Numbers 23

1 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go: peradventure Jehovah will come to meet me; and whatsoever he showeth me I will tell thee. And he went to a bare height.4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.5 And Jehovah put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.7 And he took up his parable, and said, From Aram hath Balak brought me, The king of Moab from the mountains of the East: Come, curse me Jacob, And come, defy Israel.8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? And how shall I defy, whom Jehovah hath not defied?9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, And from the hills I behold him: Lo, it is a people that dwelleth alone, And shall not be reckoned among the nations.10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, Or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, And let my last end be like his!11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which Jehovah putteth in my mouth?

13 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them; thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.14 And he took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.15 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I meet Jehovah yonder.16 And Jehovah met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus shalt thou speak.17 And he came to him, and, lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath Jehovah spoken?18 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; Hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:

19 God is not a man, that he should lie, Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and will he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and will he not make it good?

20 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: And he hath blessed, and I cannot reverse it.

21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob; Neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: Jehovah his God is with him, And the shout of a king is among them.

22 God bringeth them forth out of Egypt; He hath as it were the strength of the wild-ox.

23 Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob; Neither is there any divination with Israel: Now shalt it be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

24 Behold, the people riseth up as a lioness, And as a lion doth he lift himself up: He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, And drink the blood of the slain.

25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that Jehovah speaketh, that I must do?27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come now, I will take thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.28 And Balak took Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh down upon the desert.29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

민수기 23

1  발람이 발락에게 말하였다. “저에게 필요하니, 이 곳에다가 제단 일곱을 만들어 주시기 바랍니다. 그리고 저에게 필요하니, 이 곳에다가 수송아지 일곱 마리와 숫양 일곱 마리를 준비하여 주시기 바랍니다.” 2 그리하여 발락은, 발람이 말한 대로 하였다. 발락과 발람은 제단마다 수송아지와 숫양을 한 마리씩 바쳤다. 3 발람이 발락에게 말하였다. “임금님께서는 제물 곁에 서 계시기 바랍니다. 저는 가볼 데가 있습니다. 어쩌면 주님께서 저를 만나러 오실지도 모르겠습니다. 주님께서 저에게 밝히 나타내 주시는 것이면, 어떤 말씀이든지 제가 임금님께 말씀드리겠습니다.” 그러면서 발람은 오솔길을 걸어갔다. 4 하나님이 발람에게 나타나셨다. 발람이 하나님께 아뢰었다. “일곱 제단을 제가 준비하였습니다. 그리고 각 제단마다 수송아지와 숫양을 한 마리씩 바쳤습니다.” 5 주님께서는 발람의 입에 말씀을 넣어 주시면서, 발락에게로 돌아가서 그대로 말하라고 하셨다. 6 발람이 발락에게로 돌아와서 보니, 발락이 번제물 곁에 그대로 서 있었다. 모압 고관들도 모두 그와 함께 있었다. 7 발람이 예언을 선포하였다. “발락이 나를 t시리아에서 데려왔다. 모압의 왕이 나를 동쪽 산골에서 데려왔다. 와서, 자기에게 유리하게 야곱을 저주하라 하고 와서 이스라엘을 규탄하라 하였지만,

8 하나님이 저주하지 않으시는데, 내가 어떻게 저주하며, 주님께서 꾸짖지 않으시는데, 내가 어떻게 꾸짖으랴!

9 바위 산꼭대기에서 나는 그들을 내려다본다. 언덕 위에서 나는 그들을 굽어본다. 홀로 사는 저 백성을 보아라. 그들 스스로도 자신들을 여느 민족들 가운데 하나라고 생각하지는 않는다.

10 티끌처럼 많은 야곱의 자손을 누가 셀 수 있겠느냐? t먼지처럼 많은 이스라엘의 자손을 누가 셀 수 있겠느냐? 나는 정직한 사람이 죽듯이 죽기를 바란다. 나의 마지막이 정직한 사람의 마지막과 같기를 바란다.”

11  발락이 발람에게 말하였다. “지금 무엇을 하고 있는 거요? 대적들을 저주해 달라고 당신을 데려왔습니다. 그런데 당신은 그들에게 복을 빌어 주었습니다!” 12 발람이 대답하였다. “주님께서 나의 입에 넣어 주시는 말씀을 말하지 말란 말입니까?”

발람의 두 번째 예언

19 하나님은 사람이 아니시다. 거짓말을 하지 아니하신다. 사람의 아들이 아니시니, 변덕을 부리지도 아니하신다. 어찌 말씀하신 대로 하지 아니하시랴? 어찌 약속하신 것을 이루지 아니하시랴?

20 나는 축복하라 하시는 명을 받았다. 주님께서 복을 베푸셨으니, 내가 그것을 바꿀 수 없다.

21 주님께서는 야곱에게서 아무런 죄도 찾지 못하셨다. 주님께서는 이스라엘에게서 어떤 잘못도 발견하지 못하셨다. 그들의 주 하나님이 그들과 함께 계신다. 주님을 임금으로 떠받드는 소리가 그들에게서 들린다.

22 하나님이 그들을 이집트에서 이끌어 내셨다. 그에게는 들소와 같은 힘이 있다.

23  야곱에 맞설 마술은 없다. 이스라엘에 맞설 술법도 없다. 이제는 사람들이 야곱과 이스라엘에게 물을 것이다. ‘하나님이 하신 일이 어찌 그리 크냐?’고.

24 보아라, 그 백성이 암사자처럼 일어난다. 그들이 수사자처럼 우뚝 선다. 짐승을 잡아 먹지 아니하고는 짐승을 찔러 그 피를 마시지 아니하고는 눕지 아니할 것이다.”

25  발락이 발람에게 말하였다. “그들에게 저주도 빌지 말고, 그들에게 복도 빌지 마시오!” 26 발람이 발락에게 이렇게 대답하였다. “무엇이든 주님께서 내게 말씀하신 것만을 말하겠다고, 내가 말씀드리지 않았습니까?”
