John 9

1 And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth.2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?3 Jesus answered, Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.4 We must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.5 When I am in the world, I am the light of the world.6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay,7 and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent). He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.8 The neighbors therefore, and they that saw him aforetime, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?9 Others said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.10 They said therefore unto him, How then were thine eyes opened?11 He answered, The man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to Siloam, and wash: so I went away and washed, and I received sight.12 And they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.13 They bring to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.14 Now it was the sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.15 Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.16 Some therefore of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. But others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such signs? And there was division among them.17 They say therefore unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, in that he opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.18 The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,19 and asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? How then doth he now see?20 His parents answered and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:21 but how he now seeth, we know not; or who opened his eyes, we know not: ask him; he is of age; he shall speak for himself.22 These things said his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.24 So they called a second time the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner.25 He therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.26 They said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?27 He answered them, I told you even now, and ye did not hear; wherefore would ye hear it again? would ye also become his disciples?28 And they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses.29 We know that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is.30 The man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes.31 We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.32 Since the world began it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind.33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?36 He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?37 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with thee.38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.39 And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind.40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see: your sin remaineth.

나면서부터 눈 먼 사람을 고치시다

1  예수께서 가시다가, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람을 보셨다. 2 제자들이 예수께 물었다. “선생님, 이 사람이 눈먼 사람으로 태어난 것이, 누구의 죄 때문입니까? 이 사람의 죄입니까? 부모의 죄입니까?” 3 예수께서 대답하셨다. “이 사람이 죄를 지은 것도 아니요, 그의 부모가 죄를 지은 것도 아니다. 하나님께서 하시는 일들을 그에게서 드러내시려는 것이다. 4 t우리는 t나를 보내신 분의 일을 낮 동안에 해야 한다. 아무도 일할 수 없는 밤이 곧 온다. 5 내가 세상에 있는 동안, 나는 세상의 빛이다.” 6 예수께서 이 말씀을 하신 뒤에, 땅에 침을 뱉어서, 그것으로 진흙을 개어 그의 눈에 바르시고, 7 그에게 실로암 못으로 가서 씻으라고 말씀하셨다. (‘실로암’은 번역하면 ‘보냄을 받았다’는 뜻이다.) 그 눈먼 사람이 가서 씻고, 눈이 밝아져서 돌아갔다. 8 이웃 사람들과, 그가 전에 거지인 것을 보아 온 사람들이 말하기를 “이 사람은 앉아서 구걸하던 사람이 아니냐?” 하였다. 9 다른 사람들 가운데는 “이 사람이 그 사람이다” 하고 말하는 사람도 더러 있었고, 또 더러는 “그가 아니라 그와 비슷한 사람이다” 하고 말하기도 하였다. 그런데 눈을 뜨게 된 그 사람은 “내가 바로 그 사람이오” 하고 말하였다. 10 사람들이 그에게 물었다. “그러면 어떻게 눈을 뜨게 되었소?” 11 그가 대답하였다. “예수라는 사람이 진흙을 개어 내 눈에 바르고, 나더러 실로암에 가서 씻으라고 하였소. 그래서 내가 가서 씻었더니, 보게 되었소.” 12 사람들이 눈을 뜨게 된 사람에게 묻기를 “그 사람이 어디에 있소?” 하니, 그는 “모르겠소” 하고 대답하였다.

