Jeremiah 5

1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh truth; and I will pardon her.2 And though they say, As Jehovah liveth; surely they swear falsely.3 O Jehovah, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.4 Then I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God:5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, and the law of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall destroy them, a leopard shall watch against their cities; every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces; because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.7 How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses.8 They were as fed horses roaming at large; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her branches; for they are not Jehovah’s.11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith Jehovah.12 They have denied Jehovah, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:13 and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.14 Wherefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.16 Their quiver is an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.17 And they shall eat up thy harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat; they shall eat up thy flocks and thy herds; they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig-trees; they shall beat down thy fortified cities, wherein thou trustest, with the sword.18 But even in those days, saith Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you.19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore hath Jehovah our God done all these things unto us? then shalt thou say unto them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served foreign gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.20 Declare ye this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; that have eyes, and see not; that have ears, and hear not:22 Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good from you.26 For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men.27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxed rich.28 They are waxed fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?30 A wonderful and horrible thing is come to pass in the land:31 the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

예레미야서 5

예루살렘의 죄

1 “예루살렘에 사는 사람들아, 예루살렘의 모든 거리를 두루 돌아다니며, 둘러보고 찾아보아라. 예루살렘의 모든 광장을 샅샅이 뒤져 보아라. 너희가 그 곳에서, 바르게 일하고 진실하게 살려고 하는 사람을 하나라도 찾는다면, 내가 이 도성을 용서하겠다.”

2 그들이 주님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하고, 주님을 섬긴다고 말하지만, 말하는 것과 사는 것이 다르다.

3 주님, 주님께서는 몸소 진실을 찾고 계셨습니다. 주님께서 그들을 때리셨어도 그들은 정신을 차리지 않으며, 주님께서 그들을 멸망시키신 것인데도 그들은 교훈받기를 거절합니다. 그들은 얼굴을 바윗돌보다도 더 굳게 하고, 주님께로 돌아오기를 거절합니다.

4 나는 이러한 생각도 해보았다. ‘가난하고 무식한 사람들은 주님의 길도 모르고 하나님께서 주신 법도 모르니, 그처럼 어리석게 행동할 수밖에 없겠지.

5 이제 부유하고 유식한 사람들에게 가서, 그들에게 이야기를 해보자. 그들이야말로 주님의 길과 하나님께서 주신 법을 알고 있을 것이다.’ 그러나 그들도 한결같이 고삐 풀린 망아지들이다. 멍에를 부러뜨리고, 결박한 끈을 끊어 버린 자들이다.

6 그러므로 사자가 숲 속에서 뛰쳐 나와서, 그들을 물어 뜯을 것이다. 사막의 늑대가 그들을 찢어 죽일 것이다. 표범이 성읍마다 엿보고 있으니, 성 바깥으로 나오는 자마다 모두 찢겨 죽을 것이다. 그들의 죄가 아주 크고 하나님을 배반한 행위가 매우 크구나.

7 “예루살렘아, 내가 너를 어떻게 용서하여 줄 수가 있겠느냐? 너의 자식들이 나를 버리고 떠나서, 신도 아닌 것들을 두고 맹세하여 섬겼다. 내가 그들을 배불리 먹여 놓았더니, 그들은 창녀의 집으로 몰려가서, 모두가 음행을 하였다.

8 그들은 살지고 정욕이 왕성한 숫말과 같이 되어서, 각기 이웃의 아내를 탐내어 울부짖는다.

9 이런 일을 내가 벌하지 않을 수가 있겠느냐? 나 주의 말이다. 이런 백성에게 내가 보복하지 않을 수가 있겠느냐?”

10 “이스라엘의 대적들아, 너희는 저 언덕으로 올라가서 내 포도원을 망쳐 놓아라. 전멸시키지는 말고, 그 가지만 모두 잘라 버려라. 그것들은 이미 나 주의 것이 아니다.

11  이스라엘과 유다가 완전히 나를 배반하고 떠나갔다. 나 주의 말이다.”

주님께서 백성을 버리시다

12 이 백성이 주님을 부인하며 말한다. “그는 아무것도 아니다. 어떤 재앙도 우리를 덮치지 않을 것이다. 우리는 전란이나 기근을 당하지 않을 것이다.”

13 “그러나 예레미야야, 이러한 예언자들에게는, 내가 아무런 예언도 준 일이 없다. 그들의 말은 허풍일 뿐이다.”

