Matthew 25
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.2 And five of them were foolish, and five were wise.3 For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them:4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.5 Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.6 But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him.7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.9 But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.10 And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut.11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.13 Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.
14 For it is as when a man, going into another country, called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his several ability; and he went on his journey.16 Straightway he that received the five talents went and traded with them, and made other five talents.17 In like manner he also that received the two gained other two.18 But he that received the one went away and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.19 Now after a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and maketh a reckoning with them.20 And he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents.21 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.22 And he also that received the two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: lo, I have gained other two talents.23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.24 And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering where thou didst not scatter;25 and I was afraid, and went away and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, thou hast thine own.26 But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter;27 thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back mine own with interest.28 Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents.29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken away.30 And cast ye out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
31 But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory:32 and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats;33 and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:35 for I was hungry, and ye gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in;36 naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me.37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or athirst, and gave thee drink?38 And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?39 And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least, ye did it unto me.41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels:42 for I was hungry, and ye did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink;43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.44 Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me.46 And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

La parabole des dix jeunes filles
1 —Ce jour-là, il en sera du *royaume des cieux comme de dix jeunes filles qui prirent leurs lampes et s’en allèrent à la rencontre du marié.
2 Cinq d’entre elles étaient insensées, les cinq autres étaient avisées:
3 les jeunes filles insensées prirent leurs lampes sans penser à emporter de réserve d’huile,
4 mais celles qui étaient avisées prirent, avec leurs lampes, des flacons contenant de l’huile.
5 Comme le marié se faisait attendre, elles s’assoupirent toutes et finirent par céder au sommeil.
6 A minuit, un cri retentit:
«Voici l’époux! Allez à sa rencontre!»
7 Toutes les jeunes filles se levèrent et préparèrent leurs lampes.
8 Alors les jeunes filles insensées s’adressèrent à celles qui étaient avisées:
«Donnez-nous de votre huile, car nos lampes sont en train de s’éteindre.»
9 Mais celles-ci leur répondirent:
«Non! Il n’y en aurait jamais assez pour nous et pour vous. Courez plutôt vous en acheter chez le marchand.»
10 Elles partirent en chercher. Pendant ce temps, le marié arriva: celles qui étaient prêtes entrèrent avec lui dans la salle de noces, et l’on ferma la porte.
11 Plus tard, les autres jeunes filles arrivèrent à leur tour; mais elles eurent beau crier:
«Seigneur, Seigneur, ouvre-nous!»
12 Il leur répondit:
«Vraiment, je vous l’assure: je ne sais pas qui vous êtes.»
13 C’est pourquoi, ajouta Jésus, tenez-vous en éveil, car vous ne savez ni le jour, ni l’heure de ma venue.
La parabole de l’argent à faire fructifier
(Lc 19.12-27)
14 —Il en sera comme d’un homme qui partit pour un voyage: il convoqua ses serviteurs et leur confia l’administration de ses biens.
15 Il remit à l’un cinq lingots, à un autre deux, et à un troisième un seul, en tenant compte des capacités personnelles de chacun. Puis il s’en alla.
16 Celui qui avait reçu les cinq lingots se mit sans tarder à les faire fructifier, de sorte qu’il en gagna cinq autres.
17 Celui qui en avait reçu deux fit de même et en gagna deux autres.
18 Quant à celui qui n’en avait reçu qu’un, il s’en alla creuser un trou dans la terre pour y cacher l’argent de son maître.
19 Longtemps après, le maître de ces serviteurs revint et leur fit rendre compte de leur gérance.
20 Celui qui avait reçu les cinq lingots se présenta, apportant les cinq lingots supplémentaires qu’il avait gagnés.
«Maître, dit-il, tu m’avais remis cinq lingots, j’en ai gagné cinq autres. Les voici.»
21 «Très bien, lui dit son maître, tu es un bon serviteur, en qui l’on peut avoir confiance. Tu t’es montré fidèle en peu de choses. C’est pourquoi je t’en confierai de plus importantes. Viens partager la joie de ton maître!»
