Ezra 9

1 Now when these things were done, the princes drew near unto me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the peoples of the lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.4 Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of them of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening oblation.5 And at the evening oblation I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe rent; and I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God;6 and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.7 Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.8 And now for a little moment grace hath been showed from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.9 For we are bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended lovingkindness unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the ruins thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.10 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,11 which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness:12 now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such a remnant,14 shall we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?15 O Jehovah, the God of Israel, thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before thee because of this.

이방 민족들과의 결혼

1 그 후에 이스라엘 백성의 일부 지도자들이 나에게 백성들과 제사장들과 레 위 사람들이 이웃의 이방 민족들과 구별된 생활을 하지 않고 가나안 사람, 헷 사람, 브리스 사람, 여부스 사람, 암몬 사람, 모압 사람, 이집트 사람, 아모리 사람들의 풍습을 본받아 더러운 짓을 하며

2 이들 이방 민족들과 서로 결혼하여 거룩한 민족의 순수성을 더럽혔으며 이 일에 앞장선 자들이 지도자들과 관리들이라고 일러 주었다.

3 나는 이 말을 듣고 슬퍼서 옷을 찢고 머리털과 수염을 뜯으며 정신 없이 주저앉아 있었다.

4 그때 하나님의 말씀을 두려워하는 자들이 이 백성의 죄 때문에 내 곁으로 모여들었다. 나는 비탄에 잠겨 그대로 앉아 있다가

5 저녁 제사를 드릴 때에 슬픔을 머금고 일어나 찢어진 속옷과 겉옷을 입은 채 무릎을 꿇고 나의 하나님 여호와를 향해 두 손을 들어

6 이렇게 기도하였다. “나의 하나님이시여, 내가 너무 부끄러워 주 앞에 머리를 들 수가 없습니다. 우리 죄가 우리 머리보다 높이 쌓여 하늘에 닿았습니다.

7 우리 조상 때부터 지금까지 우리는 줄곧 죄만 지어 왔습니다. 우리의 죄 때문에 우리는 물론 우리 왕들과 제사장들이 외국 왕들의 손에 죽고 약탈을 당했으며 포로로 잡혀가 오늘날까지도 수모를 당하고 있습니다.

8 이제 잠시 동안이나마 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리에게 은혜를 베푸셔서 우리 소수의 사람들을 종살이하던 곳에서 돌아오게 하여 이 거룩한 곳에 안전하게 살도록 하시고 우리에게 새로운 삶을 주셨습니다.

9 우리는 종이었으나 주는 우리를 그대로 내버려 두지 않으시고 페르시아 황제의 은혜를 입게 하시며 우리가 다시 힘을 얻어 폐허가 된 주의 성전을 재건하게 하시고 이 곳 유다와 예루살렘에서 우리를 안전하게 살도록 하셨습니다.

10 “그러나 하나님이시여, 주께서 이런 은혜를 베푸신 후에도 우리가 주를 저버리고 주의 법을 어겼으니 이제 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까?

11 주께서는 전에 주의 종 예언자들을 통하여 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘너희가 들어가서 소유할 땅은 더러운 땅이다. 그 곳에 사는 이방 민족들이 그 땅을 온통 더럽고 추한 것으로 가득 채웠다.

12 그러므로 그들과 서로 결혼하지 말고 그들의 평안과 번영을 추구하지 말아라. 그러면 너희가 막강해져서 번영을 누리며 그 땅을 너희 후손에게 유산으로 길이 물려 주게 될 것이다.’

13 “지금까지 우리가 당한 모든 일은 우리의 악한 행위와 큰 죄의 결과였습니다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 우리가 지은 죄에 비해 우리의 형벌을 가볍게 하셔서 이와 같이 우리를 살아 남게 하셨습니다.

14 그런데도 우리가 다시 주의 명령을 어기고 이 악한 백성들과 결혼하였으니 어찌 주께서 우리에게 분노하시지 않겠습니까? 분명히 주는 우리를 전멸시키고 한 사람도 살아 남지 못하게 하실 것입니다.

15 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여, 주는 의로우신 분이십니다. 우리가 오늘날 이처럼 살아 남긴 했습니다만 우리가 주께 범죄하였으므로 감히 주 앞에 설 수가 없습니다.”
