Numbers 22

1 And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.5 And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,11 Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you.14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:17 for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more.20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.

21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.22 And God’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Jehovah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.23 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.24 Then the angel of Jehovah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.25 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.26 And the angel of Jehovah went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.27 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.28 And Jehovah opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me, I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.

31 Then Jehovah opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.32 And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is perverse before me:33 and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times: unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.34 And Balaam said unto the angel of Jehovah, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.35 And the angel of Jehovah said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor?38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to speak anything? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth.40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

41 And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people.

모압의 왕이 발람을 불러오다

1  이스라엘 자손이 길을 떠나 모압 평지에 진을 쳤다. 그 곳은 요단 강 건너, 곧 여리고 맞은편이다. 2  십볼의 아들 발락은 이스라엘이 아모리 사람에게 한 모든 일을 보았다. 3 모압 사람들은 이스라엘 백성의 수가 대단히 많아서 몹시 무서워하였다. 모압 사람들은 이스라엘 자손이 나타난 것 때문에 두려워하였다. 4  모압 사람들이 미디안 장로들에게 말하였다. “이제 이 큰 무리들이 우리 주변에 있는 모든 것을 먹어치우고 있습니다. 마치 소가 들판의 풀을 뜯어먹듯 합니다.” 십볼의 아들 발락은 그 당시 모압의 왕이었다. 5 그는 브올의 아들 발람을 불러오려고 사신들을 브돌로 보내어 말을 전하게 하였다. 그 때에 발람은 큰 강 가, 자기 백성의 자손들이 사는 땅 브돌에 있었다. 발락이 한 말은 다음과 같다. “한 백성이 이집트에서 나와서, 온 땅을 덮고 있습니다. 드디어 바로 나의 맞은편에까지 와서 자리잡았습니다. 6 이제 오셔서, 나를 보아서 이 백성을 저주하여 주시기 바랍니다. 그들은 너무 강해서, 나로서는 도저히 감당할 수 없습니다. 그렇게만 해주신다면, 나는 그들을 쳐부수어서 이 땅에서 쫓아낼 수 있을 것입니다. 그대가 복을 비는 이는 복을 받고, 그대가 저주하는 이는 저주를 받는다는 것을, 나는 알고 있습니다.” 7  모압 장로들과 미디안 장로들은 길을 떠났다. 그들은 복채를 가지고 갔다. 발람에게 이르렀을 때에, 그들은 발락이 자기들에게 한 말을 전하였다. 8 그러자 발람이 그들에게 말하였다. “오늘 밤은 여기에서 지내십시오. 주님께서 나에게 하시는 그 말씀을 들어 본 다음에 알려 드리겠습니다.” 그리하여 모압 고관들은 발람과 함께 머물렀다. 9 하나님이 발람에게 오셔서 물으셨다. “너와 함께 있는 이 사람들이 누구냐?” 10 발람이 하나님께 아뢰었다. “십볼의 아들 발락 곧 모압 왕이 저에게 보낸 사신들입니다. 11 이집트에서 한 백성이 나왔는데, 그들이 온 땅을 덮었다고 합니다. 저더러 와서 발락에게 유리하도록 그 백성을 저주하여 달라는 부탁을 하였습니다. 그렇게만 해준다면, 발락은 그 백성을 쳐부수어서, 그들을 쫓아낼 수 있겠다는 것입니다.” 12 하나님이 발람에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 그 사신들과 함께 가지 말아라. 이집트에서 나온 그 백성은 복을 받은 백성이니 저주하지도 말아라.” 13 다음날 아침에 발람이 일어나, 발락이 보낸 고관들에게 말하였다. “당신들의 나라로 돌아가시기 바랍니다. 주님께서는 내가 당신들과 함께 가는 것을 허락하지 않으십니다.” 14 그리하여 모압 고관들은 일어나 발락에게로 돌아가서 보고하였다. “발람이 우리와 함께 오기를 거절하였습니다.” 15  발락은 사람들을 더 보냈다. 수도 늘리고 처음 갔던 이들보다 직위도 높은 사람들이었다. 16 그들이 발람에게 가서 말하였다. “십볼의 아들 발락이 말합니다. ‘아무것도 거리끼지 말고 나에게로 오시기 바랍니다. 17 내가 그대에게 아주 후하게 보답하겠고, 또 그대가 나에게 말씀하시는 것이면 무엇이든지 하겠습니다. 꼭 오셔서, 나에게 좋도록, 저 백성에게 저주를 빌어 주시기 바랍니다.’” 18 그러나 발람이 발락의 신하들에게 이렇게 대답하였다. “발락이 비록 그의 궁궐에 가득한 금과 은을 나에게 준다 해도, 주 나의 하나님의 명을 어기고서는, 크든 작든, 아무 일도 할 수 없습니다. 19 그대들은 오늘 밤은 이 곳에서 묵으십시오. 주님께서 나에게 무엇을 더 말씀하실지 알아보겠습니다.” 20 그 날 밤에 하나님이 발람에게 오셔서 말씀하셨다. “이 사람들이 너를 부르러 왔으니, 너는 일어나 그들과 함께 가거라. 그러나 내가 너에게 하는 말만 하도록 하여라.”