비뚤어진 바리새파 사람들

13 그들은 전에 눈먼 사람이던 그를 바리새파 사람들에게 데리고 갔다. 14 그런데 예수께서 진흙을 개어 그의 눈을 뜨게 하신 날이 안식일이었다. 15 바리새파 사람들은 또다시 그에게 어떻게 보게 되었는지를 물었다. 그는 “그분이 내 눈에 진흙을 바르신 다음에 내가 눈을 씻었더니, 이렇게 보게 되었습니다” 하고 대답하였다. 16 바리새파 사람들 가운데 더러는 말하기를 “안식일을 지키지 않는 것으로 보아서, 그는 하나님에게서 온 사람이 아니오” 하였고, 더러는 “죄가 있는 사람이 어떻게 그러한 t표징을 행할 수 있겠소?” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 그들 사이에 의견이 갈라졌다. 17 그들은 눈멀었던 사람에게 다시 물었다. “그가 당신의 눈을 뜨게 하였는데, 당신은 그를 어떻게 생각하오?” 그가 대답하였다. “그분은 예언자입니다.” 18  유대 사람들은, 그가 전에 눈먼 사람이었다가 보게 되었다는 사실을 믿지 않고, 마침내 그 부모를 불러다가 19 물었다. “이 사람이, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람이었다는 당신의 아들이오? 그런데, 지금은 어떻게 보게 되었소?” 20 부모가 대답하였다. “이 아이가 우리 아들이라는 것과, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람이었다는 것은, 우리가 압니다. 21 그런데 우리는 그가 지금 어떻게 보게 되었는지도 모르고, 또 누가 그 눈을 뜨게 하였는지도 모릅니다. 다 큰 사람이니, 그에게 물어 보십시오. 그가 자기 일을 이야기할 것입니다.” 22 그 부모는 유대 사람들이 무서워서 이렇게 말한 것이다. t예수를 t그리스도라고 고백하는 사람은 누구든지 회당에서 내쫓기로, 유대 사람들이 이미 결의해 놓았기 때문이다. 23 그래서 그의 부모가, 그 아이가 다 컸으니 그에게 물어보라고 말한 것이다. 24  바리새파 사람들은 눈멀었던 그 사람을 두 번째로 불러서 말하였다. “영광을 하나님께 돌려라. 우리가 알기로, 그 사람은 죄인이다.” 25 그는 이렇게 대답하였다. “나는 그분이 죄인인지 아닌지는 모릅니다. 다만 한 가지 내가 아는 것은, 내가 눈이 멀었다가, 지금은 보게 되었다는 것입니다.” 26 그래서 그들은 그에게 물었다. “그 사람이 네게 한 일이 무엇이냐? 그가 네 눈을 어떻게 뜨게 하였느냐?” 27 그는 대답하였다. “그것은 내가 이미 여러분에게 말하였는데, 여러분은 곧이듣지 않았습니다. 그러면서 어찌하여 다시 들으려고 합니까? 여러분도 그분의 제자가 되려고 합니까?” 28 그러자 그들은 그에게 욕설을 퍼붓고 말하였다. “너는 그 사람의 제자이지만, 우리는 모세의 제자이다. 29 우리는 하나님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다는 것을 알고 있다. 그러나 그 사람은 어디에서 왔는지 우리는 알지 못한다.” 30 그가 그들에게 대답하였다. “그분이 내 눈을 뜨게 해주셨는데도, 여러분은 그분이 어디에서 왔는지 모른다니, 참 이상한 일입니다. 31 하나님께서는 죄인들의 말은 듣지 않으시지만, 하나님을 공경하고 그의 뜻을 행하는 사람의 말은 들어주시는 줄을, 우리는 압니다. 32 나면서부터 눈먼 사람의 눈을 누가 뜨게 하였다는 말은, 창세로부터 이제까지 들어 본 적이 없습니다. 33 그가 하나님께로부터 오신 분이 아니라면, 아무 일도 하지 못하셨을 것입니다.” 34 그들은 그에게 말하였다. “네가 완전히 죄 가운데서 태어났는데도, 우리를 가르치려고 하느냐?” 그리고 그들은 그를 바깥으로 내쫓았다.

참으로 눈 먼 사람

35  바리새파 사람들이 그 사람을 내쫓았다는 말을 예수께서 들으시고, 그를 만나서 물으셨다. “네가 t인자를 믿느냐?” 36 그가 대답하였다. “t선생님, 그분이 어느 분입니까? 내가 그분을 믿겠습니다.” 37 예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 이미 그를 보았다. 너와 말하고 있는 사람이 바로 그이다.” 38 그는 “t주님, 내가 믿습니다” 하고 말하고서, 예수께 엎드려 절하였다. 39 예수께서 또 말씀하셨다. “나는 이 세상을 심판하러 왔다. 못 보는 사람은 보게 하고, 보는 사람은 못 보게 하려는 것이다.” 40  예수와 함께 있던 바리새파 사람들이 이 말씀을 듣고 나서 말하였다. “우리도 눈이 먼 사람이란 말이오?” 41 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 눈이 먼 사람들이라면, 도리어 죄가 없을 것이다. 그러나, 너희가 지금 본다고 말하니, 너희의 죄가 그대로 남아 있다.”
