Numbers 11
1 And the people were as murmurers, speaking evil in the ears of Jehovah: and when Jehovah heard it, his anger was kindled; and the fire of Jehovah burnt among them, and devoured in the uttermost part of the camp.2 And the people cried unto Moses; and Moses prayed unto Jehovah, and the fire abated.3 And the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of Jehovah burnt among them.
4 And the mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt for nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic:6 but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all save this manna to look upon.7 And the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium.8 The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.10 And Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled greatly; and Moses was displeased.11 And Moses said unto Jehovah, Wherefore hast thou dealt ill with thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?12 Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father carrieth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
16 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with thee.17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore Jehovah will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,20 but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected Jehovah who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?21 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.22 Shall flocks and herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?23 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Is Jehovah’s hand waxed short? now shalt thou see whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of Jehovah: and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the Tent.25 And Jehovah came down in the cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.
26 But there remained two men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but had not gone out unto the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.29 And Moses said unto him, Art thou jealous for my sake? would that all Jehovah’s people were prophets, that Jehovah would put his Spirit upon them!30 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
31 And there went forth a wind from Jehovah, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth.32 And the people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.33 While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the people, and Jehovah smote the people with a very great plague.34 And the name of that place was called Kibrothhattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted.35 From Kibrothhattaavah the people journeyed unto Hazeroth; and they abode at Hazeroth.

1 주님께서 들으시는 앞에서 백성들이 심하게 불평을 하였다. 주님께서 듣고 진노하시어, 그들 가운데 불을 놓아 진 언저리를 살라 버리셨다. 2 백성이 모세에게 부르짖었다. 모세가 주님께 기도드리니 불이 꺼졌다. 3 그래서 사람들은 그 곳 이름을 t다베라라고 불렀다. 주님의 불이 그들 가운데서 타올랐기 때문이다.
모세가 장로 일흔 명을 뽑다

이스라엘 자손 가운데 섞여 살던 무리들이 먹을 것 때문에 탐욕을 품으니, 이스라엘 자손들도 또다시 울며 불평하였다. “누가 우리에게 고기를 먹여 줄까? 5 이집트에서 생선을 공짜로 먹던 것이 기억에 생생한데, 그 밖에도 오이와 수박과 부추와 파와 마늘이 눈에 선한데, 6 이제 우리 눈에 보이는 것이라고는 이 만나밖에 없으니, 입맛마저 떨어졌다.”

만나의 모양은 t깟 씨와 같고, 그 빛깔은 브돌라와 같았다. 8 백성이 두루 다니면서 그것을 거두어다가, 맷돌에 갈거나 절구에 찧고, 냄비에 구워 과자를 만들었다. 그 맛은 기름에 반죽하여 만든 과자 맛과 같았다. 9 밤이 되어 진에 이슬이 내릴 때면, 만나도 그 위에 내리곤 하였다.

모세는, 백성이 각 가족별로, 제각기 자기 장막 어귀에서 우는 소리를 들었다. 주님께서 이 일로 대단히 노하셨고, 모세는 그 앞에서 걱정이 태산 같았다. 11 모세가 주님께 여쭈었다. “어찌하여 주님께서는 주님의 종을 이렇게도 괴롭게 하십니까? 어찌하여 저를 주님의 눈 밖에 벗어나게 하시어, 이 모든 백성을 저에게 짊어지우십니까? 12 이 모든 백성을 제가 배기라도 했습니까? 제가 그들을 낳기라도 했습니까? 어찌하여 저더러, 주님께서 그들의 조상에게 맹세하신 땅으로, 마치 유모가 젖먹이를 품듯이, 그들을 품에 품고 가라고 하십니까? 13 백성은 저를 보고 울면서 ‘우리가 먹을 수 있는 고기를 달라!’ 하고 외치는데, 이 모든 백성에게 줄 고기를, 제가 어디서 구할 수 있습니까? 14 저 혼자서는 도저히 이 모든 백성을 짊어질 수 없습니다. 저에게는 너무 무겁습니다. 15 주님께서 저에게 정말로 이렇게 하셔야 하겠다면, 그리고 제가 주님의 눈 밖에 나지 않았다면, 제발 저를 죽이셔서, 제가 이 곤경을 당하지 않게 해주십시오.”
16 주님께서 모세에게 대답하셨다. “이스라엘 장로들 가운데서, 네가 백성의 장로들 또는 그 지도자라고 알고 있는 사람들 일흔 명을 나에게로 불러 오너라. 너는 그들을 데리고 회막으로 와서 그들과 함께 서라. 17 내가 내려가 거기에서 너와 말하겠다. 그리고 너에게 내려 준 영을 그들에게도 나누어 주어서, 백성 돌보는 짐을, 그들이 너와 함께 지게 하겠다. 그러면 너 혼자서 애쓰지 않아도 될 것이다.
18 너는 또 백성에게 이렇게 말하여라.
내일을 맞이하여야 하니, 너희는 스스로를 거룩하게 하여라. 너희가 고기를 먹게 될 것이다. ‘누가 우리에게 고기를 먹이려나? 이집트에서는 우리가 참 좋았었는데’ 하고 울며 한 말이 나 주에게 들렸다. 이제 나 주가 너희에게 고기를 줄 터이니, 너희가 먹게 될 것이다. 19 하루만 먹고 그치지는 아니할 것이다. 이틀만도 아니고, 닷새만도 아니고, 열흘만도 아니고, 스무 날 동안만도 아니다. 20 한 달 내내, 냄새만 맡아도 먹기 싫을 때까지, 줄곧 그것을 먹게 될 것이다. 너희가 너희 가운데 있는 나 주를 거절하고, 내 앞에서 울면서 ‘우리가 왜 이집트를 떠났던가?’ 하고 후회하였기 때문이다.”

