Ephesians 6

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.2 Honor thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise),3 that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord.5 Servants, be obedient unto them that according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;6 not in the way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;7 with good will doing service, as unto the Lord, and not unto men:8 knowing that whatsoever good thing each one doeth, the same shall he receive again from the Lord, whether he be bond or free.9 And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, and forbear threatening: knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no respect of persons with him.10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.13 Wherefore take up the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;16 withal taking up the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:18 with all prayer and supplication praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,19 And on my behalf, that utterance may be given unto me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.21 But that ye also may know my affairs, how I do, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:22 whom I have sent unto you for this very purpose, that ye may know our state, and that he may comfort your hearts.23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible.

De wapens die God geeft

1 Kinderen, gehoorzaam je ouders. Dat is goed omdat de Here hun gezag over jullie heeft gegeven.2 ‘Heb eerbied voor uw vader en moeder.’ Dat is het eerste gebod waaraan een belofte is verbonden:

3 ‘Als je je vader en moeder eert, zal het je goed gaan en zul je een lang leven hebben.’

4 Ouders, behandel uw kinderen zo dat zij niet dwars en haatdragend worden. Voed ze zo op dat ze de Here leren volgen en liefhebben.
5 Slaven, gehoorzaam uw aardse meesters met eerbied en ontzag. Dien hen met heel uw hart, zoals u Christus dient.6 Werk niet alleen goed als uw meester toekijkt, maar ook als hij u alleen laat.7 Doe uw werk als een dienaar van Christus, die van ganser harte wil doen wat God vraagt.

8 U weet toch dat de Here u zal belonen voor alle goede dingen die u gedaan hebt, of u nu slaaf bent of vrij man.

9 Slaveneigenaars, u moet op uw beurt uw slaven goed behandelen. Spreek hen niet dreigend toe. U moet niet vergeten dat u zelf slaven van Christus bent. U hebt dezelfde Meester als zij en voor Hem bent u elkaars gelijken.
10 Ten slotte nog dit: word sterk door één met de Here te zijn en zijn grote kracht in u te laten werken.11 Bewapen u met alle wapens die God ons geeft. Dan zal de duivel met zijn slinkse streken u geen kwaad kunnen doen.12 Want wij vechten niet tegen mensen, maar tegen onzichtbare wezens: de duivelse heersers en machten die deze donkere wereld tiranniseren, boosaardige geesten in de onzichtbare wereld om ons heen.13 Bewapen u dus met al Gods wapens om u te kunnen verdedigen als de vijand aanvalt. Dan zult u, na grote dingen te hebben gedaan, ongeslagen uit de strijd tevoorschijn komen.14 Maak u klaar! Doe de gordel van de waarheid om en gesp het borstpantser van de rechtvaardigheid aan.15 Trek de schoenen aan van de bereidheid om het goede nieuws van de vrede met God bekend te maken.16 In elk gevecht zult u het geloof nodig hebben, als een schild waarmee u alle brandende pijlen van de duivel kunt doven.

17 U zult niet zonder de helm van de redding kunnen of zonder het zwaard van de Geest, het woord van God.
18 Bid voortdurend en laat u daarbij leiden door de Heilige Geest. Verslap daarin niet, maar houd vol en bid onafgebroken voor de andere christenen.19 Bid ook voor mij, vraag God mij de juiste woorden te geven als ik mijn mond opendoe, zodat ik vrijmoedig het geheimenis van het goede nieuws bekend mag maken.

20 Als gezant van de Here zit ik hier vast in de gevangenis. Bid daarom dat ik onbevreesd zal zeggen wat ik zeggen moet.
21 Tychikus, een dierbare broeder en een trouwe hulp in het werk van de Here, zal u precies vertellen hoe het met mij gaat.

22 Daarom stuur ik hem naar u toe, om u te laten weten hoe het met ons is, om u daarmee te bemoedigen.
23 Broeders en zusters, ik vraag God de Vader en de Here Jezus Christus u de vrede en de liefde te geven die het geloof met zich meebrengt.

24 Allen die een blijvende liefde voor onze Here Jezus Christus hebben, wens ik de genade van God toe.
