Romans 7
1 Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?2 For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.3 So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.6 But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:8 but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.9 And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;10 and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:11 for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.12 So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.13 Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.15 For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do.16 But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.17 So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.18 For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.19 For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.20 But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.21 I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:23 but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Le chrétien est libéré de la loi
1 tIgnorez-vous, mes frères – je parle à des gens qui connaissent la loi – que la loi exerce sa maîtrise sur l’être humain aussi longtemps qu’il vit ? 2 tAinsi, une femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari tant qu’il est vivant ; mais si son mari meurt, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à son mari.
3 Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle devient la femme d’un autre homme, on la dira adultère, mais si son mari meurt, elle est libérée de la loi : elle n’est donc pas adultère si elle devient la femme d’un autre homme.
4 tPar conséquent, mes frères, vous aussi vous avez été mis à mort pour la loi, au moyen du corps du Christ, pour être à un autre, celui qui s’est réveillé d’entre les morts, afin que nous portions du fruit pour Dieu. 5 tCar, lorsque nous étions sous l’empire de la chair, les passions des péchés, par la loi, étaient à l’œuvre dans notre corps tout entier et nous faisaient porter du fruit pour la mort.
6 tMais maintenant, nous sommes dégagés de la loi, car nous sommes morts à ce qui nous tenait captifs, de sorte que si nous sommes esclaves, ce n’est plus sous le régime ancien de la lettre, mais sous le régime nouveau de l’Esprit.Le rôle de la loi
7 tQue dirons-nous donc ? La loi est-elle péché ? Jamais de la vie ! Mais je n’ai connu le péché que par la loi. Ainsi, je n’aurais pas su ce qu’était le désir si la loi n’avait pas dit :Tu ne désireras pas. 8 tAlors le péché, profitant de l’occasion, a produit en moi, par le commandement, toutes sortes de désirs ; en effet, en dehors de la loi, le péché est mort. 9 tMoi, autrefois, en dehors de la loi, je vivais ; mais quand le commandement est venu, le péché a pris vie, 10 tet moi, je suis mort. Ainsi, le commandement qui mène à la vie s’est trouvé, pour moi, mener à la mort. 11 tCar le péché, profitant de l’occasion, m’a trompé par le commandement et, par lui, il m’a tué.
12 tCertes, donc, la loi est sainte ; le commandement est saint, juste et bon.
13 tEst-ce donc le bien qui est devenu pour moi la mort ? Jamais de la vie ! C’est le péché qui, pour se manifester comme tel, a produit en moi la mort par le bien, afin que, par le commandement, le péché apparaisse dans toute sa puissance de péché.Captif de la loi du péché
14 tNous savons, en effet, que la loi est spirituelle ; mais moi, je suis un être de chair, vendu au péché. 15 tCar ce que je produis, je ne le comprends pas. Ce que je veux, je ne le pratique pas, mais ce que je fais, c’est ce que je déteste. 16 tSi ce que je fais, c’est ce que je ne veux pas, je suis d’accord avec la loi pour dire qu’elle est bonne.
17 tMaintenant, ce n’est plus moi qui produis cela, c’est le péché qui habite en moi.
18 tJe le sais, rien de bon n’habite en moi, c’est-à-dire dans ma chair. Car il est à ma portée de vouloir, mais non pas de produire le bien. 19 tJe ne fais pas le bien que je veux, mais je pratique le mal que je ne veux pas. 20 tSi je fais ce que, moi, je ne veux pas, ce n’est plus moi qui le produis, c’est le péché qui habite en moi. 21 tJe trouve donc cette loi, pour moi qui veux faire le bien : ce qui est à ma portée, c’est le mal. 22 tCar, pour ce qui est de l’homme que je suis intérieurement, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu, 23 tmais je vois dans mon corps tout entier une autre loi qui lutte contre la loi de mon intelligence et qui me rend captif – captif de la loi du péché qui est dans tout mon corps. 24 tMisérable que je suis ! Qui me délivrera de ce corps de mort ?
25 tGrâce soit rendue à Dieu par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur !
Ainsi donc, moi, par mon intelligence, je suis esclave de la loi de Dieu, tandis que, par ma chair, je suis esclave de la loi du péché.
