Judges 9

1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.3 And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.5 And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.6 And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.9 But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?10 And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.11 But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?12 And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.16 Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands17 (for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:18 and ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);19 if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:20 but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:24 that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.25 And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.27 And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?29 And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city to take part against thee.32 Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:33 and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.37 And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.

41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; And he rose up against them, and smote them.44 And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.47 And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and gat them up to the roof of the tower.52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.53 And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and brake his skull.54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.56 Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;57 and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

사사기 9

아비멜렉

1 어느 날 기드온의 아들 아비멜렉은 자기 어머니의 친정 식구들이 살고 있는 세겜으로 가서

2 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “세겜 사람들에게 기드온의 아들 70명이 다스리는 것과 한 사람이 다스리는 것 중에 어느 것이 더 좋은지 물어 보십시오. 나는 살과 피를 함께 나눈 여러분의 친척임을 잊지 말아야 합니다.”

3 외갓집 식구들이 세겜 사람들에게 가서 이 모든 말을 전하자 그들은 마음이 아비멜렉에게로 기울어져 “그는 우리의 친척이다” 하며 아비멜렉을 따르기로 결정하였다.

4 세겜 사람들이 바알브릿의 신전에서 은화 70개를 끄집어내어 아비멜렉에게 주자 그는 이 돈으로 건달들을 고용하여 자기를 따르게 하였다.

5 그리고 그는 오브라에 있는 자기 아버지 집으로 가서 그의 이복 형제 70명을 한 바위 위에 모아 놓고 쳐죽였는데 그 중에서 기드온의 막내 아들 요담만은 간신히 피해 살아 남았다.

6 그 후에 세겜 사람들과 벧－밀로 사람들은 세겜에 있는 상수리나무 아래에서 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼았다.

7 요담이 이 소식을 듣고 그리심산 꼭대기에 올라가서 세겜 사람들에게 외쳤다. “세겜 사람들아, 내 말을 들어라. 그러면 하나님이 너희 말을 들으실 것이다.

8 한번은 나무들이 자기들의 왕을 세우기로 결의하였다. 그래서 먼저 감람나무에게 가서 ‘네가 우리 왕이 되어라’ 하고 말하였다.

9 그러나 감람나무는 거절하며 ‘나의 기름은 하나님과 사람을 영화롭게 하는데 내가 어떻게 이 일을 버리고 너희를 다스리겠느냐?’ 하고 대답하였다.

10 그러자 나무들은 무화과나무에게 가서 ‘네가 우리 왕이 되어라’ 하였다.

11 그러나 무화과나무는 거절하며 ‘내가 어떻게 달고 맛있는 과일 맺는 일을 버리고 가서 너희를 다스리겠느냐?’ 하고 대답하였다.

12 그래서 그 나무들은 포도나무에게 가서 ‘네가 우리 왕이 되어라’ 하였으나

13 포도나무도 거절하며 ‘내가 어떻게 하나님과 사람을 기쁘게 하는 포도주 산출을 버리고 가서 너희를 다스리겠느냐?’ 하고 대답하였다.

14 그러자 모든 나무들이 가시나무에게 가서 ‘네가 와서 우리 왕이 되어라’ 하였다.

15 그때 가시나무는 ‘너희가 정말 나를 왕으로 삼고 싶으면 와서 내 그늘에 피하라. 그렇지 않으면 불이 내 가시덤불에서 나와 레바논의 백향목을 사를 것이다’ 하고 대답하였다.

16 “이제 너희는 아비멜렉을 너희 왕으로 삼았다. 이것이 옳고 참된 일이며 너희가 우리 아버지와 우리 가족에게 행한 일이 정당한 것인지 한번 생각해 보아라.

17 우리 아버지가 죽음을 무릅쓰고 싸워 너희를 미디안 사람들의 손에서 구해 내었다.

18 그러나 너희는 내 형제 70명 중에서 나를 제외하고 그들을 한 바위에서 모조리 죽였으며 우리 아버지의 첩이 낳은 아비멜렉이 너희 친척이라고 해서 너희가 그를 세겜의 왕으로 삼았다.

19 너희가 우리 아버지와 우리 가족에게 행한 일이 옳고 참된 일이라면 너희와 아비멜렉이 다 같이 기쁨을 누릴 것이나

20 만일 그렇지 않다면 아비멜렉에게서 불이 나와 세겜 사람과 벧－밀로 사람을 사르고 또 그들에게서도 불이 나와 아비멜렉을 사를 것이다!”

21 그러고서 요담은 자기 형 아비멜렉을 두려워하여 브엘로 도망가서 살았다.

22 아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 통치한 지 3년 만에

23 하나님이 아비멜렉과 세겜 사람들 사이에 악한 영을 보내셨으므로 세겜 사람들이 아비멜렉을 배반하였다.

24 하나님이 이렇게 하신 것은 아비멜렉과 세겜 사람들이 기드온의 아들 70명에게 포학한 짓을 하였으므로 아비멜렉의 학살을 도운 세겜 사람들과 아비멜렉의 죄를 갚으려고 하셨기 때문이었다.

25 세겜 사람들이 아비멜렉을 대적하여 산길에 사람을 매복시키고 지나가는 사람마다 강탈하게 하자 아비멜렉이 이 사실을 알게 되었다.

26 그때 에벳의 아들 가알이 자기 형제들과 함께 세겜으로 이사해 왔다. 그러자 세겜 사람들이 그를 따르고 의지하였다.