모세가 되물었다. “저를 둘러싸고 있는 백성의 보행자가 육십만 명입니다. 그런데 주님께서는 ‘그들에게 내가 고기를 주어, 한 달 내내 먹게 하겠다’ 하고 말씀하시나, 22 그들을 먹이려고 양 떼와 소 떼를 잡은들, 그들이 만족해 하겠습니까? 바다에 있는 고기를 모두 잡은들, 그들이 만족해 하겠습니까?”
23 주님께서 모세에게 대답하셨다. “나의 손이 짧아지기라도 하였느냐? 이제 너는 내가 말한 것이 너에게 사실로 이루어지는지 그렇지 아니한지를 볼 것이다.”

모세가 나가서 주님께서 하신 말씀을 백성에게 전달하였다. 그는 백성의 장로들 가운데서 일흔 명을 불러모아, 그들을 장막에 둘러세웠다. 25 그 때에 주님께서 구름에 휩싸여 내려오셔서 모세와 더불어 말씀하시고, 모세에게 내린 영을 장로들 일흔 명에게 내리셨다. 그 영이 그들 위에 내려와 머물자, 그들이 예언하였다. 이것은 처음이자 마지막이다. 그들은 다시는 예언하지 않았다.
26 그런데 두 남자가 진 안에 남아 있었다. 하나의 이름은 엘닷이고, 다른 하나의 이름은 메닷이었다. 그들은 명단에 올라 있던 이들이지만, 장막으로 가지 않았다. 그런데 영이 그들 위로 내려와 머물자, 그들도 진에서 예언하였다. 27 한 소년이 모세에게 달려와서, 엘닷과 메닷이 진에서 예언하였다고 알렸다.
28 그러자 젊었을 때부터 모세를 곁에서 모셔온 눈의 아들 여호수아가 나서서, 모세에게 말하였다. “어른께서는 이 일을 말리셔야 합니다.”
29 그러자 모세가 그에게 말하였다. “네가 나를 두고 질투하느냐? 나는 오히려 주님께서 주님의 백성 모두에게 그의 영을 주셔서, 그들 모두가 예언자가 되었으면 좋겠다.” 30 모세와 이스라엘 장로들은 함께 진으로 돌아왔다.
주님께서 메추라기를 보내시다
31 주님께서 바람을 일으키셨다. 주님께서 t바다 쪽에서 메추라기를 몰아, 진을 빙 둘러 이쪽으로 하룻길 될 만한 지역에 떨어뜨리시어, 땅 위로 두 자쯤 쌓이게 하셨다. 32 백성들이 일어나 바로 그 날 온종일, 그리고 밤새도록, 그리고 그 이튿날도 온종일 메추라기를 모았는데, 적게 모은 사람도 열 호멜은 모았다. 그들은 그것들을 진 주변에 널어 놓았다. 33 고기가 아직 그들의 이 사이에서 씹히기도 전에, 주님께서 백성에게 크게 진노하셨다. 주님께서는 백성을 극심한 재앙으로 치셨다. 34 바로 그 곳을, 사람들은 t기브롯 핫다아와라 불렀다. 탐욕에 사로잡힌 백성을 거기에 묻었기 때문이다.
35 백성은 기브롯 핫다아와를 떠나, 하세롯으로 행군하였다. 그들은 하세롯에서 멈추었다.