22 Celui qui avait reçu les deux lingots se présenta aussi et dit:
«Maître, tu m’avais remis deux lingots, j’en ai gagné deux autres. Les voici.»
23 «Très bien, lui dit son maître, tu es un bon serviteur, en qui l’on peut avoir confiance. Tu t’es montré fidèle en peu de choses. C’est pourquoi je t’en confierai de plus importantes. Viens partager la joie de ton maître!»
24 Enfin, celui qui n’avait reçu qu’un lingot vint à son tour et dit:
«Maître, je savais que tu es un homme dur: tu moissonnes là où tu n’as rien semé, tu récoltes où tu n’as pas répandu de semence.
25 Alors, j’ai pris peur et je suis allé cacher ton argent dans la terre. Voilà: prends ce qui t’appartient.»
26 Mais son maître lui répondit:
«Vaurien! Fainéant! Tu savais que je moissonne là où je n’ai rien semé et que je récolte là où je n’ai pas répandu de semence!
27 Eh bien, tu aurais dû placer mon argent chez les banquiers et, à mon retour, j’aurais récupéré le capital et les intérêts.
28 Qu’on lui retire donc le lingot et qu’on le donne à celui qui en a déjà dix.»
29 Car à celui qui a, on donnera encore, et il sera dans l’abondance. Mais à celui qui n’a pas, on ôtera même ce qu’il a.
30 Quant à ce vaurien, jetez-le dans les ténèbres du dehors, où il y aura des pleurs et d’amers regrets.
Le jugement dernier
31 —Quand le *Fils de l’homme viendra dans sa gloire, avec tous ses *anges, il prendra place sur son trône glorieux.
32 Tous les peuples de la terre seront rassemblés devant lui. Alors il les divisera en deux groupes — tout comme le berger fait le tri entre les brebis et les boucs.
33 Il placera les brebis à sa droite et les boucs à sa gauche.
34 Après quoi, le roi dira à ceux qui seront à sa droite:
«Venez, vous qui êtes bénis par mon Père: prenez possession du *royaume qu’il a préparé pour vous depuis la création du monde.
35 Car j’ai souffert de la faim, et vous m’avez donné à manger. J’ai eu soif, et vous m’avez donné à boire. J’étais un étranger, et vous m’avez accueilli chez vous.
36 J’étais nu, et vous m’avez donné des vêtements. J’étais malade, et vous m’avez soigné. J’étais en prison, et vous êtes venus à moi.»
37 Alors, les justes lui demanderont:
«Mais, Seigneur, quand t’avons-nous vu avoir faim, et t’avons-nous donné à manger? Ou avoir soif, et t’avons-nous donné à boire?
38 Ou étranger et t’avons-nous accueilli? Ou nu, et t’avons-nous vêtu?
39 Ou malade ou prisonnier, et sommes-nous venus te rendre visite?»
40 Et le roi leur répondra:
«Vraiment, je vous l’assure: chaque fois que vous avez fait cela au moindre de mes frères que voici, c’est à moi-même que vous l’avez fait.»
41 Puis il se tournera vers ceux qui seront à sa gauche:
«Retirez-vous loin de moi, vous que Dieu a maudits, et allez dans le feu éternel préparé pour le diable et ses anges.
42 Car j’ai souffert de la faim, et vous ne m’avez rien donné à manger. J’ai eu soif, et vous ne m’avez rien donné à boire.
43 J’étais un étranger, et vous ne m’avez pas accueilli chez vous. J’étais nu, et vous ne m’avez pas donné de vêtements. J’étais malade et en prison, et vous n’avez pas pris soin de moi.»
44 Alors, ils lui demanderont à leur tour:
«Mais, Seigneur, quand t’avons-nous vu souffrant de la faim ou de la soif; quand t’avons-nous vu étranger, nu, malade ou en prison, et avons-nous négligé de te rendre service?»
45 Alors il leur répondra:
«Vraiment, je vous l’assure: chaque fois que vous n’avez pas fait cela au moindre de ceux que voici, c’est à moi que vous avez manqué de le faire.»
46 Et ils s’en iront au châtiment éternel. Tandis que les justes entreront dans la vie éternelle.
