Acts 8

1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.2 And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.3 But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.4 They therefore that were scattered abroad, went about preaching the word.5 And Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and proclaimed unto them the Christ.6 And the multitudes gave heed with one accord unto the things that were spoken by Philip, when they heard, and saw the signs which he did.7 For from many of those that had unclean spirits, they came out, crying with a loud voice: and many that were palsied, and that were lame, were healed.8 And there was much joy in that city.9 But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who beforetime in the city used sorcery, and amazed the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that power of God which is called Great.11 And they gave heed to him, because that of long time he had amazed them with his sorceries.12 But when they believed Philip preaching good tidings concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.13 And Simon also himself believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs and great miracles wrought, he was amazed.14 Now when the apostles that were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:15 who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:16 for as yet it was fallen upon none of them: only they had been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.18 Now when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,19 saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.20 But Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money.21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right before God.22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.23 For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.24 And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.25 They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.26 But an angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza: the same is desert.27 And he arose and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship;28 and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.29 And the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.30 And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?31 And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.32 Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before his shearer is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: His generation who shall declare? For his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other?35 And Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached unto him Jesus.36 And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Steeds meer volgelingen van Jezus in Samaria

1 Saulus was het helemaal eens met het vonnis over Stefanus. Vanaf die dag kwamen de volgelingen van Jezus in Jeruzalem onder zware druk te staan. Zij werden zo hevig vervolgd dat zij moesten vluchten naar Judea en Samaria. Alleen de apostelen bleven nog in de stad.2 Enkele gelovige mannen begroeven Stefanus en rouwden over hem.

3 Saulus deed zijn uiterste best de volgelingen van Jezus uit te roeien. Hij drong, niets en niemand ontziend, hun huizen binnen, sleurde mannen en vrouwen naar buiten en zette hen in de gevangenis.
4 De volgelingen die uiteengejaagd waren, spraken overal over Jezus en vertelden wat Hij had gedaan.5 Filippus bijvoorbeeld, ging naar de stad Samaria en vertelde dat Jezus de Christus is.6 De mensen die naar hem luisterden en zagen welke buitengewone dingen hij deed, hielden zich aan wat hij zei.7 Boze geesten gingen, onder luid geschreeuw, weg uit de vele mensen die er last van hadden. Vele lammen en kreupelen werden genezen.

8 Het was dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat er grote vreugde in de stad heerste.
9 In de stad woonde een zekere Simon, die zich al langer met toverij bezighield en daarmee alle Samaritanen versteld deed staan. Hij deed erg gewichtig en zei dat hij een groot man was.10 ‘Deze man is wat men de Grote Kracht van God noemt,’ werd er gezegd.11 En omdat hij de mensen een hele tijd met allerlei toverkunsten had verbaasd, hielden zij zich aan wat hij zei, zowel groot als klein.12 Maar dat veranderde toen Filippus kwam. Hij vertelde hun over het Koninkrijk van God en over Jezus Christus. De mensen geloofden hem en lieten zich dopen, zowel mannen als vrouwen.

13 Zelfs Simon geloofde wat Filippus zei en liet zich dopen. Hij liep steeds achter Filippus aan en viel van de ene verbazing in de andere, door de wonderlijke dingen die hij voor zijn ogen zag gebeuren.
14 De apostelen in Jeruzalem hoorden dat de bevolking van Samaria in de Here Jezus was gaan geloven. Daarom stuurden zij Petrus en Johannes erheen om eens te kijken.15 Petrus en Johannes baden voor hen,16 omdat de nieuwe volgelingen wel in de naam van de Here Jezus gedoopt waren, maar de Heilige Geest nog niet hadden ontvangen.17 Na het gebed legden zij hun de handen op en de volgelingen ontvingen de Heilige Geest.18 Toen Simon de Tovenaar zag dat de volgelingen de Heilige Geest ontvingen, doordat Petrus en Johannes hun handen op hen legden, bood hij de twee apostelen geld en zei:19 ‘Geef ook mij die macht, dan kan iedereen de Heilige Geest ontvangen als ik mijn handen op hem leg.’20 ‘Uw geld zal u te gronde richten!’ antwoordde Petrus. ‘Wat God geeft, is niet te koop.21 U hebt hier part noch deel aan. U staat niet zuiver voor God. Vreselijk dat u met zo’n voorstel aankomt.22 Kom toch tot inkeer en smeek God of Hij u wil vergeven dat u zoiets hebt bedacht.23 Ik zie dat u vergiftigd bent door bitterheid en gevangen zit in uw eigen slechtheid.’

