Numbers 3
1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Jehovah spake with Moses in mount Sinai.2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.4 And Nadab and Abihu died before Jehovah, when they offered strange fire before Jehovah, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.
5 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him.7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him on the behalf of the children of Israel.10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
11 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,12 And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the first-born that openeth the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine:13 for all the first-born are mine; on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast; mine they shall be: I am Jehovah.
14 And Jehovah spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,15 Number the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.16 And Moses numbered them according to the word of Jehovah, as he was commanded.17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.19 And the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.20 And the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses.
21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites: these are the families of the Gershonites.22 Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.23 The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the tabernacle westward.24 And the prince of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael.25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting,26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
27 And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.28 According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp on the side of the tabernacle southward.30 And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.31 And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the screen, and all the service thereof.32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.
33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari.34 And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred.35 And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall encamp on the side of the tabernacle northward.36 And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all the service thereof,37 and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.
38 And those that encamp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.39 All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Jehovah, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.
40 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am Jehovah) instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel:42 and Moses numbered, as Jehovah commanded him, all the first-born among the children of Israel.43 And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.
44 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,45 Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Jehovah.46 And for the redemption of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel, that are over and above the number of the Levites,47 thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs):48 and thou shalt give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is redeemed, unto Aaron and to his sons.49 And Moses took the redemption-money from them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites;50 from the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money, a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:51 and Moses gave the redemption-money unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of Jehovah, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

아론의 아들들
1 주님께서 시내 산에서 모세에게 말씀하시던 때에, 아론과 모세에게 아들들이 있었다. 2 아론의 아들들의 이름은, 맏아들은 나답이요, 다음은 아비후와 엘르아살과 이다말이다. 3 그들은, 아론의 아들들로서 제사장의 임무를 맡도록, 기름부어 제사장으로 거룩하게 구별된 사람들이다. 4 나답과 아비후는, 시내 광야에서 주님께 금지된 불을 드리다가 주님 앞에서 죽었는데, 아들이 없이 죽었기 때문에, 엘르아살과 이다말만이 그들의 아버지 아론 앞에서 제사장 일을 맡아 하였다.
제사장을 돕는 레위 사람
5 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 6 “너는 레위 지파를 불러내어, 그들을 제사장 아론 밑에 두고 그를 돕게 하여라. 7 레위 지파 사람은 성막에서 봉사하는 사람들로서, 아론과 온 회중이 회막 앞에서 제사를 드릴 때에, 그 일을 돌볼 사람들이다. 8 그들은 성막에서 봉사하는 사람들로서, 회막 안에 있는 모든 기구를 보살피고, 이스라엘 자손이 해야 할 일을 돌보아야 한다. 9 너는 레위 사람을 아론과 그 아들들에게 맡겨라. 그들은 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 뽑혀, 아론에게 아주 맡겨진 사람들이다. 10 너는 아론과 그의 아들들을 제사장으로 임명하여, 그 직무를 맡아 보게 하여라. 다른 사람이 성소에 가까이하였다가는 죽을 것이다.”
11 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 12 “나는 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 레위 사람을 택하여, 처음 태어나는 모든 맏아들, 곧 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 태를 처음 열고 나오는 사람을 대신하게 하였다. 레위 사람은 나의 것이다. 13 처음 난 것은 모두 나의 것이기 때문이다. 내가 이집트 땅에서 첫 번째로 난 모든 것을 칠 때에, 사람이든지 짐승이든지, 이스라엘에서 처음 난 것은 모두 거룩하게 구별하여 나의 것으로 삼았다. 나는 주다.”
레위 사람 인구조사
14 주님께서 시내 광야에서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 15 “너는 레위 자손을 가족별, 가문별로 등록시켜라. 그들 가운데서 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 남자는 모두 등록시켜라.” 16 모세는 주님의 명을 따라, 지시받은 대로 그들을 등록시켰다. 17 레위의 아들들의 이름은 게르손과 고핫과 므라리이다. 18 게르손의 아들들의 이름은, 가문별로는 립니와 시므이이다. 19 고핫의 아들들은, 가문별로는 아므람과 이스할과 헤브론과 웃시엘이다. 20 므라리의 아들들은, 가문별로는 마흘리와 무시이다.
레위의 가족들을 가문별로 들어 보면 다음과 같다.

