Matthew 5

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him:2 and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.15 Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:22 but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.23 If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee,24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.26 Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the last farthing.

27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery:28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.29 And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.30 And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.31 It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:32 but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

33 Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:34 but I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God;35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black.37 But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil one.

38 Ye have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:39 but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.40 And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy:44 but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;45 that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust.46 For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?48 Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

산상 설교

1 예수님은 많은 사람들이 모여드는 것을 보시고 산에 올라가 앉으셨다. 그러자 제자들이 그분에게 나아왔다.

2 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 가르치셨다.

3 “마음이 가난한 사람들은 행복하다. 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.

4 슬퍼하는 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 위로를 받을 것이다.

5 유순한 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 땅을 물려받을 것이다.

6 의를 위해 굶주리고 목마른 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 원하는 것을 다 얻을 것이다.

7 남을 불쌍히 여기는 사람들은 행복하다. 하나님도 그들을 불쌍히 여기실 것이다.

8 마음이 깨끗한 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 하나님을 볼 것이다.

9 화평을 이루는 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 하나님의 아들이라 불릴 것이다.

10 의를 위해 핍박을 받는 사람들은 행복하다. 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.

11 “나 때문에 사람들이 너희를 욕하고 핍박하고 거짓말로 온갖 악담을 할 때에 너희는 행복하다.

12 하늘에서 큰 상이 너희를 기다리고 있다. 기뻐하고 즐거워하여라. 이전의 예언자들도 이런 핍박을 받았다.

13 “너희는 세상의 소금이다. 그런데 소금이 그 맛을 잃으면 어떻게 다시 짜게 할 수 있겠느냐? 그런 것은 아무 쓸모가 없어 밖에 버려져 사람들에게 짓밟힐 뿐이다.

14 너희는 세상의 빛이다. 산 위에 있는 마을은 잘 보이기 마련이다.

15 등불을 켜서 그릇으로 덮어 둘 사람은 아무도 없다. 오히려 그것을 등잔대 위에 올려놓아 집 안에 있는 모든 사람에게 비치게 하지 않겠느냐?

16 이와 같이 너희 빛을 사람들 앞에 비추게 하라. 그래서 사람들이 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지를 찬양하게 하라.

17 “내가 율법이나 예언자들을 없애러 왔다고 생각하지 말아라. 없애러 온 것이 아니라 완전하게 하러 왔다.

18 내가 분명히 말해 둔다. 하늘과 땅이 없어지기 전에는 율법의 2한 점이나 한 획도 결코 없어지지 않고 다 이루어질 것이다.

19 누구든지 이 계명 가운데 가장 작은 것 하나라도 어기거나 다른 사람에게 그렇게 하라고 가르치면 하늘 나라에서 가장 작은 사람이 될 것이다. 그러나 누구든지 계명을 실천하고 가르치면 하늘 나라에서 위대한 사람이 될 것이다.

20 내가 너희에게 말해 두지만 너희 생활이 율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들보다 의롭지 못하면 너희가 절대로 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못할 것이다.

21 “3모세의 법에는 4‘살인하지 말아라. 살인하면 누구든지 재판을 받게 된다’라고 쓰여 있다.

22 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 형제에게 이유 없이 화내는 사람은 재판을 받고, 자기 형제를 5어리석다고 욕하는 사람은 6법정에 끌려가게 될 것이며, ‘이 미련한 놈아!’ 하고 말하는 사람은 7지옥 불에 들어갈 것이다.

23 그러므로 제단에 예물을 드리다가 형제에게 원망 들을 만한 일이 생각나거든

24 예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 네 형제와 화해하라. 그리고 와서 예물을 드려라.

25 너를 고소하려는 사람과 함께 법정으로 갈 때 너는 도중에 그와 재빨리 타협하라. 그렇지 않고 재판을 받는 날이면 유치장 신세를 져야 할 것이다.

26 그렇게 되면 네가 8마지막 한푼까지 다 갚기 전에는 절대로 거기서 나오지 못할 것이다.

27 “또 율법에는 9‘간음하지 말아라’고 쓰여 있다.

28 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 정욕의 눈으로 여자를 바라보는 사람은 이미 마음으로 그녀와 간음하였다.

29 오른눈이 너를 죄 짓게 하거든 빼어 버려라. 몸의 한 부분을 잃을지라도 온 몸이 지옥에 던져지지 않는 것이 더 낫다.

30 또 오른손이 너를 죄 짓게 하면 그 손을 잘라 버려라. 몸의 한 부분을 잃을지라도 온 몸이 지옥에 떨어지지 않는 것이 더 낫다.

31 “또 율법에 10‘자기 아내와 이혼하는 사람은 누구든지 그녀에게 이혼 증서를 써 주어야 한다’라고 쓰여 있다.

32 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 음행한 일도 없는데 자기 아내와 이혼하는 사람은 아내로 간음하게 하는 자이며 이혼한 여자와 결혼하는 사람도 간음하는 자이다.

33 “또 옛 사람들에게 ‘거짓 맹세를 하지 말고 주님께 맹세한 것은 다 지켜라’고 한 말을 들어서 알 것이다.

34 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 절대로 맹세하지 말아라. 하늘을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 하늘은 하나님의 보좌이다.

35 땅을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 땅은 하나님의 발판이다. 예루살렘을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 예루살렘은 위대한 왕의 도시이다.

36 네 머리를 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 너는 머리카락 하나도 희거나 검게 할 수가 없다.

37 너희는 그저 ‘예’ 할 것은 ‘예’ 하고 ‘아니오’ 할 것은 ‘아니오’라고만 말하여라. 그 이상의 말은 악에서 나오는 것이다.

38 “또 11‘눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로 갚아라’ 한 말을 듣지 않았느냐?

39 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 악한 사람을 대적하지 말아라. 누가 네 오른뺨을 때리거든 왼뺨도 돌려 대어라.

40 너를 고소하여 속옷을 빼앗고자 하는 사람에게는 겉옷까지 주어라.

41 누가 네게 억지로 오 리를 가자 하거든 십 리를 가 주어라.

42 네게 요구하는 사람에게 주고 꾸어 달라는 사람에게 거절하지 말아라.

43 “12‘네 이웃을 사랑하고 원수를 미워하여라’는 말씀을 듣지 않았느냐?

44 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 원수를 사랑하고 너희를 핍박하는 사람들을 위해 기도하라.

45 그렇게 하는 것이 하나님 아버지의 자녀 된 도리이다. 하나님은 해가 악한 사람과 선한 사람에게 다 같이 비치게 하시고 의로운 사람과 의롭지 못한 사람에게 비를 똑같이 내려 주신다.

46 너희를 사랑하는 사람들만 사랑한다면 너희가 무슨 상을 받겠느냐? 세무원들도 그만큼은 하지 않느냐?

47 또 너희가 너희 형제들에게만 인사한다면 남보다 나을 것이 무엇이겠느냐? 13믿지 않는 사람들도 그렇게 하지 않느냐?

48 그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 완전하심과 같이 너희도 완전하여라.”
