Isaiah 57

1 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart; and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.2 He entereth into peace; they rest in their beds, each one that walketh in his uprightness.3 But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the harlot.4 Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and put out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,5 ye that inflame yourselves among the oaks, under every green tree; that slay the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?6 Among the smooth stones of the valley is thy portion; they, they are thy lot; even to them hast thou poured a drink-offering, thou hast offered an oblation. Shall I be appeased for these things?7 Upon a high and lofty mountain hast thou set thy bed; thither also wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.8 And behind the doors and the posts hast thou set up thy memorial: for thou hast uncovered thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them: thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.9 And thou wentest to the king with oil, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thine ambassadors far off, and didst debase thyself even unto Sheol.10 Thou wast wearied with the length of thy way; yet saidst thou not, It is in vain: thou didst find a quickening of thy strength; therefore thou wast not faint.11 And of whom hast thou been afraid and in fear, that thou liest, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of long time, and thou fearest me not?12 I will declare thy righteousness; and as for thy works, they shall not profit thee.13 When thou criest, let them that thou hast gathered deliver thee; but the wind shall take them, a breath shall carry them all away: but he that taketh refuge in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.14 And he will say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people.15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made.17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.19 I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith Jehovah; and I will heal him.20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

우상숭배를 규탄하시다

1 의인이 t망해도 그것을 마음에 두는 자가 없고, t경건한 사람이 이 세상을 떠나도 그 뜻을 깨닫는 자가 없다. 의인이 세상을 떠나는 것은, 실상은 재앙을 피하여 가는 것이다.

2 그는 평화로운 곳으로 들어가는 것이다. 바른길을 걷는 사람은 자기 침상 위에 편히 누울 것이다.

3 너희 점쟁이의 자식들아, 간통하는 자와 창녀의 씨들아, 이리 가까이 오너라.

4 너희가 누구를 조롱하는 거냐? 너희가 누구에게 입을 크게 벌리고 혀를 내미느냐? 너희는 거역하는 자의 자식, 거짓말쟁이의 종자가 아니냐?

5 너희는 t상수리나무 사이에서, 모든 푸른 나무 아래에서, 정욕에 불타 바람을 피우며, 골짜기 가운데서, 갈라진 바위 밑에서, 자식들을 죽여 제물로 바쳤다.

6 너는 골짜기의 매끈한 돌들을 가져다가, 그것들을 신으로 떠받들었다. 네가 그것들에게 술을 부어 바치고, 또 곡식제물을 바쳤다. “내가 너희의 그런 꼴을 보았으니, 내가 어찌 기뻐하겠느냐?”

7 너는 또 저 우뚝 솟은 높은 산 위에 올라가서, 거기에다 자리를 깔았다. 거기에서 제사를 지냈다.

8 “너의 집 문과 문설주 뒤에는 우상을 세워 놓았다. 너는 나를 버리고 떠나서, 옷을 다 벗고, 네가 좋아하는 자들과 함께 알몸으로 침상에 올라가 자리를 넓게 폈다. 너는 그들과 함께 자려고 화대를 지불하고, 거기에서 정욕을 불태웠다.

9 너는 또 t몰렉에게 가려고, 몸에 기름을 바르고 향수를 듬뿍 뿌렸다. 섬길 신들을 찾느라고 먼 나라에 t사신들을 보내고, t 스올에까지 사절을 내려 보냈다.

10 신들을 찾아 나선 여행길이 고되어서 지쳤으면서도, 너는 ‘헛수고’라고 말하지 않는구나. 오히려 너는 우상들이 너에게 새 힘을 주어서 지치지 않았다고 생각하는구나.

11 네가 그처럼 무서워하는 신들이 누구냐? 도대체 그 신들이 얼마나 무서우면, 나를 속이면서까지, 나를 까마득히 잊어가면서까지, 그 신들에게 매달리느냐? 내가 오랫동안 침묵하고 있었다고, 네가 나를 경외하지 않는 것이냐?

12 너는 네가 하는 일이 다 옳다고 생각하겠지만, 네가 한 일을 내가 다 폭로할 것이니, 너의 우상들이 너를 돕지 못할 것이다.

13 너의 우상들에게 살려 달라고 부르짖어 보아라. 오히려 바람이 우상들을 날려 버릴 것이며, 입김이 그것들을 쓸어 버릴 것이다. 그러나 나에게로 피하여 오는 사람은, 땅을 차지하여 거기에서 살고, 나의 거룩한 성전에서 나를 예배할 것이다.”

도우시고 고치시겠다고 하신 약속

14 “내가 말한다. 땅을 돋우고 돋우어서 길을 내어라. 나의 백성이 걷는 길에 거치는 것이 없게 하여라.”

15 지극히 높으신 분, t영원히 살아 계시며, 거룩한 이름을 가지신 분께서, 이렇게 말씀하신다. “내가 비록 높고 거룩한 곳에 있으나, 겸손한 사람과도 함께 있고, 잘못을 뉘우치고 회개하는 사람과도 함께 있다. 겸손한 사람과 함께 있으면서 그들에게 용기를 북돋우어 주고, 회개하는 사람과 같이 있으면서 그들의 상한 마음을 아물게 하여 준다.

16 나는 사람들과 끝없이 다투지만은 않는다. 한없이 분을 품지도 않는다. 사람에게 생명을 준 것이 나인데, 내가 그들과 끝없이 다투고 한없이 분을 품고 있으면, 사람이 어찌 견디겠느냐?

17 사람의 탐욕스러운 죄 때문에 내가 노하여 그들을 쳤고, 내가 노하여 나의 얼굴을 가렸다. 그래도 그들은 끝내 나를 거역하고 제 마음에 내키는 길로 가버렸다.

18 사람의 소행이 어떠한지, 내가 보아서 다 알고 있다. 그러나 나는 그들을 고쳐 주겠다. 그들을 인도하여 주며, 도와주겠다. 슬퍼하는 사람들을 위로하여 주겠다.

19 이제 내가 말로 평화를 창조한다. 먼 곳에 있는 사람과 가까운 곳에 있는 사람에게 평화, 평화가 있어라.” 주님께서 약속하신다. “내가 너를 고쳐 주마.”

20 그러나 악인들은 요동하는 바다와 같아서 고요히 쉬지 못하니, 성난 바다는 진흙과 더러운 것을 솟아 올릴 뿐이다.

21 나의 하나님께서 말씀하신다. “악인들에게는 평화가 없다.”
