Isaiah 30

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith Jehovah, that take counsel, but not of me; and that make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin,2 that set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.4 For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors are come to Hanes.5 They shall all be ashamed because of a people that cannot profit them, that are not a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.6 The burden of the beasts of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.7 For Egypt helpeth in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I called her Rahab that sitteth still.8 Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever.9 For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of Jehovah;10 that say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits,11 get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely thereon;13 therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly in an instant.14 And he shall break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there shall not be found among the pieces thereof a sherd wherewith to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.15 For thus said the Lord Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. And ye would not:16 but ye said, No, for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.17 One thousand shall flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.18 And therefore will Jehovah wait, that he may be gracious unto you; and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for Jehovah is a God of justice; blessed are all they that wait for him.19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; thou shalt weep no more; he will surely be gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear, he will answer thee.20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be hidden anymore, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers;21 and thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it; when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.22 And ye shall defile the overlaying of thy graven images of silver, and the plating of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as an unclean thing; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.23 And he will give the rain for thy seed, wherewith thou shalt sow the ground; and bread of the increase of the ground, and it shall be fat and plenteous. In that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures;24 the oxen likewise and the young asses that till the ground shall eat savory provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.25 And there shall be upon every lofty mountain, and upon every high hill, brooks and streams of waters, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that Jehovah bindeth up the hurt of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.27 Behold, the name of Jehovah cometh from far, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire;28 and his breath is as an overflowing stream, that reacheth even unto the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction: and a bridle that causeth to err shall be in the jaws of the peoples.29 Ye shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come unto the mountain of Jehovah, to the Rock of Israel.30 And Jehovah will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, and tempest, and hailstones.31 For through the voice of Jehovah shall the Assyrian be dismayed; with his rod will he smite him.32 And every stroke of the appointed staff, which Jehovah shall lay upon him, shall be with the sound of tabrets and harps; and in battles with the brandishing of his arm will he fight with them.33 For a Topheth is prepared of old; yea, for the king it is made ready; he hath made it deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of Jehovah, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

이집트와 맺은 쓸모 없는 조약

1 주님께서 말씀하신다. “거역하는 자식들아, 너희에게 화가 닥칠 것이다. 너희가 계획을 추진하지만, 그것들은 나에게서 나온 것이 아니며, 동맹을 맺지만, 나의 뜻을 따라 한 것이 아니다. 죄에 죄를 더할 뿐이다.

2 너희가 나에게 물어 보지도 않고, 이집트로 내려가서, 바로의 보호를 받아 피신하려 하고, 이집트의 그늘에 숨으려 하는구나.”

3  바로의 보호가 오히려 너희에게 수치가 되고, 이집트의 그늘이 오히려 너희에게 치욕이 될 것이다.

4  유다의 고관들이 소안으로 가고, 유다의 사신들이 하네스로 가지만,

5 쓸모 없는 백성에게 오히려 수치만 당할 것이다. 너희는 이집트에게서 아무런 도움도 유익도 얻지 못하고, 오히려 수치와 치욕만 얻을 것이다.

6 이것은 네겝의 들짐승들에게 내리신 경고의 말씀이다. 유다의 사절단이 나귀 등에 선물을 싣고, 낙타 등에 보물을 싣고, 거친 광야를 지나서, 이집트로 간다. 암사자와 수사자가 울부짖는 땅, 독사와 날아다니는 불뱀이 날뛰는 땅, 위험하고 곤고한 땅을 지나서, 아무런 도움도 주지 못할 백성에게 선물을 주려고 간다.

7 “이집트가 너희를 도울 수 있다는 생각은 헛된 망상일 뿐이다. 이집트는 ‘맥 못쓰는 라합’일 뿐이다.”

복종하지 않는 백성

8 이제 너는 가서, 유다 백성이 어떤 백성인지를 백성 앞에 있는 서판에 새기고, 책에 기록하여서, 오고오는 날에 영원한 증거가 되게 하여라.

9 이 백성은 반역하는 백성이요, 거짓말을 하는 자손으로서, 주님의 율법은 전혀 들으려 하지 않는 자손이다.

10 선견자들에게 이르기를 “미리 앞일을 내다보지 말아라!” 하며, 예언자들에게 이르기를 “우리에게 사실을 예언하지 말아라! 우리를 격려하는 말이나 하여라! 가상현실을 예언하여라!

11 그 길에서 떠나거라! 그 길에서 벗어나거라. ‘이스라엘의 거룩하신 분’ 이야기는 우리 앞에서 제발 그쳐라” 하고 말한다.

12 그러므로 ‘이스라엘의 거룩하신 분’께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “너희가 이 말을 업신여기고, 억압과 사악한 일을 옳은 일로 여겨서, 그것에 의지하였으니,

13 이 죄로, 너희가 붕괴될 성벽처럼 될 것이다. 높은 성벽에 금이 가고, 배가, 불룩 튀어나왔으니, 순식간에 갑자기 무너져 내릴 것이다.

14 토기장이의 항아리가 깨져서 산산조각이 나듯이, 너희가 그렇게 무너져 내릴 것이다. 아궁이에서 불을 담아 낼 조각 하나 남지 않듯이, 웅덩이에서 물을 퍼낼 조각 하나 남지 않듯이, 너희가 사라질 것이다.”

