1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,2 This is the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke.3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and he shall bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face:4 and Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.5 And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:6 and the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.8 And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place; and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water for impurity: it is a sin-offering.10 And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
11 He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days:12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.13 Whosoever toucheth a dead person, the body of a man that hath died, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of Jehovah; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water for impurity was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
14 This is the law when a man dieth in a tent: every one that cometh into the tent, and every one that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.15 And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean.16 And whosoever in the open field toucheth one that is slain with a sword, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.17 And for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the sin-offering; and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:18 and a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave:19 and the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
20 But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of Jehovah: the water for impurity hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them: and he that sprinkleth the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and he that toucheth the water for impurity shall be unclean until even.22 And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.

붉은 암송아지의 재
1 주님께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨다. 2 “다음은 나 주가 명하는 법의 율례다.
너는 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여, 흠 없는 온전한 붉은 암송아지, 곧 아직 멍에를 메어 본 일이 없는 것을, 너에게 끌고 오게 하여라. 3 너는 그것을 제사장 엘르아살에게 주어라. 그러면 그는 그것을 진 밖으로 끌고 가서, 자기가 보는 앞에서 잡게 할 것이다. 4 제사장 엘르아살은 그 피를 손가락에 찍고, 그 피를 회막 앞쪽으로 일곱 번 뿌려야 한다. 5 그 암송아지는 제사장이 보는 앞에서 불살라야 하며, 그 가죽과 고기와 피와 똥을 불살라야 한다. 6 제사장은 백향목과 우슬초와 홍색 털실을 가져 와서, 암송아지를 사르고 있는 그 불 가운데 그것들을 던져야 한다. 7 그런 다음에 제사장은 자기의 옷을 빨고, 물로 몸을 씻어야 한다. 그렇게 한 다음에야 그는 진 안으로 들어올 수 있다. 그 제사장의 부정한 상태는 저녁때까지 계속될 것이다. 8 그 암송아지를 불사른 사람도 물로 자기의 옷을 빨고, 물로 몸을 씻어야 한다. 그의 부정한 상태는 저녁때까지 계속될 것이다. 9 암송아지 재는 정결한 사람이 거두어서, 진 바깥 정결한 곳에 보관하여야 한다. 그것은, 이스라엘 자손 회중이 죄를 속하려 할 때에, 부정을 씻어내는 물에 타서 쓸 것이므로, 잘 보관하여야 한다. 10 암송아지 재를 거둔 사람도 자기의 옷을 빨아야 한다. 그의 부정한 상태는 저녁때까지 계속될 것이다.
이것은 이스라엘 자손 및 그들과 함께 사는 외국인들이 언제까지나 지켜야 할 율례이다.”
주검에 닿은 경우
11 “어느 누구의 주검이든, 사람의 주검에 몸이 닿은 사람은 이레 동안 부정하다. 12 t그는 사흘째 되는 날과 이레째 되는 날, 붉은 암송아지를 불사른 재를 탄 물로 스스로 정결하게 하여야 한다. 그러면 정하게 될 것이다. 그러나 그가 사흘째 되는 날과 이레째 되는 날에 자기의 몸을 정결하게 하지 않으면, 그냥 부정하다. 13 누구든지 주검, 곧 죽은 사람의 몸에 닿고도 스스로 정결하게 하지 않은 사람은, 주의 성막을 더럽히는 사람이다. 그 사람은 반드시 이스라엘에서 끊어져야 한다. 정결하게 하는 물을 그 몸에 뿌리지 아니하여 자신의 부정을 씻지 못하였으므로, 그의 부정이 여전히 그에게 남아 있기 때문이다.
14 다음은 장막에서 사람이 죽을 때에 지켜야 할 법이다. 그 장막 안으로 들어가는 사람이나 그 장막 안에 있는 사람은, 모두 이레 동안 부정하다. 15 어떤 그릇이든지, 그 위의 뚜껑을 열어 놓고 덮지 아니한 그릇들도 부정하게 된다. 16 들판에 있다가 칼에 맞아 죽은 사람이나, 그냥 죽은 사람이나, 그 죽은 사람의 뼈나, 아니면 그 무덤에라도 몸이 닿은 사람은, 누구나 이레 동안 부정하다. 17 그렇게 부정하게 되었을 때에는, 붉은 암송아지를 불사른 재를 그릇에 떠다가, 거기에 생수를 부어 죄를 씻는 물을 만든다. 18 그렇게 한 다음에, 정한 사람이 우슬초를 가져 와서, 그것으로 이 물을 찍어, 장막 위에와, 모든 기구 위에와, 거기에 있는 사람들 위에와, 뼈나 살해당한 자나 죽은 자나 무덤에 몸이 닿은 사람 위에 뿌린다. 19 정한 사람이 사흘째 되는 날과 이레째 되는 날에, 부정한 사람에게 이 잿물을 뿌려 준다. 그러면 이레째 되는 날, 부정을 탄 그 사람은 정하게 된다. 그는 옷을 빨고 물로 몸을 씻는다. 저녁때가 되면, 그는 정하게 된다. 20 그러나 부정을 탄 사람이, 그 부정을 씻어 내지 아니하면, 그 사람은 총회에서 제명되어야 한다. 정결하게 하는 물을 그의 위에 뿌리지 아니하여 그 더러움을 씻지 못하면, 주의 성소를 더럽히는 것이기 때문이다.
21 이것은 그들이 언제까지나 지켜야 할 율례이다. 정결하게 하는 물을 뿌린 사람도 자기의 옷을 빨아야 한다. 정결하게 하는 물에 몸이 닿아도, 그는 저녁때까지 부정하다. 22 부정한 사람이 닿은 것은 무엇이든지 부정하며, 그것에 몸이 닿은 사람도 저녁때까지 부정하다.”
