Joshua 2

1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:5 and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.7 And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;9 and she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.10 For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.11 And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;13 and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.14 And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.17 And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household.19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.20 But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.23 Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

여호수아가 여리고에 정탐꾼을 보내다

1  눈의 아들 여호수아가 싯딤에서 정탐꾼 두 사람을 보내며 일렀다. “가서, 몰래 그 땅을 정탐하여라. 특히 여리고 성을 잘 살펴라.” 그들은 그 곳을 떠나, 어느 창녀의 집에 들어가 거기에서 묵었다. 그 집에는 이름이 라합이라고 하는 t창녀가 살고 있었다. 2 그 때에 여리고 왕은 이런 보고를 받았다. “아룁니다. 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 몇 사람이 오늘 밤에 이 모든 땅을 정탐하려고 이 곳으로 왔습니다.” 3 여리고 왕이 라합에게 전갈을 보냈다. “너에게 온 사람들 곧 네 집에 온 사람들을 데려오너라. 그들은 이 온 땅을 정탐하려고 왔다.” 4 그러나 그 여인은 두 사람을 데려다가 숨겨 놓고, 이렇게 말하였다. “그 사람들이 저에게로 오기는 했습니다만, 그들이 어디서 왔는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 5 그리고 그들은 날이 어두워 성문을 닫을 때쯤 떠났는데, 그들이 어디로 갔는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 빨리 사람을 풀어 그들을 뒤쫓게 하시면, 따라잡을 수도 있을 것입니다.” 6 그러나 그 때는, 그 여인이 그들을 지붕으로 데리고 올라가, 자기네 지붕 위에 널어 놓은 삼대 속에 숨겨 놓은 뒤였다. 7 뒤쫓는 사람들이 요단 길을 따라 나루터까지 그들을 뒤쫓았고, 뒤쫓는 사람들이 나가자마자 성문이 닫혔다. 8 정탐꾼들이 잠들기 전에, 라합은 지붕 위에 있는 그들에게 올라가서 9 말하였다. “나는 주님께서 이 땅을 당신들에게 주신 것을 압니다. 우리는 당신들 때문에 공포에 사로잡혀 있고, 이 땅의 주민들은 모두 하나같이 당신들 때문에 간담이 서늘했습니다. 10 당신들이 이집트에서 나올 때에, 주님께서 당신들 앞에서 어떻게 t홍해의 물을 마르게 하셨으며, 또 당신들이 요단 강 동쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 두 왕 시혼과 옥을 어떻게 t전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤는가 하는 소식을, 우리가 들었기 때문입니다. 11 우리는 그 말을 듣고 간담이 서늘했고, 당신들 때문에 정신을 잃고 말았습니다. 위로는 하늘에서 아래로는 땅 위에서, 과연 주 당신들의 하나님만이 참 하나님이십니다. 12 내가 당신들에게 은혜를 베풀었으니, 이제 당신들도 내 아버지의 집안에 은혜를 베푸시겠다고 주님 앞에서 맹세를 하시고, 그것을 지키겠다는 확실한 징표를 나에게 주십시오. 13 그리고 나의 부모와 형제자매들과 그들에게 속한 모든 식구를 살려 주시고, 죽지 않도록 우리의 생명을 구하여 주십시오.” 14 정탐꾼들이 그 여인에게 말하였다. “t우리가 목숨을 내놓고라도, 약속한 것은 지키겠소. 우리가 한 일을 어느 누구에게도 일러바치지 않는다면, 주님께서 우리에게 이 땅을 주실 때에, 우리는 친절과 성실을 다하여 그대를 대하겠소.” 15  라합은 성벽 위에 있는 집에 살고 있었기 때문에, 창문으로 밧줄을 늘어뜨려 그들을 달아내려 주었다. 16 그리고 여인은 그들에게 말하였다. “뒤쫓는 사람들이 당신들과 마주치지 않도록 산으로 가십시오. 거기에서 사흘 동안 숨어 있다가, 뒤쫓는 사람들이 돌아간 다음에 당신들이 갈 길을 가십시오.” 17 그 사람들이 그 여인에게 말하였다. “당신이 우리와 맺은 이 맹세에 대하여 우리가 허물이 없게 하겠소. 18 이렇게 합시다. 여기 홍색 줄이 있으니, 우리가 이 땅으로 들어올 때에, 당신이 우리를 달아 내렸던 그 창문에 이 홍색 줄을 매어 두시오. 그리고 당신의 아버지와 어머니와 오라버니들과 아버지 집안의 모든 식구를 다 당신의 집에 모여 있게 하시오. 19 누구든지 당신의 집 대문에서 밖으로 나가서 죽으면, 그 죽음에 대한 책임은 죽은 사람 자신이 져야 하며, 우리는 책임을 지지 않겠소. 그러나 우리가 당신과 함께 집 안에 있는 사람에게 손을 대서 죽으면, 그 죽음에 대한 책임은 우리가 질 것이오. 20 그러나 당신이, 우리가 한 일을 누설하면, 당신이 우리와 맺은 맹세에 대하여 우리는 아무런 책임이 없소.” 21 그러자 라합은, 그들의 말대로 하겠다고 대답하고, 그들을 보냈다. 그들이 간 뒤에, 라합은 홍색 줄을 창에 매달았다. 22 그들은 그 곳을 떠나 산에 다다라서, 사흘 동안 거기에 머물러 있었다. 뒤쫓는 사람들은 모든 길을 수색하였으나, 정탐꾼들을 찾지 못하고 되돌아갔다. 23 두 사람은 산에서 다시 내려와 t강을 건넜고, 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 이르러서, 그들이 겪은 모든 일을 보고하였다. 24 그들이 여호수아에게 말하였다. “주님께서 그 땅을 모두 우리 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로 그 땅의 모든 주민이 우리를 무서워하고 있습니다.”