15 주, 이스라엘의 거룩하신 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “너희는 회개하고 마음을 편안하게 하여야 구원을 받을 것이며, 잠잠하고 신뢰하여야 힘을 얻을 것이다. 그러나 너희는 그렇게 하기를 바라지 않았다.”

16 오히려 너희는 이렇게 말하였다. ‘그렇게 하지 않겠습니다. 우리는 차라리 말을 타고 도망 가겠습니다.’ 너희가 이렇게 말하였으니, 정말로, 너희가 도망 갈 것이다. 너희는 또 이렇게 말하였다. ‘우리는 차라리 날랜 말을 타고 달아나겠습니다.’ 너희가 이렇게 말하였으니, 너희를 뒤쫓는 자들이 더 날랜 말을 타고 쫓아올 것이다.

17 적군 한 명을 보고서도 너희가 천 명씩이나 도망 가니, 적군 다섯 명이 나타나면, 너희는 모두 도망 갈 것이다. 너희가 도망 가고 나면, 산꼭대기에는 너희의 깃대만 남고, 언덕 위에서는 깃발만이 외롭게 펄럭일 것이다.

18 그러나 주님께서는 너희에게 은혜를 베푸시려고 기다리시며, 너희를 불쌍히 여기시려고 일어나신다. 참으로 주님께서는 공의의 하나님이시다. 주님을 기다리는 모든 사람은 복되다.

하나님께서 백성에게 복을 주실 것이다

19  예루살렘에 사는 시온 백성아, 이제 너희는 울 일이 없을 것이다. 네가 살려 달라고 부르짖을 때에, 주님께서 틀림없이 은혜를 베푸실 것이니, 들으시는 대로 너에게 응답하실 것이다.

20 비록 주님께서 너희에게 환난의 빵과 고난의 물을 주셔도, 다시는 너의 스승들을 숨기지 않으실 것이니, 네가 너의 스승들을 직접 뵐 것이다.

21 네가 오른쪽이나 왼쪽으로 치우치려 하면, 너의 뒤에서 ‘이것이 바른길이니, 이 길로 가거라’ 하는 소리가 너의 귀에 들릴 것이다.

22 그리고 너는, 네가 조각하여 은을 입힌 우상들과, 네가 부어 만들어 금을 입힌 우상들을, 부정하게 여겨, 마치 불결한 물건을 내던지듯 던지면서 ‘눈 앞에서 없어져라’ 하고 소리 칠 것이다.

23 네가 땅에 씨앗을 뿌려 놓으면, 주님께서 비를 내리실 것이니, 그 땅에서 실하고 기름진 곡식이 날 것이다. 그 때에 너의 가축은 넓게 트인 목장에서 풀을 뜯을 것이다.

24 밭 가는 소와 나귀도 아무것이나 먹지 않고, 키와 부삽으로 까부르고 간을 맞춘 사료를 먹을 것이다.

25 큰 살육이 일어나고 성의 탑들이 무너지는 날에, 높은 산과 솟은 언덕마다 개울과 시냇물이 흐를 것이다.

26 주님께서 백성의 상처를 싸매어 주시고, 매 맞아 생긴 그들의 상처를 고치시는 날에, 달빛은 마치 햇빛처럼 밝아지고, 햇빛은 일곱 배나 밝아져서 마치 일곱 날을 한데 모아 놓은 것 같이 밝아질 것이다.

하나님께서 앗시리아를 벌하실 것이다

27 주님의 이름 곧 그 권세와 영광이 먼 곳에서도 보인다. 그의 진노가 불처럼 타오르며, 노기가 치솟는 연기처럼 하늘을 찌른다. 그의 입술은 분노로 가득하고, 혀는 마치 태워 버리는 불과 같다.

28 그의 숨은 범람하는 강물 곧 목에까지 차는 물과 같다. 그가 파멸하는 키로 민족들을 까부르시며, 미혹되게 하는 재갈을 백성들의 입에 물리신다.

29 그러나 너희는 거룩한 절기를 지키는 밤처럼, 노래를 부르며, 피리를 불며, 주님의 산으로, 이스라엘의 반석이신 분에게로 나아가는 사람과 같이, 마음이 기쁠 것이다.

30 주님께서 맹렬한 진노와, 태워 버리는 불과, 폭풍과 폭우와, 돌덩이 같은 우박을 내리셔서, 주님의 장엄한 음성을 듣게 하시며, 내리치시는 팔을 보게 하실 것이다.

31 주님께서 몽둥이로 치실 것이니, 앗시리아는 주님의 목소리에 넋을 잃을 것이다.

32 주님께서 그들을 치시려고 예비하신 그 몽둥이를 그들에게 휘두르실 때에, 주님의 백성은 소구 소리와 수금 소리로 장단을 맞출 것이니, 주님께서 친히 앗시리아 사람들과 싸우실 것이다.

33 이미 오래 전에 t‘불타는 곳’을 준비하셨다. 바로 t앗시리아 왕을 태워 죽일 곳을 마련하셨다. 그 불구덩이가 깊고 넓으며, 불과 땔감이 넉넉하다. 이제 주님께서 내쉬는 숨이 마치 유황의 강물처럼 그것을 사르고 말 것이다.
