine de moutarde, vous pourriez commander à cette montagne: Déplace-toi d’ici jusque là-bas, et elle le ferait. Rien ne vous serait impossible.

La nouvelle annonce de la mort et de la résurrection de Jésus

(Mc 9.30-32; Lc 9.43-45)

22 Un jour qu’ils parcouraient tous ensemble la *Galilée, Jésus leur dit:
—Le *Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes.

23 Ils le feront mourir, mais, le troisième jour, il ressuscitera.
Les disciples furent extrêmement affligés par ces paroles.

L’impôt du Temple

24 Ils se rendirent à *Capernaüm. Là, les agents chargés de percevoir l’impôt pour le *Temple vinrent trouver Pierre et lui demandèrent:
—Est-ce que votre Maître ne paie pas l’impôt du Temple?

25 —Mais si, répondit-il, il le paie.
Quand Pierre fut entré dans la maison, Jésus, prenant les devants, lui demanda:
—Qu’en penses-tu, *Simon? Qui est-ce qui paie les taxes et les impôts aux rois de la terre? Les fils ou les étrangers?

26 —Les étrangers, répondit Pierre.
—Donc, reprit Jésus, les fils n’ont rien à payer.

27 Toutefois, ne jetons pas ces gens dans le trouble. Descends donc jusqu’au lac, lance ta ligne à l’eau, attrape le premier poisson qui mordra, et ouvre-lui la bouche: tu y trouveras une pièce d’argent. Prends-la et donne-la aux agents en paiement de l’impôt pour nous deux.
