Ezekiel 18

1 The word of Jehovah came unto me again, saying,2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?3 As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,6 and hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbor’s wife, neither hath come near to a woman in her impurity,7 and hath not wronged any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath taken nought by robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;8 he that hath not given forth upon interest, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true justice between man and man,9 hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept mine ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord Jehovah.10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth any one of these things,11 and that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife,12 hath wronged the poor and needy, hath taken by robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,13 hath given forth upon interest, and hath taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins, which he hath done, and feareth, and doeth not such like;15 that hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbor’s wife,16 neither hath wronged any, hath not taken aught to pledge, neither hath taken by robbery, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;17 that hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed mine ordinances, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.19 Yet say ye, Wherefore doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? when the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.21 But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.22 None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? saith the Lord Jehovah; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he hath done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?26 When the righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth therein; in his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord Jehovah. Return ye, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Jehovah: wherefore turn yourselves, and live.

범죄하는 영혼만 죽는다

1 여호와께서 나에게 말씀하셨다.

2 “어째서 사람들이 이스라엘 땅에 대하여 ‘아버지가 신 포도를 먹었는데 아들의 이가 시다’는 속담을 쓰고 있는가?

3 살아 있는 나 여호와가 분명히 말하지만 너희가 이스라엘에서 다시는 이 속담을 쓰지 못할 것이다.

4 모든 생명은 다 나에게 속하였다. 아버지의 생명이 나에게 속한 것같이 아들의 생명도 나에게 속하였으니 범죄하는 사람만 죽을 것이다.

5 “만일 어떤 사람이 의로워서 공정하고 옳은 일을 행하며

6 산 위의 우상 신전에서 제물을 먹지 않고 이스라엘 우상에게 눈길을 돌리지 않으며 이웃의 아내를 더럽히거나 월경중에 있는 여인을 가까이하지 않으며

7 사람을 학대하지 않고 빚진 자에게서 잡은 전당물을 다시 돌려 주며 남의 것을 강제로 빼앗지 않고 굶주린 자에게 먹을 것을 주며 벗은 자에게 옷을 입힌다면,

8 또 그가 이자를 받지 않고 돈을 꾸어 주며 악한 일을 거절하고 사람과 사람 사이를 공정하게 판단하며

9 내 명령에 순종하고 내 법을 조심스럽게 지킨다면 그 사람이야말로 의로운 사람이다. 그는 분명히 살 것이다. 이것은 나 여호와의 말이다.

10 “그가 난폭한 아들을 낳았다고 한번 가정해 보자. 그 아들이 이 모든 선은 하나도 행하지 않고 사람을 죽이며

11 산 위의 우상 신전에서 제물을 먹고 이웃의 아내를 더럽히며

12 가난하고 불쌍한 사람을 학대하고 남의 것을 강제로 빼앗고 전당잡은 물건을 돌려 주지 않으며 우상에게 눈을 돌리고 더러운 일을 행하며

13 1돈을 빌려 주고 높은 이자를 받는다면 그가 과연 살겠느냐? 결코 살지 못할 것이다. 그가 이 모든 더러운 일을 행하였으므로 반드시 죽을 것이며 2그의 죽음에 대한 책임은 그에게 돌아갈 것이다.

14 “그러나 만일 이 아들이 또 아들을 낳았다고 가정해 보자. 그 아들이 자기 아버지가 범한 모든 죄를 보았으나 그런 죄를 범하지 않고

15 산 위의 우상 신전에서 제물을 먹지 않으며 이스라엘의 우상에게 눈을 돌리지도 않고 그 이웃의 아내를 더럽히지도 않으며

16 사람을 학대하거나 돈을 빌려 주고 전당물을 잡지 않으며 남의 것을 강제로 빼앗지 않고 굶주린 자에게 먹을 것을 주며 벗은 자에게 옷을 입히고

17 가난한 자를 도와주며 돈을 빌려 주고도 이자를 받지 않고 내 법을 지키며 내 명령에 순종한다면 그는 자기 아버지의 죄로 죽지 않고 분명히 살 것이다.

18 그러나 그의 아버지는 난폭하여 자기 동족의 것을 강탈하고 자기 백성에게 악을 행하였으므로 자기가 범한 그 죄로 죽고 말 것이다.

19 “그런데 너희는 아버지가 죄를 지었는데도 어째서 그 아들이 벌을 받지 않느냐고 묻고 있다. 그 아들은 공정하고 옳은 일을 행하며 나의 모든 법을 준수하였으므로 그는 분명히 살 것이다.

20 죽어야 할 사람은 바로 범죄하는 그 사람이다. 아들이 아버지의 죄 때문에 형벌을 받지 않을 것이며 아버지가 아들의 죄 때문에 형벌을 받지도 않을 것이다. 이와 같이 의로운 자의 의에 대한 보상도 자기에게 돌아가고 악인의 악에 대한 형벌도 자기에게 돌아갈 것이다.

21 “그러나 만일 악인이 그가 범한 모든 죄에서 돌이키고 내 법을 지키며 의로운 일을 행하면 그가 살고 분명히 죽지 않을 것이다.

22 그가 범한 죄는 하나도 기억되지 않을 것이며 그가 행한 의로운 일로 그는 살게 될 것이다.

23 내가 어찌 악인이 죽는 것을 기뻐하겠느냐? 그가 죄악의 길에서 떠나 살면 내가 기뻐하지 않겠느냐?

24 “그러나 만일 의로운 자가 그의 의로운 길에서 떠나 범죄하고 악인이 행하는 모든 더러운 일을 행하면 살겠느냐? 그가 행한 의로운 일은 하나도 기억되지 않을 것이며 그의 신실하지 못함과 그가 범한 죄 때문에 그는 죽게 될 것이다.

25 “그러나 너희는 내가 행하는 일이 옳지 못하다고 말하고 있다. 이스라엘 백성아, 들어라. 내가 하는 일이 옳지 못하냐? 오히려 너희가 하는 일이 옳지 못한 것이 아니냐?

26 만일 의로운 자가 그 의를 떠나 죄를 범하고 죽으면 그는 자기가 범한 죄 때문에 죽는 것이며

27 만일 악한 자가 그 악에서 떠나 법을 지키고 옳은 일을 행하면 그는 자기 생명을 구원하게 될 것이다.

28 그는 자기가 행한 일을 깨닫고 그 죄에서 돌이켰으므로 분명히 살고 죽지 않을 것이다.

29 그런데 너희 이스라엘 백성들은 ‘여호와가 공정하지 못하다’ 하고 말한다. 이스라엘 백성들아, 어째서 내가 공정하지 않느냐? 오히려 너희가 공정하지 못한 것이 아니냐?

30 “나 주 여호와가 말한다. 이스라엘 백성들아, 너희가 행한 대로 내가 너희 각 사람을 심판하겠다. 너희는 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 모든 죄에서 떠나라. 그러면 너희가 죄 때문에 멸망하지 않을 것이다.

31 너희는 지금까지 범한 모든 죄를 버리고 마음과 심령을 새롭게 하라. 이스라엘 백성들아, 너희가 어째서 죽으려고 하느냐?

32 나 여호와가 말한다. 나는 그 누구도 죽는 것을 원하지 않는다. 그러므로 너희는 회개하고 살아라.”