게르손에게서는 립니 자손 가족과 시므이 자손 가족이 나왔다. 이들이 게르손 자손의 가족들이다. 22 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 남자를 등록시키니, 모두 칠천오백 명이었다. 23 게르손 자손의 가족들은 성막 뒤 서쪽에 진을 치게 되어 있었다. 24 게르손 자손 가문의 원로는 라엘의 아들 엘리아삽이다. 25 게르손 자손이 회막에서 맡은 일은, 성막과 장막과 그 덮개와 회막 어귀에 치는 휘장과 26 뜰의 휘장과 성막과 그 가운데 제단을 둘러싼 뜰의 어귀에 치는 휘장과 이 모든 것에 쓰는 여러 가지 줄들을 보살피는 것이다.

고핫에게서는 아므람 자손 가족과 이스할 자손 가족과 헤브론 자손 가족과 웃시엘 자손 가족이 나왔다. 이들이 고핫 자손의 가족들이다. 28 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 남자의 수는 모두 팔천육백 명이다. 이들은 성소의 일을 맡았다. 29 고핫 자손의 가족들은 성막의 남쪽에 진을 치게 되어 있었다. 30 고핫 가문 가족의 원로는 웃시엘의 아들 엘리사반이다. 31 그들의 임무는 t법궤와 상과 등잔대와 제단들과 제사드릴 때에 쓰는 거룩한 도구들과 휘장과, 이것들에 관련된 모든 예식을 보살피는 것이다. 32 레위 사람의 최고 원로는 제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살이고, 그는 성소의 일을 맡은 이들을 감독하는 책임을 맡았다.

므라리에게서는 마흘리 자손 가족과 무시 자손 가족이 나왔다. 이들이 므라리의 가족들이다. 34 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 남자를 등록시키니, 모두 육천이백 명이다. 35 므라리 자손 가문의 원로는 아비하일의 아들 수리엘이다. 그들은 성막 북쪽에 진을 치게 되어 있었다. 36 므라리 자손에게 부여된 임무는, 성막의 널빤지들과 가로다지들과 기둥들과 밑받침들과 거기에 딸린 모든 기구와, 이것들에 관련된 모든 예식을 보살피는 것이다. 37 이 밖에도, 뜰 둘레에 세우는 기둥들과 밑받침들과 말뚝들과 여러 가지 줄들을 보살피는 일이 있다.

모세와 아론과 아론의 아들들은 성막 앞, 곧 회막 정면, 해 뜨는 동쪽에 진을 치게 되어 있었다. 그들은 이스라엘 자손의 직무를 대신하여 성소에서 직무를 맡은 이들이다. 여느 사람이 가까이 갔다가는 죽었다. 39 등록된 모든 레위 사람, 곧 주님께서 분부하신 대로, 모세와 아론이 가족별로 등록시킨 사람들은, 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 남자들인데, 모두 t이만 이천 명이었다.
레위 사람이 맏아들 구실을 하다
40 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이스라엘 자손 가운데서, 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 맏아들은 모두 등록시키고, 명단을 작성하여라. 41 나는 주다. 너는 이스라엘 자손의 모든 맏아들 대신 레위 사람을 구별하여 세우고, 또 이스라엘 자손의 모든 가축 맏배 대신 레위 사람의 가축 맏배를 구별하여 세워서, 나의 몫으로 삼아라.” 42 모세는, 주님께서 자기에게 명하신 대로, 이스라엘 자손 가운데 있는 모든 맏아들을 다 등록시켰다. 43 태어난 지 한 달이 넘은 이들로서, 명단에 등록된 맏아들은 모두 이만 이천이백칠십삼 명이었다.
44 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. 45 “너는 이스라엘 자손의 모든 맏아들 대신 레위 사람을 구별하여 세우고, 이스라엘 자손의 가축 맏배 대신 레위 사람의 가축 맏배를 구별하여 세워라. 레위 사람은 나의 몫이다. 나는 주다. 46 이스라엘 자손의 맏아들은, 그 수효가 레위 사람보다 이백칠십삼 명이 더 많으므로, 나머지 사람은 그 수만큼 속전, 곧 물어 내는 값을 치러야 한다. 47 한 사람에 오 세겔씩 물도록 하여라. 세겔은 성소에서 따르는 방식대로 이십 게라를 한 세겔로 계산하여라. 48 그 돈은, 아론과 그 아들들에게 주어서, 나머지 사람을 물어내기 위하여 치른 속전으로 삼아라.” 49 그리하여 모세는 레위 사람을 대신 세워 속하고, 그 나머지 사람에게서 속전을 거두었다. 50 그가 이스라엘 자손의 맏아들에게서 거둔 속전은 성소의 세겔로 천삼백육십오 세겔이었다. 51 주님께서 말씀하신 대로, 모세는 그 속전을 아론과 그의 아들들에게 주었다. 모세는 이처럼 주님께서 명하신 대로 하였다.
