Matthew 18
1 In that hour came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?2 And he called to him a little child, and set him in the midst of them,3 and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me:6 But whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea.
7 Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion cometh!8 And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.9 And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.10 See that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.11 For the Son of man came to save that which was lost.12 How think ye? if any man have a hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and go unto the mountains, and seek that which goeth astray?13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth over it more than over the ninety and nine which have not gone astray.14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
15 And if thy brother sin against thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.16 But if he hear thee not, take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established.17 And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican.18 Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and what things soever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.19 Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father who is in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
21 Then came Peter and said to him, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? until seven times?22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven.23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, who would make a reckoning with his servants.24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, that owed him ten thousand talents.25 But forasmuch as he had not wherewith to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.26 The servant therefore fell down and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.27 And the lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.28 But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred shillings: and he laid hold on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay what thou owest.29 So his fellow-servant fell down and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee.30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay that which was due.31 So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were exceeding sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.32 Then his lord called him unto him, and saith to him, Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou besoughtest me:33 shouldest not thou also have had mercy on thy fellow-servant, even as I had mercy on thee?34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due.35 So shall also my heavenly Father do unto you, if ye forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.

L’accueil des «petits»
(Mc 9.33-37; Lc 9.46-48)
1 A ce moment-là, les *disciples s’approchèrent de Jésus et lui demandèrent:
—Qui donc est le plus grand dans le *royaume des cieux?
2 Alors Jésus appela un petit enfant, le plaça au milieu d’eux,
3 et dit:
—Vraiment, je vous l’assure: si vous ne changez pas d’attitude et ne devenez pas comme de petits enfants, vous n’entrerez pas dans le royaume des cieux.
4 C’est pourquoi le plus grand dans le royaume des cieux est celui qui s’abaisse lui-même comme cet enfant,
5 et celui qui accueille, en mon nom, un enfant comme celui-ci, m’accueille moi-même.
(Mc 9.42-48; Lc 17.1-2)
6 —Si quelqu’un devait faire tomber dans le péché l’un de ces petits qui croient en moi, il vaudrait mieux qu’on lui attache au cou une de ces pierres de meule que font tourner les ânes, et qu’on le précipite au fond du lac.
7 Quel malheur pour le monde qu’il y ait tant d’occasions de tomber dans le péché! Il est inévitable qu’il y en ait, mais malheur à celui qui crée de telles occasions.
8 Si ta main ou ton pied te font tomber dans le péché, coupe-les, et jette-les au loin. Car il vaut mieux pour toi entrer dans la vie avec une seule main ou un seul pied que de garder tes deux mains ou tes deux pieds et d’être jeté dans le feu éternel.
9 Si ton œil te fait tomber dans le péché, arrache-le et jette-le au loin, car il vaut mieux pour toi entrer dans la vie avec un seul œil, que de conserver tes deux yeux et d’être jeté dans le feu de l’enfer.
(Lc 15.1-7)
10 —Faites attention! Ne méprisez pas un seul de ces petits; je vous l’assure: leurs *anges dans le ciel se tiennent constamment en présence de mon Père céleste.
12 Qu’en pensez-vous? Si un homme a cent brebis, et que l’une d’elles s’égare, ne laissera-t-il pas les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres dans la montagne, pour aller à la recherche de celle qui s’est égarée?
13 Et s’il réussit à la retrouver, vraiment, je vous l’assure: cette brebis lui causera plus de joie que les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres qui ne s’étaient pas égarées.
14 Il en est de même pour votre Père céleste: il ne veut pas qu’un seul de ces petits se perde.
La démarche du pardon
15 —Si ton frère s’est rendu coupable [à ton égard], va le trouver, et convaincs-le de sa faute: mais que cela se passe en tête-à-tête. S’il t’écoute, tu auras gagné ton frère.
16 S’il ne t’écoute pas, reviens le voir en prenant avec toi une ou deux autres personnes, pour que tout ce qui sera dit soit appuyé sur les déclarations de deux ou de trois témoins .
17 S’il refuse de les écouter, dis-le à l’Eglise. S’il refuse aussi d’écouter l’Eglise, mets-le sur le même plan que les païens et les *collecteurs d’impôts.
18 Vraiment, je vous l’assure: tous ceux que vous exclurez sur la terre auront été exclus aux yeux de Dieu et tous ceux que vous accueillerez sur la terre auront été accueillis aux yeux de Dieu.
19 J’ajoute que si deux d’entre vous se mettent d’accord ici-bas au sujet d’un problème pour l’exposer à mon Père céleste, il les exaucera.
20 Car là où deux ou trois sont ensemble en mon nom, je suis présent au milieu d’eux.
21 Alors Pierre s’approcha de Jésus et lui demanda:
—Seigneur, si mon frère se rend coupable à mon égard, combien de fois devrai-je lui pardonner? Irai-je jusqu’à sept fois?
22 —Non, lui répondit Jésus, je ne te dis pas d’aller jusqu’à sept fois, mais jusqu’à soixante-dix fois sept fois.
23 En effet, il en est du *royaume des cieux comme d’un roi qui voulut régler ses comptes avec ses serviteurs.
24 Lorsqu’il commença à compter, on lui en présenta un qui lui devait soixante millions de pièces d’argent.
25 Comme ce serviteur n’avait pas de quoi rembourser ce qu’il devait, son maître donna ordre de le vendre comme esclave avec sa femme et ses enfants ainsi que tous ses biens pour rembourser sa dette.
26 Le serviteur se jeta alors aux pieds du roi et, se prosternant devant lui, supplia:
«Sois patient envers moi, accorde-moi un délai et je te rembourserai tout.»
27 Pris de pitié pour lui, son maître le renvoya libre, après lui avoir remis toute sa dette.
28 A peine sorti, ce serviteur rencontra un de ses compagnons de service qui lui devait cent pièces d’argent. Il le saisit à la gorge en criant:
«Paie-moi ce que tu me dois!»
29 Son compagnon se jeta à ses pieds et le supplia:
«Sois patient envers moi, lui dit-il, accorde-moi un délai et je te rembourserai.»
30 Mais l’autre ne voulut rien entendre. Bien plus: il alla le faire jeter en prison en attendant qu’il ait payé tout ce qu’il lui devait.
31 D’autres compagnons de service, témoins de ce qui s’était passé, en furent profondément attristés et allèrent rapporter toute l’affaire à leur maître.
32 Alors celui-ci fit convoquer le serviteur qui avait agi de la sorte:
«Tu es vraiment odieux! lui dit-il. Tout ce que tu me devais, toi mon serviteur, je te l’avais remis parce que tu m’en avais supplié.
33 Ne devais-tu pas, toi aussi, avoir pitié de ton compagnon, comme j’ai eu pitié de toi?»
34 Et, dans sa colère, son maître le livra aux bourreaux jusqu’à ce qu’il ait remboursé toute sa dette.
35 Voilà comment mon Père céleste vous traitera, vous aussi, si chacun de vous ne pardonne pas du fond du cœur à son frère.
