2 Kings 2

1 And it came to pass, when Jehovah would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me as far as Beth-el. And Elisha said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el.3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to the Jordan. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood over against them afar off: and they two stood by the Jordan.8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I am taken from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof! And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan.14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is Jehovah, the God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they were divided hither and thither; and Elisha went over.

15 And when the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho over against him saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there are with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master, lest the Spirit of Jehovah hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.18 And they came back to him, while he tarried at Jericho; and he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?

19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, we pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is bad, and the land miscarrieth.20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast salt therein, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or miscarrying.22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spake.

23 And he went up from thence unto Beth-el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth young lads out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou baldhead; go up, thou baldhead.24 And he looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Jehovah. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two lads of them.25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

Elia wordt door God opgenomen

1-2 Het tijdstip naderde waarop de HERE Elia met behulp van een wervelwind in de hemel zou opnemen. Bij hun vertrek uit Gilgal zei Elia tegen Elisa: ‘Blijf hier, want ik moet van de HERE naar Betel gaan.’ Maar Elisa antwoordde: ‘Ik zweer bij God dat ik u niet zal verlaten!’ Dus gingen zij samen op weg naar Betel.3 Daar kwamen de jonge profeten uit Betel hen tegemoet en vroegen Elisa: ‘Weet u dat de HERE Elia vandaag van u zal wegnemen?’ ‘Stil maar,’ zei Elisa, ‘ik weet het.’4 Toen zei Elia tegen Elisa: ‘Blijf maar hier in Betel, want de HERE stuurt mij nu naar Jericho.’ Maar opnieuw zei Elisa: ‘Ik zweer bij God dat ik u niet zal verlaten.’ En zo gingen zij samen naar Jericho.5 Ook in Jericho zeiden de jonge profeten tegen Elisa: ‘Weet u dat de HERE Elia vandaag van u zal wegnemen?’ En Elisa antwoordde: ‘Stil maar, ik weet het.’6-7 Elia zei tegen Elisa: ‘Blijf nu maar hier, want de HERE wil dat ik naar de Jordaan ga.’ Maar net als de vorige keren zei Elisa: ‘Ik zweer bij God dat ik u niet zal verlaten.’ Zij gingen samen op weg en stonden na enige tijd bij de Jordaan. Van een afstand keken vijftig jonge profeten naar wat ging gebeuren.

8 Toen vouwde Elia zijn mantel op en sloeg daarmee op het water. De rivier spleet in tweeën en zij liepen over het droge naar de overkant.
9 Aan de overkant gekomen, zei Elia tegen Elisa: ‘Welke wens van je zal ik vervullen, voordat ik word weggenomen?’ Elisa antwoordde: ‘Laat mij twee keer zo wijs zijn als u.’10 ‘Je hebt iets heel moeilijks gevraagd,’ zei Elia. ‘Als je mij ziet wanneer ik word weggenomen, zal je wens worden vervuld. Zo niet, dan gebeurt het niet.’11 Terwijl zij al pratend verder liepen, verscheen opeens een vurige strijdwagen, getrokken door paarden van vuur, die tussen hen door reed en hen van elkaar scheidde. Tegelijkertijd werd Elia door een wervelwind in de strijdwagen naar de hemel gedragen.12 Elisa zag het gebeuren en schreeuwde: ‘Mijn vader! Mijn vader! De Wagens en Ruiters van Israël!’ Toen Elia uit het zicht was verdwenen, scheurde Elisa zijn kleren in tweeën.

13-14 Daarna raapte hij Elia’s mantel op, ging terug naar de oever van de Jordaan en sloeg met de mantel op het water. ‘Waar is de HERE, de God van Elia?’ riep hij luid. Toen week het water uiteen en Elisa liep naar de overkant.

15 Toen de jonge profeten uit Jericho zagen wat er was gebeurd, riepen zij: ‘De geest van Elia rust op Elisa!’ Zij gingen hem tegemoet en bogen voor hem neer.
16 ‘Heer,’ zeiden zij, ‘u hoeft maar één woord te zeggen en vijftig flinke mannen onder ons zullen dit hele gebied uitkammen om uw meester te vinden. Misschien heeft de Geest van de HERE hem op een berg of in een van de dalen neergezet.’ ‘Nee,’ antwoordde Elisa, ‘doe geen moeite.’17 Maar zij bleven net zolang aandringen tot hij niet meer kon weigeren en zei: ‘Goed, ga dan maar zoeken.’ De vijftig mannen zochten drie dagen lang, maar konden hem niet vinden.

18 Elisa was nog steeds in Jericho toen zij terugkwamen. ‘Heb ik jullie niet gezegd dat het geen zin had?’ was het enige dat hij zei.
19 De burgers van de stad zeiden tegen Elisa: ‘Wij hebben een probleem: de stad ligt gunstig, zoals u wel zult hebben gezien. Het water is echter slecht en de grond veroorzaakt misgeboorten.’20 Daarop zei hij: ‘Breng mij een nieuwe schaal, gevuld met zout.’ Zij brachten hem het gevraagde.21 Hij liep naar de bron van de stad, gooide het zout erin en zei: ‘Zo spreekt de HERE: Ik maak dit water gezond. Het zal niet langer dood of onvruchtbaarheid veroorzaken.’

22 Het water werd inderdaad gereinigd, precies zoals Elisa had gezegd.
23 Vanuit Jericho ging hij naar Betel. Terwijl hij over de weg liep, scholden enkele kleine jongens uit de stad hem uit en riepen: ‘Vlieg op, kaalkop! Vlieg op, kaalkop!’24 Hij draaide zich om en vervloekte hen in de naam van de HERE. Onmiddellijk kwamen twee beren uit de bossen tevoorschijn en doodden tweeënveertig kinderen.

25 Elisa ging van daaruit naar de berg Karmel, waarna hij terugging naar Samaria.
