Acts 26

1 And Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth his hand, and made his defence:2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, that I am to make my defense before thee this day touching all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews:3 especially because thou art expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.4 My manner of life then from my youth up, which was from the beginning among mine own nation and at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;5 having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.6 And now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers;7 unto which promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. And concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, O king!8 Why is it judged incredible with you, if God doth raise the dead?9 I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.10 And this I also did in Jerusalem: and I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them.11 And punishing them oftentimes in all the synagogues, I strove to make them blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities.12 Whereupon as I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,13 at midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them that journeyed with me.14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying unto me in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the goad.15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.16 But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee;17 delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee,18 to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me.19 Wherefore, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:20 but declared both to them of Damascus first and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.21 For this cause the Jews seized me in the temple, and assayed to kill me.22 Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand unto this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses did say should come;23 how that the Christ must suffer, and how that he first by the resurrection of the dead should proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles.24 And as he thus made his defense, Festus saith with a loud voice, Paul, thou art mad; thy much learning is turning thee mad.25 But Paul saith, I am not mad, most excellent Festus; but speak forth words of truth and soberness.26 For the king knoweth of these things, unto whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him; for this hath not been done in a corner.27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.28 And Agrippa said unto Paul, With but little persuasion thou wouldest fain make me a Christian.29 And Paul said, I would to God, that whether with little or with much, not thou only, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except these bonds.30 And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:31 and when they had withdrawn, they spake one to another, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.32 And Agrippa said unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

Paulus verschijnt voor koning Agrippa

1 Agrippa zei tegen Paulus: ‘Ga uw gang. U mag voor uzelf spreken.’ Paulus stak zijn hand op en verdedigde zich met deze woorden:2 ‘Ik ben blij, koning Agrippa, dat ik mij vandaag voor u mag verdedigen tegen alles waarvan de Joden mij beschuldigen.

3 U bent zeer goed op de hoogte van de gebruiken en geschilpunten onder hen. Wilt u daarom zo vriendelijk zijn mij geduldig aan te horen?
4 Alle Joden weten hoe ik heb geleefd. Zij kennen mij van jongsaf aan. Ik heb mijn opvoeding eerst in Tarsus en later in Jeruzalem genoten.5 Het is hun bekend dat ik van mijn jeugd af heb geleefd volgens de regels van de Farizese partij, de strengste richting van onze godsdienst. Als zij dat nu maar wilden toegeven.

6 Nu sta ik hier terecht omdat ik verwacht dat God zal doen wat Hij onze voorouders heeft beloofd.
7 De twaalf stammen van Israël verwachten dat ook en dienen God daarom heel serieus, dag en nacht. Maar koning Agrippa, ik word ervoor vervolgd!8 Waarom kan niemand hier geloven dat God doden levend maakt?9 Ik heb vroeger zelf ook gemeend al het mogelijke te moeten doen om de verspreiding van de naam van Jezus van Nazareth tegen te gaan.10 Met toestemming van de leidende priesters heb ik in Jeruzalem vele van zijn volgelingen gevangen gezet. En als tegen hen de doodstraf werd geëist, stemde ik daar altijd mee in.11 Ik ging alle synagogen binnen. Als ik daar christenen vond, probeerde ik hen vaak met geweld te dwingen Jezus te vervloeken. Door een diepe haat gedreven, vervolgde ik hen zelfs tot in het buitenland.

12 Zo ging ik ook naar Damascus, met toestemming van de leidende priesters. Zij hadden mij de bevoegdheid gegeven namens hen op te treden.
13 Onderweg zag ik midden op de dag een licht, koning Agrippa, helderder dan de zon! Het omstraalde mij en de mannen die met mij meereisden.14 Wij vielen allemaal op de grond en ik hoorde iemand in het Hebreeuws tegen mij zeggen: “Saul, Saul! Waarom vervolgt u Mij? U doet alleen uzelf maar pijn, net als een os trapt tegen de stok die hem voortdrijft.”15 “Wie bent U, Here?” vroeg ik.16 En de Here antwoordde: “Ik ben Jezus, die u vervolgt. Maar kom, sta op. Ik heb Mij aan u vertoond om u in dienst te nemen. U moet de mensen vertellen wat u vandaag van Mij hebt gezien en wat Ik u nog zal laten zien.17 Ik zal u bevrijden uit de handen van uw eigen volk en van de vreemde volken waar Ik u heen zal sturen.18 U zult hen de ogen openen voor de toestand waarin zij verkeren, opdat zij zich van het duister naar het licht zullen keren en zich door God zullen laten regeren in plaats van door Satan. Door hun geloof in Mij zullen zij vergeving van hun zonden krijgen en zullen zij deel krijgen aan mijn Koninkrijk, samen met de mensen die bij Mij horen.”

19 Nu, koning Agrippa, ik heb gedaan wat mij in dat hemelse visioen is gezegd.
20 Ik ging eerst naar Damascus, toen naar Jeruzalem en heel Judea en daarna naar andere landen. Overal waar ik kwam, heb ik de mensen opgeroepen tot bekering, tot een leven met God, wat ook uit hun doen en laten zou moeten blijken.21 Dat was de reden waarom de Joden mij in de tempel gevangen namen en daarna probeerden te vermoorden.22 Maar God heeft mij geholpen, zodat ik vandaag in levende lijve voor u sta. Ik vertel groot en klein niets anders dan wat Mozes en de profeten hebben voorspeld.

23 Namelijk dat de Christus zou lijden en als eerste uit de dood zou terugkomen om te vertellen dat het reddende Licht voor Joden en niet-Joden schijnt.’
24 Terwijl Paulus met zijn verdediging bezig was, riep Festus ineens: ‘Het is u in uw hoofd geslagen, Paulus! Al dat gestudeer heeft u gek gemaakt!’25 Maar Paulus antwoordde: ‘Ik weet precies wat ik zeg, excellentie. Wat ik heb gezegd, is waar, zonder enige overdrijving.26 De koning begrijpt wel wat ik bedoel. Met hem kan ik er open en eerlijk over spreken. Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat al deze dingen aan zijn aandacht zijn ontsnapt. Zij zijn per slot van rekening niet ergens in een uithoek gebeurd.

27 Koning Agrippa! Gelooft u de profeten? Ja, ik weet dat u ze gelooft!’
28 ‘Wacht eens even,’ zei Agrippa. ‘U denkt toch niet dat u zomaar even een christen van mij kunt maken?’

29 ‘Ik zou God wel willen vragen,’ antwoordde Paulus, ‘of niet alleen u, maar ook ieder die mij nu hoort, vroeg of laat zo zal worden als ik, zonder deze boeien natuurlijk.’
30 De koning, de gouverneur, Bernice en alle anderen stonden op en verlieten de aula.31 Toen zij buiten waren, zeiden zij tegen elkaar: ‘Die man heeft niets gedaan waarop doodstraf of gevangenisstraf staat.’

32 En de koning zei nog tegen Festus: ‘Als hij zich niet op de keizer beroepen had, zou hij nu vrij man zijn.’