발람과 그의 나귀

21  발람은 아침에 일어나 자기 나귀에 안장을 얹고, 모압 고관들을 따라서 길을 나섰다. 22 그러나 그가 길을 나서는 것 때문에 하나님이 크게 노하셨다. 주님의 천사가 그의 대적자가 되어서, 길에 서서 가로막았다. 발람은 자기 나귀를 탄 채로 있었고, 그의 두 종이 그와 함께 있었다. 23 나귀는 주님의 천사가 칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것을 보고, 길을 벗어나 밭으로 들어갔다. 발람은 나귀를 때려 다시 길로 들어서게 하였다. 24 그러자 주님의 천사가 이번에는 두 포도원 사이의 좁은 길을 막아섰다. 길 이쪽에도 담이 있고, 길 저쪽에도 담이 있었다. 25 나귀는 주님의 천사를 보자, 이쪽 벽으로 몸을 바짝 붙여, 발람의 발을 벽에 긁히게 하였다. 그러자 발람이 나귀를 한 대 더 때렸다. 26 그 때에 주님의 천사가 앞으로 더 나아가, 오른쪽으로도 왼쪽으로도 피할 수 없는 좁은 곳에 섰다. 27 나귀는 주님의 천사를 보고는, 발람을 태운 채로 주저앉았다. 발람은 화가 나서 지팡이로 나귀를 때렸다. 28 그 때에 주님께서 그 나귀의 입을 여시니, 그 나귀가 발람에게 말하였다. “제가 주인 어른께 무슨 잘못을 하였기에, 저를 이렇게 세 번씩이나 때리십니까?” 29 발람이 나귀에게 대답하였다. “너는 나를 놀림감으로 여기느냐? 내가 칼을 가지고 있었더라면, 이 자리에서 너를 죽였을 것이다.” 30 나귀가 발람에게 말하였다. “저야말로 오늘까지 어른께서 늘 타시던 어른의 나귀가 아닙니까? 제가 언제 이처럼 버릇없이 군 적이 있었습니까?” 발람이 대답하였다. “없었다.” 31 그 때에 주님께서 발람의 두 눈을 열어 주셨다. 그제야 그는, 주님의 천사가 칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것을 보았다. 발람은 머리를 숙이고 엎드렸다. 32 주님의 천사가 그에게 물었다. “너는 왜 너의 나귀를 이렇게 세 번씩이나 때리느냐? 네가 가서는 안 될 길이기에 너를 막으려고 이렇게 왔다. 33 나귀는 나를 보고, 나에게서 세 번이나 비켜섰다. 다행히 나귀가 비켜섰기에 망정이지, 그렇지 않았더라면 내가, 나귀는 살렸겠지만, 너는 분명히 죽였을 것이다.” 34 발람이 주님의 천사에게 말하였다. “제가 잘못하였습니다. 천사께서 저를 만나시려고 길에 서 계신 것을 몰랐습니다. 제가 가는 것이 잘못이면, 저는 되돌아가겠습니다.” 35 주님의 천사가 발람에게 말하였다. “저 사람들하고 같이 가거라. 그러나 너는 내가 말해 주는 것만 말하여라.” 그리하여 발람은 발락이 보낸 고관들과 함께 갔다.

발락이 발람을 환영하다

36  발락은 발람이 오고 있다는 소식을 듣고, 그를 맞이하러, 그의 영토가 끝나는 아르논 강 경계에 있는 모압의 한 성읍까지 나아갔다. 37 발락은 발람에게 말하였다. “내가 당신을 불러오려고 사신을 보내고 또 보내지 않았습니까? 어찌하여 곧바로 나에게 오지 않으셨습니까? 내가 당신을 존귀하게 대접할 능력이 없다고 생각하셨습니까?” 38 발람이 발락에게 대답하였다. “보십시오, 이렇게 제가 임금님께 왔습니다. 그러나 제가 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까? 하나님이 저의 입에 넣어 주시는 말씀, 그것이 무엇이든지, 저는 그것만을 말하겠습니다.” 39 발람은 발락과 함께 갔다. 그들은 후솟 마을까지 갔다. 40 발락은 소와 양을 잡아 제사를 드리고, 발람과 그를 데리고 온 고관들에게 고기 얼마를 보내 주었다.

발람의 첫 번째 예언

41 다음날 아침이 되니, 발락은 발람을 데리고 바알 산당으로 올라갔다. 거기에서 발람은 이스라엘 백성이 친 진의 끝부분을 보았다.