14 “그들이 그런 말을 하였으니, 보아라, 내가 너의 입에 있는 나의 말을 불이 되게 하고, 이 백성은 장작이 되게 하겠다. 불이 장작을 모두 태울 것이다.” “그러므로 나 만군의 주 하나님이 말한다.

15  이스라엘 백성아, 내가 먼 곳에서 한 민족을 데려다가, 너희를 치게 하겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 그 민족은 강하며, 옛적부터 내려온 민족이다. 그 민족의 언어를 네가 알지 못하며, 그들이 말을 하여도 너는 알아듣지 못한다.

16 그들의 화살은 모두 열린 무덤과 같고, 그들은 모두 용사들이다.

17 네가 거둔 곡식과 너의 양식을 그들이 먹어 치우고, 너의 아들과 딸들도 그들이 죽이고, 너의 양 떼와 소 떼도 그들이 잡아먹고, 너의 포도와 무화과도 그들이 모두 먹어 치울 것이다. 네가 의지하고 있는 견고한 성들도 그들이 모두 칼로 무너뜨릴 것이다.”

하나님께서 백성에게 경고하시다

18 “그러나 그럴 때에도, 내가 너희를 완전히 멸망시키지는 않겠다. 나 주의 말이다. 19 예레미야야, 그들이 ‘무엇 때문에 주 우리의 하나님께서 우리에게 이런 모든 일을 하셨는가?’ 하고 너에게 물으면, 너는 그들에게 말하여 주어라. ‘너희가 너희 땅에서 나를 버리고 다른 신들을 섬겼으니, 이제는 너희가 남의 나라 땅에서 다른 나라 사람을 섬겨야 할 것이기 때문이다.’”

20 “너는 이 말을 야곱의 자손에게 전하고, 유다 백성에게 들려주어라.

21 이 어리석고 깨달을 줄 모르는 백성아, 눈이 있어도 볼 수가 없고, 귀가 있어도 들을 수가 없는 백성아, 너희는 이제 내가 하는 말을 잘 들어라.

22 너희는 내가 두렵지도 않으냐? 나 주의 말이다. 너희는 내 앞에서 떨리지도 않느냐? 나는 모래로 바다의 경계선을 만들어 놓고, 바다가 넘어설 수 없는 영원한 경계선을 그어 놓았다. 비록 바닷물이 출렁거려도 그 경계선을 없애지 못하고, 아무리 큰 파도가 몰아쳐도 그 경계선을 넘어설 수가 없다.

23 그러나 너희는 목이 곧아 고집이 세고 반역하는 백성이어서, 나에게서 돌아서서 멀리 떠나고 말았다.

24 너희는 마음 속으로라도 ‘주 우리의 하나님은 두려운 분이다. 그분은 제때에 비를 주고, 이른 비와 늦은 비를 철따라 내리며, 곡식을 거두는 일정한 시기를 정하여 주었다’ 하고 말한 적이 없다.

25 바로 너희의 모든 죄악이 이러한 것들을 누리지 못하게 하였고, 너희의 온갖 범죄가 그 좋은 것들을 가로막아, 너희에게 이르지 못하게 하였다.”

26 “나의 백성 가운데는 흉악한 사람들이 있어서, 마치 새 잡는 사냥꾼처럼, 허리를 굽히고 숨어 엎드리고, 수많은 곳에 덫을 놓아, 사람을 잡는다.

27 조롱에 새를 가득히 잡아넣듯이, 그들은 남을 속여서 빼앗은 재물로 자기들의 집을 가득 채워 놓았다. 그렇게 해서, 그들은 세도를 부리고, 벼락부자가 되었다.

28 그들은 피둥피둥 살이 찌고, 살에서 윤기가 돈다. 악한 짓은 어느 것 하나 못하는 것이 없고, 자기들의 잇속만 채운다. 고아의 억울한 사정을 올바르게 재판하지도 않고, 가난한 사람들의 권리를 지켜 주는 공정한 판결도 하지 않는다.

29 이런 일들을 내가 벌하지 않을 수 있겠느냐? 나 주의 말이다. 이러한 백성에게 내가 보복하지 않을 수 있겠느냐?”

30 “지금 이 나라에서는, 놀랍고도 끔찍스러운 일들이 일어나고 있다.

31 예언자들은 거짓으로 예언을 하며, 제사장들은 거짓 예언자들이 시키는 대로 다스리며, 나의 백성은 이것을 좋아하니, 마지막 때에 너희가 어떻게 하려느냐?”