27 그들은 모두 밭으로 가서 포도를 따고 즙을 짜서 포도주를 만들어 잔치를 베풀었다. 그들이 신전에 들어가 먹고 마시며 아비멜렉을 저주할 때

28 에벳의 아들 가알이 일어나 외쳤다. “아비멜렉이 누군데 우리가 그를 섬기겠느냐? 그는 기드온의 아들이 아니냐? 스불은 그의 심복이다! 차라리 세겜의 아버지 하몰 집안을 섬기자. 우리가 무엇 때문에 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 하겠느냐?

29 내가 만일 이 백성의 지도자라면 아비멜렉을 제거하겠다.” 그러고서 그는 아비멜렉을 향하여 “너의 모든 군대를 이끌고 나오너라” 하고 외쳤다.

30 그때 그 성의 통치자인 스불이 가알의 말을 듣고 화가 치밀어 올라

31 몰래 아비멜렉에게 이런 전갈을 보냈다. “에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 형제들이 세겜으로 이사해 와서 당신을 배반하도록 지금 성 주민들을 선동하고 있습니다.

32 그러므로 당신은 밤에 군대를 이끌고 와서 밭에 매복하였다가

33 아침 동이 틀 때 일어나서 이 성을 기습하십시오. 가알과 그의 추종자들이 당신과 싸우려고 나올 때 기회를 봐서 좋으실 대로 처치하십시오.”

34 그래서 아비멜렉과 그의 군대는 밤에 일어나 네 부대로 나누어 세겜 주변에 매복하였다.

35 다음날 아침 에벳의 아들 가알이 나와서 성문 입구에 서자 아비멜렉과 그의 군대가 숨어 있던 곳에서 나왔다.

36 가알이 그들을 보고 스불에게 외쳤다. “보시오. 산에서 사람들이 내려오고 있습니다.” “혹시 산의 그림자를 사람으로 잘못 본 것이 아니오?”

37 “틀림없습니다. 저기를 보시오. 사람들이 산등성이에서 내려오고 있으며 또 한 떼는 2점쟁이 상수리나무 길로 내려오고 있습니다.”

38 그때 스불이 의기 양양하게 가알을 향해 외쳤다. “큰소리 치던 네 입이 지금 어디 있느냐? 너는 아비멜렉을 섬길 필요가 없다고 말하였다. 네가 경멸하던 사람들이 바로 저기에 있다. 어서 나가서 싸워 보아라!”

39 그래서 가알은 세겜 사람들을 이끌고 나가 아비멜렉과 싸웠으나

40 그에게 쫓겨 달아나고 말았으며 많은 사람들이 부상을 입어 성문 입구까지 즐비하게 쓰러졌다.

41 그러고서 아비멜렉은 아루마에 머물러 있었고 스불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 세겜에서 쫓아내어 거기서 살지 못하게 하였다.

42 다음날 아비멜렉은 세겜 사람들이 밭으로 나올 계획을 세우고 있다는 말을 듣고

43 자기 군대를 세 부대로 나누어 그 밭에서 매복하고 있다가 세겜 사람들이 성에서 나오자 그들은 숨어 있던 곳에서 일어나 그들을 치기 시작하였다.

44 아비멜렉과 그를 따르는 자들은 성문으로 달려가 그 곳을 지키고 다른 두 부대는 밭에서 세겜 사람들을 쳐서 모조리 죽였다.

45 아비멜렉은 하루 종일 그 성을 공격하여 결국 그 성을 점령하고 그 곳 주민들을 죽인 다음 그 성을 헐어 그 위에 소금을 뿌렸다.

46 세겜의 요새에 살고 있는 사람들이 이 소식을 듣고 엘－브릿 신전의 대피소로 들어갔다.

47 아비멜렉은 그들이 그 곳에 모여 있다는 말을 듣고

48 자기 부하들을 데리고 살몬산으로 올라갔다. 거기서 그는 도끼로 나뭇가지를 쳐서 자기 어깨에 메고 부하들에게도 빨리 그렇게 하라고 명령하였다.

49 그래서 그들은 각자 나뭇가지를 쳐서 한 다발씩 어깨에 메고 아비멜렉을 따라 그 신전의 대피소로 가서 그 곳에 나무를 쌓아 놓고 불을 질렀다. 그러자 그 안에 숨어 있던 세겜 사람 약 ,000명의 남녀가 불에 타서 죽었다.

50 그런 다음 아비멜렉은 데베스로 가서 그 성을 포위하여 점령하였다.

51 그러나 그 성 안에는 튼튼한 요새 하나가 있었는데 그 성의 모든 남녀가 그리로 도망하여 문을 걸어 잠그고 요새 꼭대기로 올라갔다.

52 아비멜렉이 그 요새를 공격하며 문 앞까지 가서 불을 지르려고 하는 순간

53 한 여자가 맷돌 윗짝을 그의 머리 위에 내리던져 그의 두골을 부숴버렸다.

54 그러자 그는 신음하며 자기 무기를 들고 다니는 젊은 부하를 급히 불러 “네 칼을 뽑아 나를 죽여라! 나는 여자의 손에 죽었다는 말을 듣고 싶지 않다” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 그가 칼로 아비멜렉을 찌르자 그는 곧 죽고 말았다.

55 이스라엘 사람들은 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보고 각자 집으로 돌아갔다.

56 이렇게 해서 하나님은 자기 형제 369명을 죽여 자기 아버지에게 악을 행한 아비멜렉의 죄를 갚으셨고

57 또 세겜 사람들도 그들의 악에 대한 대가를 받게 하셨는데 기드온의 아들 요담의 저주가 그대로 이루어졌다.
