Ephesians 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints that are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love:5 having foreordained us unto adoption as sons through Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved:7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,8 which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,9 making known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him10 unto a dispensation of the fulness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things upon the earth; in him, I say,11 in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will;12 to the end that we should be unto the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ:13 in whom ye also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,-- in whom, having also believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,14 which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, unto the praise of his glory.15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which ye show toward all the saints,16 cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;18 having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,19 and what the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might20 which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,21 far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:22 and he put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church,23 which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Gods geweldige rijkdom voor zijn kinderen

1 Van: Paulus, die door God is aangewezen als apostel van Jezus Christus. Aan: alle gelovigen in de stad Efeze, die Christus Jezus trouw volgen.

2 Ik wens u de genade en de vrede toe van God, onze Vader, en van onze Here Jezus Christus.
3 Aan God, de Vader van onze Here Jezus Christus, komt alle dank en eer toe. Hij heeft ons, nu wij één zijn met Jezus Christus, alle geestelijke zegen gegeven die er in de hemel is.4 Al voordat Hij de wereld maakte, heeft God ons uitgekozen, wij die één met Christus zijn. Wij zouden alleen van Hém zijn en volmaakt voor Hem staan.5 Het is altijd zijn bedoeling geweest ons als zijn kinderen aan te nemen door Jezus Christus,6 opdat wij Hem zouden prijzen voor zijn onovertroffen genade. En Hij heeft ons door zijn geliefde Zoon laten ervaren hoe buitengewoon goed Hij is.7 Gods Zoon heeft zijn leven en zijn bloed gegeven om ons van de zonde te verlossen. Alles wat wij hebben misdaan, is ons daardoor vergeven. Wat een rijke genade!8 En dat niet alleen! God heeft ons alle wijsheid en inzicht gegeven.9 Hij verlangde ernaar ons het geheim bekend te maken waarom Hij Christus heeft gestuurd.10 Hij heeft besloten alles in de hemel en op aarde bijeen te brengen onder het absolute gezag van Christus, als de tijd rijp is.11 Door onze eenheid met Christus zijn wij het eigendom van God geworden. Dat is altijd de bedoeling geweest van Hem die alles doet zoals Hij Zelf wil en goed vindt.12 Hij wilde dat wij, Joden, die al zo lang gewacht en gehoopt hebben dat de Christus zou komen, Hem zouden prijzen en eren.13 En niet alleen wij, maar ook u, die de waarheid hebt gehoord, het goede nieuws dat uw redding is. Toen u in Christus ging geloven, gaf God u de Heilige Geest, die Hij had beloofd als een bewijs dat u van Christus bent.

14 Deze Geest in ons is een borg voor wat God ons allemaal zal geven als Hij ons, zijn eigen volk, zal verlossen. Een reden temeer om Hem te eren voor zijn grootheid.
15 Daarom houd ik ook niet op God voor u te danken, want ik heb gehoord hoe groot uw geloof in de Here Jezus en uw liefde voor alle christenen is.16 Ik dank God zonder ophouden voor u en in mijn gebed17 vraag ik de God van onze Here Jezus Christus – de Vader die alle eer verdient – u wijsheid te geven, opdat u helder en duidelijk zult zien wie Christus is en Hem door en door zult kennen.18 Ik bid dat u innerlijk vol licht zult zijn, zodat u zult zien tot welke heerlijke toekomst u geroepen bent. Dan zult u weten wat een geweldige rijkdom God voor al zijn kinderen heeft klaarliggen.19 Ik bid dat u zult beseffen hoe ontzaglijk groot de kracht is die werkzaam is in ons die in Hem geloven.20 Door diezelfde grote kracht is Christus uit de dood teruggekomen om de belangrijkste plaats naast God in te nemen.21 Nu is Hij hoog verheven boven elk gezag, elke macht, kracht en regering, boven alles waarvoor men respect heeft, niet alleen in deze wereld, maar ook in de wereld die komt.22 God heeft letterlijk alles aan Christus onderworpen en Hem als hoofd aangesteld over alles, voor de Gemeente.

23 De Gemeente is zijn lichaam, waarin Hij volledig tot uiting komt, Jezus Christus die alles in de hele schepping vervult en volmaakt.