24 Simon antwoordde: ‘Wilt u de Here voor mij vragen mij niet de straf te geven die u zojuist noemde?’

25 Petrus en Johannes verzekerden de Samaritanen dat zij hen als broeders erkenden. Nadat zij hadden gezegd wat hun door God was opgedragen, vertrokken zij weer naar Jeruzalem. Onderweg maakten zij in vele Samaritaanse dorpen het goede nieuws van Jezus Christus bekend.
26 Filippus ging ook de stad uit, want een engel van God had tegen hem gezegd: ‘Zorg ervoor dat u vanmiddag op de weg van Jeruzalem naar Gaza bent, dat is een eenzame weg.’27 Toen Filippus op die weg liep, zag hij een wagen voor zich uit rijden. In die wagen zat een voorname Ethiopiër. Hij was minister van financiën in de regering van koningin Candace van Ethiopië. De man was in Jeruzalem geweest om God te aanbidden en28 keerde nu naar zijn land terug. Onderweg zat hij hardop te lezen uit het boek van de profeet Jesaja.29 De Heilige Geest zei tegen Filippus: ‘Haal die wagen in en blijf ernaast lopen.’30 Filippus zette de pas erin en toen hij bij de wagen kwam, hoorde hij iemand hardop lezen. Het was uit het boek Jesaja.31 ‘Begrijpt u wat u leest?’ vroeg hij aan de man in de wagen. ‘Eerlijk gezegd, begrijp ik er niet veel van,’ antwoordde de man. ‘En zeker niet als niemand mij uitleg geeft!’ En hij vroeg Filippus bij hem in de wagen te komen zitten.32 In het gedeelte dat de Ethiopiër aan het lezen was, zei de profeet Jesaja: ‘Hij was als een schaap dat voor de slacht weggebracht werd. Hij deed zijn mond niet open, zoals een lam stil is terwijl het geschoren wordt.33 Hij werd vernederd en zijn recht werd hem ontnomen. Wie zal over zijn nageslacht vertellen? Zijn leven is immers van de aarde weggenomen.’34 De Ethiopiër vroeg aan Filippus: ‘Heeft Jesaja het hier over zichzelf of over iemand anders?’

35 Filippus antwoordde dat Jesaja over de Christus sprak. Hij vertelde hem dat Jezus de Christus is, waarbij hij uitging van wat zij zojuist hadden gelezen.
36 Op een gegeven ogenblik reden zij langs een water. ‘Kijk,’ zei de Ethiopiër, ‘daar is water. Wat is erop tegen mij te dopen?’

37 Filippus antwoordde: ‘Als u met heel uw hart in Jezus gelooft, is er niets op tegen.’ Hij zei daarop: ‘Ik geloof dat Jezus Christus de Zoon van God is.’
38 Hij liet de wagen stilhouden en ging samen met Filippus het water in en Filippus doopte hem.39 Toen zij uit het water kwamen, nam de Geest van de Here Filippus weg. De Ethiopiër zag dat hij weg was. Hij reisde verder met een hart vol blijdschap.

40 Filippus bleek in Azotus te zijn. Vandaar ging hij naar het noorden en kwam ten slotte in Caesarea. Onderweg sprak hij in alle plaatsen over Jezus Christus.
