Deuteronomy 30

1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither Jehovah thy God hath driven thee,2 and shalt return unto Jehovah thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul;3 that then Jehovah thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples, whither Jehovah thy God hath scattered thee.4 If any of thine outcasts be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will Jehovah thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:5 and Jehovah thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.6 And Jehovah thy God will circumcise thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.7 And Jehovah thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, that persecuted thee.8 And thou shalt return and obey the voice of Jehovah, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.9 And Jehovah thy God will make thee plenteous in all the work of thy hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, for good: for Jehovah will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers;10 if thou shalt obey the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law; if thou turn unto Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too hard for thee, neither is it far off.12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;16 in that I command thee this day to love Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, that thou mayest live and multiply, and that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.17 But if thy heart turn away, and thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish; ye shall not prolong your days in the land, whither thou passest over the Jordan to go in to possess it.19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed;20 to love Jehovah thy God, to obey his voice, and to cleave unto him; for he is thy life, and the length of thy days; that thou mayest dwell in the land which Jehovah sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Een belofte van zegen

1 ‘Als al deze dingen over u komen, de zegeningen en vervloekingen die ik heb opgenoemd, zult u tot het juiste inzicht komen terwijl u onder de volken leeft waarheen de HERE u heeft verdreven.2 En als u in die tijd naar de HERE, uw God, wilt terugkeren en u en uw kinderen zijn begonnen met heel hun hart de wetten en regels die ik u vandaag geef, te gehoorzamen,3 dan zal de HERE, uw God, u uit uw gevangenschap redden. Hij zal u genade schenken, naar u toekomen en u bijeenbrengen uit alle volken waaronder Hij u heeft verspreid.4 Ook al zou u zich in de verste uithoeken van het heelal bevinden, Hij zal u vinden en terugbrengen naar het land van uw voorouders.

5 Hij zal ervoor zorgen dat het u goed gaat, nog meer dan uw voorouders, en u in aantal doen toenemen.
6 Hij zal de harten van u, uw kinderen en uw kleinkinderen reinigen, zodat u weer met hart en ziel van de HERE, uw God, kunt houden. Zo zal Israël weer tot leven komen!7-8 Als u terugkeert naar de HERE en alle wetten en regels die ik u vandaag geef, gehoorzaamt, zal de HERE uw God zijn vervloekingen van u afnemen en deze tegen uw vijanden richten, tegen hen die u haten en vervolgen.9 De HERE, uw God, zal u voorspoed geven bij alles wat u doet. Hij zal u veel kinderen, veel vee en grote oogsten geven, want de HERE zal opnieuw vreugde over u hebben, net als over uw voorouders.

10 Hij zal blij met u zijn als u zijn geboden die in dit wetboek zijn geschreven, gehoorzaamt en u met hart en ziel wendt tot de HERE, uw God.
11 Want deze geboden zijn niet te moeilijk om nageleefd te worden.12 Deze wetten zijn niet hoog in de hemel zodat u ze niet kunt zien of horen en er niemand is die ze bij u kan brengen.13 Ze zijn ook niet aan de overkant van de zee, zo ver weg dat niemand u hun boodschap kan overbrengen.

14 Nee, zij zijn vlakbij – in uw hart en op uw lippen – zodat u ze kunt gehoorzamen.
15 Luister, vandaag heb ik u de keus gegeven tussen leven en dood, geluk en ellende.16 Ik heb u vandaag opdracht gegeven de HERE, uw God, lief te hebben, zijn paden te volgen en zijn wetten na te leven. Dan zult u leven en een groot volk worden. De HERE, uw God, zal u en het land dat u in bezit gaat nemen, dan zegenen.17 Maar als uw hart zich afwendt en u niet wilt luisteren – als u zich laat verleiden andere goden te aanbidden –18 dan verklaar ik u hier vandaag dat u zeker zult worden vernietigd, u zult geen lang en goed leven hebben in het land aan de overkant van de Jordaan.19 Hemel en aarde zijn mijn getuigen dat ik u vandaag de keus heb gegeven tussen leven en dood, zegen en vloek. Kies dan toch het leven, zodat u en uw kinderen mogen leven!

20 Kies voor het liefhebben en gehoorzamen van de HERE, uw God. Houd u aan Hem vast, want dat is uw leven. Dat verzekert u van een lang leven in het land dat de HERE beloofde aan uw voorouders Abraham, Isaak en Jakob.’
