Isaiah 8

1 And Jehovah said unto me, Take thee a great tablet, and write upon it with the pen of a man, For Maher-shalal-hash-baz;2 and I will take unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said Jehovah unto me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and, My mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.5 And Jehovah spake unto me yet again, saying,6 Forasmuch as this people have refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;7 now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the River, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory: and it shall come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks;8 and it shall sweep onward into Judah; it shall overflow and pass through; it shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.9 Make an uproar, O ye peoples, and be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces.10 Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.11 For Jehovah spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,12 Say ye not, A conspiracy, concerning all whereof this people shall say, A conspiracy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be in dread thereof.13 Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.15 And many shall stumble thereon, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.16 Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.17 And I will wait for Jehovah, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.18 Behold, I and the children whom Jehovah hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Jehovah of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion.19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits and unto the wizards, that chirp and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? on behalf of the living should they seek unto the dead?20 To the law and to the testimony! if they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.21 And they shall pass through it, sore distressed and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and turn their faces upward:22 and they shall look unto the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and into thick darkness they shall be driven away.

징조가 된 이사야의 아들

1 주님께서 나에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 큰 서판을 가지고 와서, 그 위에 두루 쓰는 글자로 t‘마헬살랄하스바스’라고 써라. 2 내가 진실한 증인 우리야 제사장과 여베레기야의 아들 스가랴를 불러 증언하게 하겠다.” 3 그런 다음에 나는 t예언자인 나의 아내를 가까이하였다. 그러자 그 예언자가 임신하여 아들을 낳았는데, 그 때에 주님께서 나에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “그의 이름을 ‘마헬살랄하스바스’라고 하여라. 4 이 아이가 ‘아빠, 엄마’라고 부를 줄 알기도 전에, 앗시리아 왕이 다마스쿠스에서 빼앗은 재물과 사마리아에서 빼앗은 전리품을 가져 갈 것이다.”

앗시리아 왕의 침략

6 “이 백성이 고요히 흐르는 실로아 물은 싫어하고, 르신과 르말리야의 아들을 좋아하니,

7 나 주가, 저 세차게 넘쳐 흐르는 유프라테스 강물 곧 앗시리아 왕과 그의 모든 위력을, 이 백성 위에 뒤덮이게 하겠다. 그 때에 그 물이 온 샛강을 뒤덮고 둑마다 넘쳐서,

8  유다로 밀려들고, 소용돌이치면서 흘러, 유다를 휩쓸고, 유다의 목에까지 찰 것이다.” 임마누엘! (하나님께서 우리와 함께 계신다!) 하나님께서 날개를 펴셔서 이 땅을 보호하신다.

9 너희 민족들아! 어디, t전쟁의 함성을 질러 보아라. 패망하고 말 것이다. 먼 나라에서 온 민족들아, 귀를 기울여라. 싸울 준비를 하여라. 그러나 마침내 패망하고 말 것이다. 싸울 준비를 하여라. 그러나 마침내 패망하고 말 것이다.

10 전략을 세워라. 그러나 마침내 실패하고 말 것이다. 계획을 말해 보아라. 마침내 이루지 못할 것이다. t하나님께서 우리와 함께 계시기 때문이다.

주님께서 예언자에게 경고하시다

11 주님께서 그 힘센 손으로 나를 붙잡고, 이 백성의 길을 따라가지 말라고, 나에게 이렇게 경고의 말씀을 하셨다. 12 “너희는 이 백성이 t모의하는 음모에 가담하지 말아라. 그들이 두려워하는 것을 두려워하지 말며, 무서워하지도 말아라.

13 너희는 만군의 주 그분만을 거룩하다고 하여라. 그분만이 너희가 두려워할 분이시고, 그분만이 너희가 무서워할 분이시다.

14 그는 성소도 되시지만, 이스라엘의 두 집안에게는 거치는 돌도 되시고 걸리는 바위도 되시며, 예루살렘 주민에게는 함정과 올가미도 되신다.

15 많은 사람이 거기에 걸려서 넘어지고 다치며, 덫에 걸리듯이 걸리고 사로잡힐 것이다.”

이사야와 그의 제자들

16 나는 이 증언 문서를 밀봉하고, 이 가르침을 봉인해서, 나의 제자들이 읽지 못하게 하겠다. 17 주님께서 비록 야곱의 집에서 얼굴을 돌리셔도, 나는 주님을 기다리겠다. 나는 주님을 의지하겠다. 18 내가 여기에 있고, 주님께서 나에게 주신 이 아이들이 여기에 있다. 나와 아이들은, 시온 산에 계시는 만군의 주님께서 이스라엘에게 보여 주시는, 살아 있는 징조와 예표다. 19-20 그런데도, 사람들은 너희에게 말할 것이다. “속살거리며 중얼거리는 신접한 자와 무당에게 물어 보아라. 어느 백성이든지 자기들의 신들에게 묻는 것은 당연하다. 산 자의 문제에 교훈과 지시를 받으려면, 죽은 자에게 물어 보아야 한다.” 이렇게 말하는 자들은 결코 동트는 것을 못 볼 것이다! 21 그들은 괴로움과 굶주림으로 이 땅을 헤맬 것이다. 굶주리고 분노한 나머지, 위를 쳐다보며 왕과 신들을 저주할 것이다. 22 그런 다음에 땅을 내려다 보겠지만, 보이는 것은 다만 고통과 흑암, 무서운 절망뿐일 것이니, 마침내 그들은 짙은 흑암 속에 떨어져서, 빠져 나오지 못할 것이다.
