Ecclesiastes 8

1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.2 I counsel thee, Keep the king’s command, and that in regard of the oath of God.3 Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.4 For the king’s word hath power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou?5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man’s heart discerneth time and judgment:6 for to every purpose there is a time and judgment; because the misery of man is great upon him:7 for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be?8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt.10 So I saw the wicked buried, and they came to the grave; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity.11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.12 Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his days, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before him:13 but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that shall abide with him in his labor all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes),17 then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however much a man labor to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea moreover, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

전도서 8

1 누가 지혜로운 사람과 같겠는가? 사물의 이치를 설명할 수 있는 자가 누구인 가? 지혜는 사람의 얼굴에 광채가 나게 하고 굳은 얼굴 표정을 바꾸어 놓는다.

왕에게 복종하라

2 하나님 앞에서 서약한 대로 왕의 명령에 순종하라.

3 1자기 직무를 벗어나려고 하지 말며 악한 일에 끼어들지 말아라. 왕은 자기가 하고 싶은 것을 마음대로 할 수가 있다.

4 왕의 말은 권위가 있다. 누가 감히 왕에게 무엇을 하느냐고 말할 수 있겠는가?

5 왕의 명령을 지키면 해를 입지 않을 것이다. 지혜로운 사람은 왕의 명령을 수행할 시기와 방법을 안다.

6 모든 일을 하는 데는 적절한 시기와 방법이 있으나 우리는 그것에 대해서 잘 모르고 있다.

7 앞으로 일어날 일을 아무도 모르는데 누가 장래 일을 말해 줄 수 있겠는가?

8 떠나는 영을 붙들 사람이 없고 죽는 날을 연장할 사람도 없으며 전시에는 제대도 없고 악이 악인을 구해 낼 수도 없다.

악한 사람과 의로운 사람

9 내가 이 세상의 모든 일을 잘 살펴보니 어떤 사람은 권력을 가지고 다른 사람을 지배하며 또 어떤 사람은 그 지배하에서 고통을 당한다.

10 악인은 죽어 무덤에 묻히고 그를 묻고 돌아오는 길에 사람들은 죽은 자의 악을 다 잊어버리며 죽은 자는 자기들이 범죄하던 바로 그 도시에서 칭찬을 받으니 이것도 헛된 것이다.

11 하나님이 죄인들을 즉시 벌하시지 않기 때문에 사람들의 마음이 악을 행하는 데 담대하다.

12 죄인이 백 번을 범죄하고도 여전히 살아 남을 수 있을는지 모르지만 내가 알기에는 하나님을 두려운 마음으로 섬기는 자가 분명히 잘될 것이다.

13 그러나 악인은 하나님을 두려워하지 않으므로 그는 잘되지 못하고 그들의 사는 날이 그림자와 같아서 곧 죽고 말 것이다.

14 세상에는 이해할 수 없는 일이 많이 있다. 의로운 사람이 악인의 벌을 받는 경우가 있고 악인이 의로운 사람의 상을 받는 경우도 있으니 이것도 헛된 것이다.

15 그래서 사람은 인생을 즐길 수 있어야 한다. 이 세상에서 먹고 마시며 즐거워하는 것보다 더 좋은 것은 없기 때문이다. 그러나 이런 즐거움은 이 세상에서 하나님이 주신 삶을 사는 동안 열심히 일하는 데서 찾아야 한다.

16 나는 지혜를 추구하며 세상에서 일어나는 일을 알려고 애쓰는 가운데 밤낮 자지 않고 일만 하는 자가 있음을 알았다.

17 그리고 하나님이 하시는 일을 살펴보니 세상에서 되어지는 일을 사람은 이해할 수가 없다. 아무리 애써서 찾는다고 해도 그 의미를 찾을 수가 없으며 지혜로운 자가 다 안다고 주장하여도 실제로 그것을 이해할 수가 없다.
