Jeremiah 31

1 At that time, saith Jehovah, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.2 Thus saith Jehovah, The people that were left of the sword found favor in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.3 Jehovah appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.4 Again will I build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: again shalt thou be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.5 Again shalt thou plant vineyards upon the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit thereof.6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the hills of Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto Jehovah our God.7 For thus saith Jehovah, Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout for the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O Jehovah, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall they return hither.9 They shall come with weeping; and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way wherein they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.10 Hear the word of Jehovah, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off; and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as shepherd doth his flock.11 For Jehovah hath ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.12 And they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow unto the goodness of Jehovah, to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil, and to the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith Jehovah.15 Thus saith Jehovah: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuseth to be comforted for her children, because they are not.16 Thus saith Jehovah: Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work shall be rewarded, saith Jehovah; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.17 And there is hope for thy latter end, saith Jehovah; and thy children shall come again to their own border.18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art Jehovah my God.19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.20 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearneth for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith Jehovah.21 Set thee up waymarks, make thee guide-posts; set thy heart toward the highway, even the way by which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.22 How long wilt thou go hither and thither, O thou backsliding daughter? for Jehovah hath created a new thing in the earth: a woman shall encompass a man.23 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Yet again shall they use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity: Jehovah bless thee, O habitation of righteousness, O mountain of holiness.24 And Judah and all the cities thereof shall dwell therein together, the husbandmen, and they that go about with flocks.25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and every sorrowful soul have I replenished.26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.27 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.28 And it shall come to pass that, like as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, saith Jehovah.29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.31 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah.33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:34 and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.35 Thus saith Jehovah, who giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, who stirreth up the sea, so that the waves thereof roar; Jehovah of hosts is his name:36 If these ordinances depart from before me, saith Jehovah, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.37 Thus saith Jehovah: If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith Jehovah.38 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that the city shall be built to Jehovah from the tower of Hananel unto the gate of the corner.39 And the measuring line shall go out further straight onward unto the hill Gareb, and shall turn about unto Goah.40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto Jehovah; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

북왕국 포로민의 귀환

1 “나 주의 말이다. 때가 오면, 나는 이스라엘 모든 지파의 하나님이 되고, 그들은 나의 백성이 될 것이다.

2 나 주가 말한다. 전쟁에서 죽지 않고 살아 남은 백성이, 광야에서 은혜를 입었다. 이스라엘이 자기의 안식처를 찾아 나섰을 때에,

3 나 주가 t먼 곳으로부터 와서 이스라엘에게 나타나 주었다. 나는 영원한 사랑으로 너를 사랑하였고, 한결같은 사랑을 너에게 베푼다.

4 처녀 이스라엘아, 내가 너를 일으켜 세우겠으니, 네가 다시 일어날 것이다. 너는 다시 너의 소구를 들고, 흥에 겨워 춤을 추며 나오게 될 것이다.

5 내가 너로 다시 사마리아 산마다 포도원을 만들 수 있게 하겠다. 포도를 심은 사람이 그 열매를 따 먹게 하겠다.

6  에브라임 산에서 파수꾼들이 ‘어서 시온으로 올라가 주 우리의 하나님 앞으로 나아가자!’ 하고 외치는 날이 반드시 올 것이다.”

7 “참으로 나 주가 말한다. 너희는 기쁨으로 야곱에게 환호하고 세계 만민의 머리가 된 이스라엘에게 환성을 올려라. ‘주님, 주님의 백성을 구원해 주십시오. 이스라엘의 남은 자를 구원해 주십시오.’ 이렇게 선포하고 찬양하여라.

8 내가 그들을 북녘 땅에서 데리고 오겠으며, 땅의 맨 끝에서 모아 오겠다. 그들 가운데는 눈 먼 사람과 다리를 저는 사람도 있고, 임신한 여인과 해산한 여인도 있을 것이다. 그들이 큰 무리를 이루어 이 곳으로 돌아올 것이다.

9 그들이 눈물을 흘리면서 돌아올 것이며, 그들이 간구할 때에 내가 그들을 인도하겠다. 그들이 넘어지지 않게 평탄한 길로 인도하여, 물이 많은 시냇가로 가게 하겠다. 나는 이스라엘의 아버지이고, 에브라임은 나의 맏아들이기 때문이다.”

10 “뭇 민족들아, 너희는 나 주의 말을 듣고, 먼 해안지역 사람들에게 이 말을 전하여라. ‘이스라엘을 흩으신 분께서 그들을 다시 모으시고, 목자가 자기 양 떼를 지키듯이 그들을 지켜 주신다.’

11 그렇다. 나 주가 야곱을 속량하여 주고, 야곱보다 더 강한 자의 손에서 그를 구원해 냈다.

12 그들은 돌아와서 시온 산 꼭대기에서 찬송을 부르고, 주의 좋은 선물, 곧 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름과 양 새끼와 송아지들을 받고 기뻐할 것이며, 그들의 마음은 물 댄 동산과 같아서, 다시는 기력을 잃지 않을 것이다.

13 그 때에는 처녀가 춤을 추며 기뻐하고, 젊은이와 노인들이 함께 즐거워할 것이다. 내가 그들의 슬픔을 기쁨으로 바꾸어 놓고, 그들을 위로하여 주겠다. 그들이 근심에서 벗어나서 기뻐할 것이다.

