Daniel 9

1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans,2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years whereof the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years.3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.4 And I prayed unto Jehovah my God, and made confession, and said, Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keepeth covenant and lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments,5 we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from thy precepts and from thine ordinances;6 neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, that spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him;10 neither have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even turning aside, that they should not obey thy voice: therefore hath the curse been poured out upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God; for we have sinned against him.12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil; for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet have we not entreated the favor of Jehovah our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in thy truth.14 Therefore hath Jehovah watched over the evil, and brought it upon us; for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth, and we have not obeyed his voice.15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, let thine anger and thy wrath, I pray thee, be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are round about us.17 Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies’ sake.19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God, because thy city and thy people are called by thy name.20 And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God;21 yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.22 And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding.23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.24 Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.25 Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times.26 And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.27 And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.

Daniël pleit voor Jeruzalem

1 Het was het eerste regeringsjaar van koning Darius, de zoon van Ahasveros. Darius kwam uit Medië, maar werd toch koning van de Chaldeeën.
2 In dat eerste jaar van zijn regering las ik, Daniël, de woorden van de HERE aan de profeet Jeremia en leidde daaruit af dat Jeruzalem zeventig jaar een verwoeste stad zou blijven.3 Ik begon de Here God te smeken een eind te maken aan onze ballingschap. Terwijl ik bad, vastte ik. Ik droeg een ruige zak als kleding en bestrooide mijzelf met as.

4 Ik beleed de HERE mijn zonden en die van mijn volk.
‘Here,’ bad ik, ‘U bent een grote en ontzagwekkende God. U bent trouw in het nakomen van uw beloften. U bent genadig en goed voor de mensen die U liefhebben en uw geboden naleven.5 Wij hebben gezondigd en overtredingen begaan. Wij hebben ons goddeloos gedragen en zijn ongehoorzaam geweest. Wij hebben uw geboden naast ons neergelegd.6 Wij hebben niet willen luisteren naar uw profeten die in uw naam hebben gesproken tegen onze koningen, vorsten, voorvaderen en het hele volk.7 Here, U bent rechtvaardig, maar wij schamen ons over onze zonden. Ja, dit geldt vandaag de dag voor zowel de mannen uit Juda, als voor de inwoners van Jeruzalem en heel Israël. Het geldt voor iedereen, of we nu ver weg of dichtbij wonen, of naar welk land U ons ook hebt verdreven vanwege onze ontrouw aan U.8 HERE, wij en onze koningen, vorsten en vaders schamen ons diep over onze zonden tegen U.9 Maar de HERE, onze God, heeft medelijden en vergeeft ons hoewel wij Hem ongehoorzaam zijn geweest.10 Wij hebben niet naar de stem van de HERE, onze God, geluisterd. Wij hebben ons niet gehouden aan de wetten die U ons door uw profeten hebt gegeven.11 Ja, heel Israël heeft uw wet overtreden en zich van U afgekeerd door niet naar uw stem te luisteren. Vanwege onze zonden heeft God ons met een vreselijke en door een eed bekrachtigde vervloeking getroffen, zoals die was opgeschreven in de wet van zijn dienaar Mozes.12 God heeft ons nog zó gewaarschuwd, maar moest ten slotte wel zijn dreigementen uitvoeren. Nog nooit heeft zo’n ramp plaatsgehad als die ons en onze overheid in Jeruzalem heeft getroffen.13 Alle ellende en straf, waarover is geschreven in de wet van Mozes, is werkelijkheid voor ons geworden. Maar zelfs toen nog weigerden wij ons te bekeren en zo de HERE van gedachten te laten veranderen. Zijn waarheid vonden wij niet belangrijk.14 Daarom heeft de HERE ons welbewust gestraft. Want de HERE, onze God, is rechtvaardig in alles wat Hij doet, maar wij wilden niet naar Hem luisteren.15 Here, onze God, U hebt uw volk met veel machtsvertoon uit Egypte geleid en uw naam is daardoor wereldwijd bekend geworden. Wij hebben gezondigd en goddeloos geleefd.16 Here, laat toch ter wille van uw gerechtigheid uw toorn tegen uw eigen stad Jeruzalem, uw heilige berg, worden afgewend. Want vanwege onze zonden en die van onze voorouders drijven de heidenen rondom de spot met uw volk en met Jeruzalem.17 Onze God, luister naar het gebed van mij, uw dienaar! Luister naar mijn smeken! Laat uw gezicht genadig oplichten over uw verwoeste heiligdom, ter wille van Uzelf.18 God, luister toch naar ons, kijk naar onze miserabele toestand. Kijk eens hoe de stad waaraan uw naam verbonden is, in puin ligt. Wij smeken U dit niet omdat wij zelf zo goed zijn, maar op grond van uw grote barmhartigheid voor ons.

19 Here, luister toch! Here, vergeef ons toch! Doe iets, Here, stel uw hulp niet uit. Ik vraag het ter wille van Uzelf, mijn God. Want uw stad en uw volk zijn verbonden met uw naam.’
20 Terwijl ik nog bad en de zonden van mij en mijn volk Israël beleed en God smeekte een keer te brengen in het lot van Jeruzalem,21 kwam de man Gabriël, die ik in een vorig visioen had gezien, in allerijl naar mij toevliegen. Het was rond de tijd van het avondoffer.22 Hij begon mij dingen uit te leggen en zei: ‘Daniël, ik ben gekomen om u inzicht te geven in Gods plannen.23 Zodra u begon te bidden en te smeken, werd een bevel uitgevaardigd. Ik ben gekomen om u dat te vertellen, want God houdt heel veel van u. Luister goed en denk terug aan het visioen dat u zag!

24 God heeft een periode van zeven maal zeventig jaar vastgesteld en pas daarna zal er een einde komen aan de goddeloosheid en zullen de overtredingen vergeven zijn. Het koninkrijk van eeuwige rechtvaardigheid zal dan worden uitgeroepen en een zeer heilige plaats zal opnieuw worden ingewijd, zoals in visioenen en door profeten was aangekondigd.
25 Luister goed! Vanaf het moment waarop het bevel tot herbouw van Jeruzalem wordt gegeven, tot het moment waarop een gezalfde, een vorst, komt, zal een periode van zeven maal zeven jaar verstrijken! Jeruzalems straten en stadsmuren zullen gedurende een periode van tweeënzestig maal zeven jaar intact blijven ondanks de rumoerige tijden.26 Na deze totale periode zal een gezalfde onschuldig worden vermoord. Er zal een koning komen die de stad en de tempel zal verwoesten. Deze zal zijn einde vinden in een vloed van ellende, en oorlog en verwoestingen zullen vanaf dat moment tot het einde heersen, dat staat nu al vast.

27 Deze koning zal een verbond van zeven jaar sluiten, maar halverwege zal hij de mensen dwingen te stoppen met het brengen van slachtoffers en spijsoffers. En ten slotte zal de vijand in het heiligdom van God een ontzettende gruwel plaatsen. Maar God zal op zijn beurt deze verwoester treffen met zijn vonnis dat nu al vaststaat.’
