Acts 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake that a great multitude both of Jews and of Greeks believed.2 But the Jews that were disobedient stirred up the souls of the Gentiles, and made them evil affected against the brethren.3 Long time therefore they tarried there speaking boldly in the Lord, who bare witness unto the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.4 But the multitude of the city was divided; and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.5 And when there was made an onset both of the Gentiles and of the Jews with their rulers, to treat them shamefully and to stone them,6 they became aware of it, and fled unto the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the region round about:7 and there they preached the gospel.8 And at Lystra there sat a certain man, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.9 The same heard Paul speaking, who, fastening eyes upon him, and seeing that he had faith to be made whole,10 said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped up and walked.11 And when the multitude saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker.13 And the priest of Jupiter whose temple was before the city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the multitudes.14 But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they rent their garments, and sprang forth among the multitude, crying out15 and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good tidings, that ye should turn from these vain things unto a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:16 who in the generations gone by suffered all the nations to walk in their own ways.17 And yet He left not himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you from heaven rains and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the multitudes from doing sacrifice unto them.19 But there came Jews thither from Antioch and Iconium: and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.20 But as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and entered into the city: and on the morrow he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe.21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch,22 confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.23 And when they had appointed for them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they had believed.24 And they passed through Pisidia, and came to Pamphylia.25 And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia;26 and thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been committed to the grace of God for the work which they had fulfilled.27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all things that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith unto the Gentiles.28 And they tarried no little time with the disciples.

De genezing van een verlamde

1 De volgende plaats waar Paulus en Barnabas kwamen, was Ikonium. Toen zij daar waren, gingen ze samen naar de synagoge. Ze spraken daar zo overtuigend dat veel Joden en niet-Joden in Jezus Christus gingen geloven.2 Maar ook daar waren weer Joden die niets van hen wilden weten. Die zaaiden onrust onder de niet-Joden en zetten hen op tegen Paulus en Barnabas.3 De twee mannen trokken zich er niet veel van aan en bleven nog een hele tijd in de stad. Zij spraken vrijuit over Jezus Christus en de Here bevestigde wat zij zeiden door hen bijzondere dingen en vele wonderen te laten doen.

4 De stad raakte in twee kampen verdeeld. Sommigen waren voor de Joden, anderen voor de apostelen.
5 Op een gegeven ogenblik liepen een heleboel mensen, zowel Joden met hun leiders als niet-Joden, opgewonden te hoop om voorgoed met de apostelen af te rekenen en hen te stenigen.6 Toen Paulus en Barnabas dat hoorden, vluchtten zij voor hun leven.

7 Ze gingen naar de landstreek Lykaonië, naar Lystra en Derbe, en spraken ook daar weer over Jezus Christus.
8 In Lystra zat een man op straat die zijn voeten niet kon gebruiken. Hij was al sinds zijn geboorte verlamd en had nooit kunnen lopen.9 Terwijl Paulus sprak, zat de man aandachtig te luisteren. Paulus keek hem eens goed aan en zag dat hij het geloof had om genezen te worden.10 ‘Sta op!’ riep hij hem toe. ‘Ga recht op uw voeten staan!’ De man sprong op en begon te lopen.11 Er steeg een luid gejuich op onder de mensen die erbij stonden. ‘De goden!’ riepen zij in hun eigen taal. ‘De goden zijn in mensengedaante naar ons toegekomen!’12 Zij noemden Barnabas Zeus en Paulus Hermes, omdat hij de mensen had toegesproken.13 De priester van de Zeus-tempel, die buiten de stad stond, bracht zelfs stieren en bloemenkransen bij de poort, want hij en de mensen wilden Barnabas en Paulus offers brengen.14 Maar toen die dat hoorden, schrokken zij. Zij scheurden van ontzetting hun kleren en renden naar de mensen toe.15 ‘Mannen!’ schreeuwden zij. ‘Wat bent u van plan? Wij zijn maar gewone mensen, net als u! Wij hebben goed nieuws voor u: keer u af van die waardeloze goden, u moet de levende God vereren! Hij heeft de hemel, de aarde en de zee gemaakt en alles wat daarin is.16 Tot nu toe heeft Hij alle volken hun gang laten gaan.17 Maar toch heeft Hij Zich nooit onbetuigd gelaten. Altijd waren er bewijzen van zijn goedheid: regen en goede oogsten, zodat wij naar hartelust konden eten en genieten.’

18 De mensen hadden zich zo vast voorgenomen Barnabas en Paulus offers te brengen, dat die er met moeite in slaagden hen dit uit het hoofd te praten.
19 Maar de stemming in de stad sloeg om, toen er Joden uit Antiochië en Ikonium kwamen die veel kwaad over de apostelen vertelden. De mensen werden vijandig en gooiden stenen naar Paulus, die zo zwaar getroffen werd dat zij dachten dat hij dood was. Daarom sleepten ze hem de stad uit.20 Maar toen de christenen om hem heen kwamen staan, stond hij op en liep de stad binnen. De volgende morgen vertrok hij met Barnabas naar Derbe en21 bracht daar het goede nieuws van Jezus Christus. Nadat ze in Derbe vele mensen voor de Here hadden gewonnen, gingen ze terug naar Lystra, Ikonium en Antiochië22 en bemoedigden de christenen daar. Zij spoorden hen aan in Jezus Christus te blijven geloven, ondanks de vervolgingen. ‘Want,’ zeiden zij, ‘voordat wij in het Koninkrijk van God komen, moeten wij nu eenmaal veel moeilijkheden doormaken.’

23 Ook wezen zij in elk van de christengemeenten leiders aan. Terwijl zij vastten, baden ze voor hen en vertrouwden hen toe aan God.
24 Paulus en Barnabas reisden door Pisidië en Pamfylië in de richting van de havenstad Attalia.25 Daarbij kwamen ze ook in Perge en spraken er over Jezus Christus.26 In Attalia gingen zij aan boord van een schip dat hen naar Antiochië in Syrië zou brengen. Nu zij hun taak hadden afgerond, gingen zij terug naar de stad waar zij aan hun reis waren begonnen. Daar hadden zij, samen met de andere leiders van de christengemeente, God gevraagd hen onder zijn hoede te nemen, zodat zij konden doen wat Hij hun had opgedragen.27 Toen ze in Antiochië aankwamen, riepen zij de christenen bijeen en vertelden hun wat God allemaal had gedaan. God had nu ook niet-Joden de mogelijkheid gegeven in Jezus Christus te geloven.

28 Paulus en Barnabas bleven nog een hele tijd bij de christenen in Antiochië.
