Jeremiah 34

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying:2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire:3 and thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.4 Yet hear the word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah: thus saith Jehovah concerning thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword;5 thou shalt die in peace; and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they make a burning for thee; and they shall lament thee, saying, Ah Lord! for I have spoken the word, saith Jehovah.6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,7 when the king of Babylon’s army was fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah; for these alone remained of the cities of Judah as fortified cities.8 The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people that were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;9 that every man should let his man-servant, and every man his maid-servant, that is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; that none should make bondmen of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.10 And all the princes and all the people obeyed, that had entered into the covenant, that every one should let his man-servant, and every one his maid-servant, go free, that none should make bondmen of them any more; they obeyed, and let them go:11 but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.12 Therefore the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,13 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,14 At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother that is a Hebrew, that hath been sold unto thee, and hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.15 And ye were now turned, and had done that which is right in mine eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:16 but ye turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and ye brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.17 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: ye have not hearkened unto me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim unto you a liberty, saith Jehovah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, that have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me, when they cut the calf in twain and passed between the parts thereof;19 the princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, that passed between the parts of the calf;20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food unto the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the earth.21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, that are gone away from you.22 Behold, I will command, saith Jehovah, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

시드기야 왕에 대한 예언

1 이 말씀은, 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살이, 자기의 모든 군대와 자기의 통치를 받고 있는 땅의 모든 왕국과 모든 백성을 이끌고, 예루살렘과 그 주변의 모든 성읍들을 공격하고 있을 때에, 주님께서 예레미야에게 하신 말씀이다. 2 “나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 너는 어서 유다 왕 시드기야에게 가서, 나의 말을 전하여라. 나 주가 말한다. 내가 이 도성을 바빌로니아 왕의 손에 넘겨 주어서, 그가 이 도성에 불을 지르게 하겠다. 3 너도 그의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고, 꼼짝없이 붙잡혀서 그의 손아귀에 들어갈 것이다. 너는 바빌로니아 왕 앞에 끌려 나가, 그의 얼굴을 직접 보게 될 것이며, 그는 너에게 항복을 요구할 것이다. 너는 바빌로니아로 끌려갈 것이다. 4 유다 왕 시드기야야, 나 주의 약속을 들어라. 내가 너에게 말한다. 시드기야야, 너는 칼에 찔려 죽지 않고, 5 평안히 죽을 것이다. 그리고 사람들은 네 조상 곧 너보다 먼저 살았던 선왕들의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 향불을 피웠던 것처럼, 네 죽음도 슬퍼하여 향불을 피우며 ‘슬픕니다, 임금님’ 하면서, 너를 애도하여 조가를 부를 것이다. 이것은 내가 친히 약속하는 말이다. 나 주가 하는 말이다.” 6 예언자 예레미야가 예루살렘에서 유다 왕 시드기야에게 이 모든 말씀을 전하였다. 7 그 때에 바빌로니아 왕의 군대는 예루살렘과 유다의 남은 성읍들을 공격하고 있었는데, 그 당시 유다의 요새화된 성읍들 가운데서 남은 것이라고는 라기스와 아세가뿐이었다.

종들에 대한 약속 위반

8 주님께서 예레미야에게 말씀하셨는데, 그 때에는 이미 유다 왕 시드기야가 종들에게 자유를 줄 것을 선포하는 언약을 예루살렘에 있는 모든 백성과 맺은 뒤였다. 9 이 언약은, 누구나 자기의 남종과 여종이 히브리 남자와 히브리 여자일 경우에, 그들을 자유인으로 풀어 주어서, 어느 누구도 동족인 유다 사람을 종으로 삼는 일이 없도록 한다는 것이었다. 10 모든 고관과 모든 백성은 이 계약에 동의하여, 각자 자기의 남종과 여종을 자유인으로 풀어 주고, 아무도 다시는 그들을 종으로 삼지 않기로 하고, 그들을 모두 풀어 주었다. 11 그러나 그 뒤에 그들은 마음이 바뀌어, 그들이 이미 자유인으로 풀어 준 남녀 종들을 다시 데려다가, 남종과 여종으로 부렸다. 12 그 때에 주님께서 예레미야에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. 13 “나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 내가 너희 조상을 이집트 땅 곧 그들이 종살이하던 집에서 데리고 나올 때에, 그들과 언약을 세우며, 이렇게 명하였다. 14 t‘동족인 히브리 사람이 너에게 팔려 온 지 칠 년째가 되거든, 그를 풀어 주어라. 그가 육 년 동안 너를 섬기면, 그 다음 해에는 네가 그를 자유인으로 풀어 주어서, 너에게서 떠나게 하여라.’ 그러나 너희 조상은 나의 말을 듣지도 않았으며, 귀를 기울이지도 않았다. 15 그런데 최근에 와서야 너희가 비로소 마음을 돌이켜서, 각자 동족에게 자유를 선언하여 줌으로써, 내가 보기에 올바른 일을 하였다. 그것도 나를 섬기는 성전으로 들어와서, 내 앞에서 언약까지 맺으며 한 것이었다. 16 그러나 너희가 또 돌아서서 내 이름을 더럽혀 놓았다. 너희가 각자의 남종과 여종들을 풀어 주어, 그들이 마음대로 자유인이 되게 하였으나, 너희는 다시 그들을 데려다가, 너희의 남종과 여종으로 부리고 있다. 17 그러므로 나 주가 말한다. 너희는 모두 너희의 친척, 너희의 동포에게 자유를 선언하라는 나의 명령을 듣지 않았다. 그러므로 보아라, 나도 너희에게 자유를 선언하여 너희가 전쟁과 염병과 기근으로 죽게 할 것이니, 세상의 모든 민족이 이것을 보고 무서워 떨 것이다. 나 주가 하는 말이다. 18 송아지를 두 조각으로 갈라 놓고, 그 사이로 지나가 내 앞에서 언약을 맺어 놓고서도, 그 언약의 조문을 지키지 않고 나의 언약을 위반한 그 사람들을, 내가 이제 그 송아지와 같이 만들어 놓겠다. 19 유다의 지도자들이나 예루살렘의 지도자들이나, 내시들이나 제사장들이나, 이 땅의 백성이나 할 것 없이, 갈라진 송아지 사이로 지나간 자들은 모조리 20 내가 그들의 목숨을 노리는 원수들의 손에 넘겨 주겠다. 그러면 그들의 시체가 공중의 새들과 들짐승들의 먹이가 될 것이다. 21  유다 왕 시드기야와 그 고관들도 그들의 목숨을 노리는 원수들의 손에 넘겨 주고, 너희에게서 떠나가 있는 바빌로니아 왕의 군대의 손에 넘겨 주겠다. 22 보아라, 내가 명령을 내려서, 바빌로니아 왕의 군대를 이 도성으로 다시 불러다가, 그들이 이 도성을 공격하여 점령하게 하고 불을 지르게 하겠다. 내가 유다의 성읍들을 황무지로 만들어서, 아무도 살 수 없는 곳으로 만들겠다. 나 주의 말이다.”
