Isaiah 7

1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind.3 Then said Jehovah unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller’s field;4 and say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither let thy heart be faint, because of these two tails of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have purposed evil against thee, saying,6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set up a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeel;7 thus saith the Lord Jehovah, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken in pieces, so that is shall not be a people:9 and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.10 And Jehovah spake again unto Ahaz, saying,11 Ask thee a sign of Jehovah thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt Jehovah.13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David: Is it a small thing for you to weary men, that ye will weary my God also?14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.15 Butter and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kings thou abhorrest shall be forsaken.17 Jehovah will bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah-even the king of Assyria.18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the clefts of the rocks, and upon all thorn-hedges, and upon all pastures.20 In that day will the Lord shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard.21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall keep alive a young cow, and two sheep;22 and it shall come to pass, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the midst of the land.23 And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, shall be for briers and thorns.24 With arrows and with bow shall one come thither, because all the land shall be briers and thorns.25 And all the hills that were digged with the mattock, thou shalt not come thither for fear of briers and thorns; but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of sheep.

아하스 왕에게 내린 경고

1  웃시야의 손자요 요담의 아들인 유다 왕 아하스가 나라를 다스릴 때에, 시리아 왕 르신이 르말리야의 아들 이스라엘 왕 베가와 함께 예루살렘을 치려고 올라왔지만, 도성을 정복할 수 없었다. 2  시리아 군대가 t에브라임에 주둔하고 있다는 말이 다윗 왕실에 전해 지자, 왕의 마음과 백성의 마음이 마치 거센 바람 앞에서 요동하는 수풀처럼 흔들렸다. 3 그 때에 주님께서 이사야에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 너의 아들 t스알야숩을 데리고 가서, 아하스를 만나거라. 그가 ‘세탁자의 밭’으로 가는 길, 윗못 물 빼는 길 끝에 서 있을 것이다. 4 그를 만나서, 그에게, 정신을 바짝 차리고, 침착하게 행동하라고 일러라. 시리아의 르신과 르말리야의 아들이 크게 분노한다 하여도, 타다가 만 두 부지깽이에서 나오는 연기에 지나지 않으니, 두려워하거나 겁내지 말라고 일러라. 5 시리아 군대가 아하스에게 맞서, 에브라임 백성과 그들의 왕 르말리야의 아들과 함께 악한 계략을 꾸미면서 6 ‘올라가 유다를 쳐서 겁을 주고, 우리들에게 유리하도록 유다를 흩어지게 하며, 그 곳에다가 다브엘의 아들을 왕으로 세워 놓자’고 한다. 7 주 하나님께서 말씀하신다. 이 계략은 성공하지 못한다. 절대로 그렇게 되지 못한다.

8  시리아의 머리는 다마스쿠스이며, 다마스쿠스의 머리는 르신이기 때문이다. 에브라임은 육십오 년 안에 망하고, 뿔뿔이 흩어져서, 다시는 한 민족이 되지 못할 것이다.

9  에브라임의 머리는 사마리아이고, 사마리아의 머리는 고작해야 르말리야의 아들이다. 너희가 믿음 안에 굳게 서지 못한다면, 너희는 절대로 굳게 서지 못한다!”

임마누엘의 징조

10 주님께서 아하스에게 다시 말씀하셨다. 11 “너는 주 너의 하나님에게 징조를 보여 달라고 부탁하여라. 저 깊은 곳 스올에 있는 것이든, 저 위 높은 곳에 있는 것이든, 무엇이든지 보여 달라고 하여라.” 12  아하스가 대답하였다. “아닙니다. 저는 징조를 구하지도 않고, 주님을 시험하지도 않겠습니다.” 13 그 때에 이사야가 말하였다. “다윗 왕실은 들으십시오. 다윗 왕실은 백성의 인내를 시험한 것만으로는 부족하여, 이제 하나님의 인내까지 시험해야 하겠습니까? 14 그러므로 주님께서 친히 다윗 왕실에 한 징조를 주실 것입니다. 보십시오, t처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이며, 그가 그의 이름을 t임마누엘이라고 할 것입니다. 15 그 아이가 잘못된 것을 거절하고 옳은 것을 선택할 나이가 될 t때에, 그 아이는 버터와 꿀을 먹을 것입니다. 16 그러나 그 아이가 잘못된 것을 거절하고 옳은 것을 선택할 나이가 되기 전에, 임금님께서 미워하시는 저 두 왕의 땅이 황무지가 될 것입니다. 17 에브라임과 유다가 갈라진 때로부터 이제까지, 이 백성이 겪어 본 적이 없는 재난을, 주님께서는 임금님과 임금님의 백성과 임금님의 아버지 집안에 내리실 것입니다. 주님께서 앗시리아의 왕을 끌어들이실 것입니다. 18 그 날에 주님께서 휘파람을 불어 이집트의 나일 강 끝에 있는 파리 떼를 부르시며, 앗시리아 땅에 있는 벌 떼를 부르실 것입니다. 19 그러면 그것들이 모두 몰려와서, 거친 골짜기와 바위틈, 모든 가시덤불과 모든 풀밭에 내려앉을 것입니다. 20 그 날에 주님께서 유프라테스 강 건너 저편에서 빌려 온 면도칼 곧 앗시리아 왕을 시켜서 당신들의 머리털과 발털을 미실 것이요, 또한 수염도 밀어 버리실 것입니다. 21 그 날에는, 비록 한 농부가 어린 암소 한 마리와 양 두 마리밖에 기르지 못해도, 22 그것들이 내는 젖이 넉넉하여, 버터를 만들어 먹을 수 있을 것입니다. 그 땅에 남아 있는 사람들이 모두 버터와 꿀을 먹을 수 있을 것입니다. 23 그 날에는, 은 천 냥 값이 되는 천 그루의 포도나무가 있던 곳마다, 찔레나무와 가시나무로 덮일 것입니다. 24 온 땅이 찔레나무와 가시나무로 덮이므로, 사람들은 화살과 활을 가지고 그리로 사냥을 갈 것입니다. 25 괭이로 일구던 모든 산에도 찔레나무와 가시나무가 덮이므로, 당신은 두려워서 그리로 가지도 못할 것이며, 다만 소나 놓아 기르며, 양이나 밟고 다니는 곳이 되고 말 것입니다.”
