Jeremiah 29

1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,2 (after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, and the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem,)3 by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,) saying,4 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem unto Babylon:5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply ye there, and be not diminished.7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.8 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken ye to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah.10 For thus saith Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.12 And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.14 And I will be found of you, saith Jehovah, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places wither I have driven you, saith Jehovah; and I will bring you again unto the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.15 Because ye have said, Jehovah hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;16 thus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;17 thus saith Jehovah of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.18 And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them;19 because they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith Jehovah.20 Hear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.21 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie unto you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;22 and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;23 because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.24 And concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt speak, saying,25 Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thine own name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,26 Jehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.27 Now therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who maketh himself a prophet to you,28 forasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?29 And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.30 Then came the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in a lie;32 therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do unto my people, saith Jehovah, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah.

포로에게 보낸 예레미야의 편지

1 이것은 예언자 예레미야가 예루살렘에서 보낸 편지로서, 포로로 잡혀 간 장로들 가운데서 살아 남은 사람들을 비롯하여, 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에서 바빌로니아로 잡아간 제사장들과 예언자들과 온 백성에게 보낸 것이다. 2 이 때는 t여고냐 왕과 그의 어머니와 내시들과 유다와 예루살렘의 고관들과 기술자들과 대장장이들이 예루살렘에서 떠난 뒤이다. 3 이 편지는, 유다 왕 시드기야가 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살에게 보낸 사반의 아들 엘리사와 힐기야의 아들 그마랴를 시켜 바빌로니아로 전달하였다. 다음은 편지의 내용이다. 4 “나 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 내가 예루살렘에서 바빌로니아로 잡혀 가게 한 모든 포로에게 말한다. 5 너희는 그 곳에 집을 짓고 정착하여라. 과수원도 만들고 그 열매도 따 먹어라. 6 너희는 장가를 들어서 아들딸을 낳고, 너희 아들들도 장가를 보내고 너희 딸들도 시집을 보내어, 그들도 아들딸을 낳도록 하여라. 너희가 그 곳에서 번성하여, 줄어들지 않게 하여라. 7 또 너희는, 내가 사로잡혀 가게 한 그 성읍이 평안을 누리도록 노력하고, 그 성읍이 번영하도록 나 주에게 기도하여라. 그 성읍이 평안해야, 너희도 평안할 것이기 때문이다. 8 나 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 분명히 말한다. 너희는 지금 너희 가운데 있는 예언자들에게 속지 말고, 점쟁이들에게도 속지 말고, 꿈쟁이들의 꿈 이야기도 곧이듣지 말아라. 9 그들은 단지 나의 이름을 팔아서 너희에게 거짓 예언을 하고 있을 뿐이다. 그들은 내가 보낸 자들이 아니다. 나 주의 말이다. 10 나 주가 분명히 말한다. 너희가 바빌로니아에서 칠십 년을 다 채우고 나면, 내가 너희를 돌아보아, 너희를 이 곳으로 다시 데리고 오기로 한 나의 은혜로운 약속을 너희에게 그대로 이루어 주겠다. 11 너희를 두고 계획하고 있는 일들은 오직 나만이 알고 있다. 내가 너희를 두고 계획하고 있는 일들은 재앙이 아니라 번영이다. 너희에게 미래에 대한 희망을 주려는 것이다. 나 주의 말이다. 12 너희가 나를 부르고, 나에게 와서 기도하면, 내가 너희의 호소를 들어주겠다. 13 너희가 나를 찾으면, 나를 만날 것이다. 너희가 온전한 마음으로 나를 찾기만 하면, 14 내가 너희를 만나 주겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 내가 너희를 포로생활에서 돌아오게 하겠다. 내가 너희를 쫓아 보냈던 세상의 모든 나라, 모든 지역에서 너희를 모아 오겠다. 내가 너희를 포로로 보냈으나, 나는 t너희를 그 곳에서 너희의 고향으로 다시 데려오겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 15 너희는 ‘주님께서는 바빌로니아에서도 우리에게 예언자들을 보내 주시지 않았느냐?’ 하고 말한다. 16 그렇기 때문에 나 주가 지금 다윗의 보좌에 앉아 있는 왕에게, 그리고 지금 이 도성에 살고 있는 모든 백성, 곧 너희와 함께 포로로 잡혀 가지 않은 너희의 친척에게 말한다. 17 나 만군의 주가 말한다. 내가 그들에게 전쟁과 기근과 염병을 보내어, 그들을 아무도 먹을 수 없는 썩은 무화과처럼 만들겠다. 18 내가 칼과 기근과 염병으로 그들을 뒤쫓아가서 칠 것이니, 세상의 모든 나라들이 이것을 보고 놀라게 하고, 그들은 나에게 쫓겨가서 사는 모든 민족들 사이에서, 저주와 놀라움과 조롱과 조소거리가 되게 하겠다. 19 나 주의 말이다. 이것은, 내가 그들에게 나의 종 예언자들을 서둘러서 보내어 나의 말을 전하였으나, 그들이 나의 말을 듣지 않아서 내리는 벌이다. 그들이 듣지 않았기 때문이다. 나 주의 말이다. 20 그러므로 내가 예루살렘에서 바빌로니아로 쫓아 보낸 너희 포로들아, 이제 너희는 모두 나 주의 말을 들어라. 21 나 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 지금 나의 이름을 팔아 너희에게 거짓 예언을 하고 있는 골라야의 아들 아합과, 마아세야의 아들 시드기야를 두고 말한다. 내가 그들을 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 넘겨 주어, 너희가 보는 앞에서 그 왕이 그들을 죽이도록 하겠다. 22 그리고 그들 때문에, 바빌로니아에 사는 모든 유다의 포로 사이에서는 ‘너도 주님께 형벌을 받아, 시드기야와 아합처럼 바빌로니아 왕에게 화형이나 당해라’ 하는 저주가 생길 것이다. 23 이것은, 그들이 이스라엘 사람으로서 절대로 해서는 안 될 망측한 일을 하였기 때문이다. 그들은 자기 이웃의 아내들과 간음하였고, 나의 이름을 팔아, 내가 시키지도 않은 거짓말을 하였다. 이것을 내가 안다. 내가 바로 그 증인이다. 나 주의 말이다.”