14 그 때에는 내가 기름진 것으로 제사장들의 마음을 흡족하게 할 것이며, 내 좋은 선물로 내 백성을 만족하게 하겠다. 나 주의 말이다.”

라헬의 탄식과 하나님의 위로

15 “나 주가 말한다. 라마에서 슬픈 소리가 들린다. 비통하게 울부짖는 소리가 들린다. 라헬이 자식을 잃고 울고 있다. 자식들이 없어졌으니, 위로를 받기조차 거절하는구나.

16 나 주가 말한다. 이제는 울음소리도 그치고, 네 눈에서 눈물도 거두어라. 네가 수고한 보람이 있어서, 네 아들딸들이 적국에서 돌아온다. 나 주의 말이다.

17 너의 앞날에는 희망이 있다. 네 아들딸들이 고향 땅으로 돌아온다. 나 주의 말이다.”

18 “에브라임이 탄식하는 소리를 내가 분명히 들었다. ‘주님, 우리는 길들지 않은 짐승 같았습니다. 그러나 주님께서 우리를 가르쳐 주셨고, 순종하게 하셨습니다. 우리가 돌아갈 수 있게 이끌어 주십시오. 이제 우리가 주 우리의 하나님께 돌아갈 준비가 되었습니다.

19 주님을 떠난 다음에 곧 뉘우쳤습니다. 잘못을 깨달은 다음에 가슴을 치며 뉘우쳤습니다. 그리고 저의 젊은 시절의 허물 때문에 저는 수치와 수모를 겪어야 했습니다.’

20  에브라임은 나의 귀한 아들이다. 내가 가장 사랑하는 자식이다. 그를 책망할 때마다 더욱 생각나서, 측은한 마음이 들어 불쌍히 여기지 않을 수 없었다. 나 주의 말이다.”

21 “너는 길에 푯말을 세우고, 길표를 만들어 세워라. 네가 전에 지나갔던 길과 대로를 잘 생각하여 보아라. 처녀 이스라엘아, 돌아오너라. 너희가 살던 이 성읍들로 돌아오너라.

22 너 방종한 딸아, 네가 언제까지 방황하겠느냐? 주님께서 이 땅에 새 것을 창조하셨으니, 그것은 곧 여자가 남자를 t안는 것이다.”

유다의 회복에 대한 약속

23 “나 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. t내가 포로로 잡혀 간 사람들을 돌아오게 할 때에, 사람들은 유다 땅과 유다의 성읍에서 이런 말을 다시 하게 될 것이다. ‘너 정의의 보금자리, 거룩한 산이여, 주님의 복을 받아라.’

24 그 때에는 유다와 그 모든 성읍에 사람들이 이주하여 살고, 농부들도 농촌에 모여 살고, 유랑하는 목자들도 가축 떼를 몰고 다닐 것이다. 25 나는 지친 사람들에게 새 힘을 주고, 굶주려서 허약해진 사람들을 배불리 먹이겠다. 26 그 때에 백성은 ‘잠에서 깨어나 눈을 떠 보니, 나에게 아주 단잠이었다’ 하고 말할 것이다.” 27 “그 때가 오면, 내가 이스라엘 집과 유다 집에 사람의 씨와 짐승의 씨를 뿌리겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 28 내가 전에 그들을 뽑아내고 부수고 무너뜨리고 멸망시키고 재앙에 빠뜨리려고, 감시를 늦추지 않았으나, 이제는 내가 그들을 세우고 심으려고, 감시를 늦추지 않겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 29 그 때가 오면, 사람들이 더 이상 ‘아버지가 신포도를 먹었기 때문에, 자식들의 이가 시게 되었다’는 말을 하지 않을 것이다. 30 오직 각자가 자기의 죄악 때문에 죽을 것이다. 신포도를 먹는 그 사람의 이만 실 것이다.”

새 언약

35 낮에는 해를 주셔서 빛을 밝혀 주시고, 밤에는 달과 별들이 빛을 밝히도록 정하여 놓으시고, 바다를 뒤흔들어 파도가 소리 치게 하시는 분, 그 이름은 만군의 주님이시다. 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다.

36 “이 정해진 질서가 내 앞에서 사라지지 않는 한, 이스라엘 자손도 내 앞에서 언제까지나 한 민족으로 남아 있을 것이다. 나 주의 말이다.

37 나 주가 말한다. 누가 위로 하늘을 다 재고, 아래로 땅의 기초를 다 측정할 수 있다면, 나도 이스라엘의 모든 자손이 한 온갖 일들 때문에 그들을 버릴 수 있을 것이다. 나 주의 말이다.

38 그 때가 오면, 이 도성이 나 주의 것으로 재건될 것이다. 나 주의 말이다. 하나넬 망대에서부터 모퉁이 성문에 이르기까지 이어지고, 39 거기서 측량줄이 가렙 언덕에 이르기까지 곧게 앞으로 나갔다가 고아 쪽으로 돌아가고, 40 그 다음에 시체와 잿더미로 가득 찬 골짜기 전역과, 기드론 시냇가에서 동쪽의 밭들의 모퉁이에 이르는 모든 평지가 나 주의 거룩한 땅이 되고, 절대로 다시는 뽑히거나 허물어지는 일이 없을 것이다.”
