A Bigger Reality
What strikes me about this healing is the contrast in perspectives between the people who were mourning the death of a child, and Jesus. The mourners were dealing with the facts: the girl was dead, not asleep, and it was incredibly sad. To them, Jesus' claim to the contrary was ridiculous. Some people even today are offended by those who claim healing is possible; it's as if they refuse to face the facts. Bad things happen and we just have to deal with it.
Jesus seems to be aware of the family's grief, which is why he interrupted his schedule to go and help. But he isn't the least bit worried because he seems to be aware of another reality, another world. And when he says, "Little girl, get up," he's speaking into that other world.
The truth is, both perspectives, of the mourners and Jesus, were accurate. The girl was dead in this world, but somehow still alive in the next. So the miracle was not just that Jesus healed the girl, but also that for a brief moment he opened the door to another world, a bigger reality. Later, through his death and resurrection, Jesus would permanently open that door to all who believe in him. That's the good news.
